Dezeen Music Project: Voyager (remix) by Aimedeuxhaine

We’ve got another remix to end the week on Dezeen Music Project, this time courtesy of young French producer Aimedeuxhaine who has turned his precocious talents to the Daft Punk cassic Voyager.

The track is part on an EP by new electronic record label Atelier du Sample, which you can download for free here.

Make sure you also check out the great dance track by Aimedeuxhaine that we featured on Dezeen Music Project last year.

Paper Chase: Help Jiwon Choi Find a Manufacturer for Her Tyvek Vase

JiwonChoi-TyvekVase-1.jpg

Recent RISD grad Jiwon Choi reached out to us about her recent travails in finding a manufacturer for her Tyvek Vase. “Since it is a relatively new material, no one is willing to experiment with it. Some manufacturers said they are reluctant to use Tyvek because they don’t know what it is. Tyvek is reusable and in many cases, it has more positive side than plastic. I’m hearbroken.”

The remarkably simple object consists of a sheet of Tyvek, a versatile waterproof paper developed by DuPont, coiled into a conical vessel, an elegant repurposing of the industrial material.

Designed just in time for Valentine’s day, the objective was to create a simple and light (yet strong enough to stand) package for flowers. Flowers will go back to the soil, Tyvek will have have a second life too; repurposed for products like corrugated pipes and landscape material.

We wish Choi the best of luck in finding a manufacturer—surely our readers can provide some leads?

Fred Shirts: The encouraging water brand introduces T-shirts made of 100% recycled plastic bottles

Fred Shirts

A water brand unlike any other, Fred has stood on store shelves for some six years now, setting itself apart with an unconventional flask-like shape and a rather counterintuitive message—reuse. "We’re bringing cutting-edge research into the public sphere" – Loop.pH

Mathias Gmachl of Loop.pH explains how the London design studio’s large-scale lighting installations help people relate to cutting-edge research in molecular biology in our next Designed in Hackney Day movie.

The studio aims to make science more accessible to people by creating environments in which they can experience the processes and structures first-hand, on an understandable scale. “We are trying to create artworks in the city that bring cutting-edge research in biology and in energy into the public sphere, into a park in the centre of the city, so people can actually relate to this research and get an understanding of what is about to happen to them.”

Since 2003, Gmachl and Rachel Wingfield’s Hackney-based studio loop.pH has combined science and design for projects ranging from community enhancement schemes in Hackney to installations at London’s Kensington Palace (above and below).

“The relationship with science is at the heart of what we do because we are very hungry researchers,” says Gmachl.

“We’ve developed illuminated, self-supporting animated architectural textiles using an old textile technique, lace making, that’s brought up to an architectural scale then combined with parametric design software to create some very ephemeral light installations,” he says.

Their research into metabolisms and energy flows began with a collaboration with British Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Walker, which led to large-scale interpretations of his molecular research and metabolic machines. “We took one of our textile techniques, based on taking a material and charging it up with energy, to create a molecular structure on a human scale,” he explains.

Collaboration is also important to Loop.pH’s work and Gmachl describes how creating artworks with residents on an east London estate to transform a notorious drug spot into a useable space was about “planting seeds” in the community. “It’s not about telling people what to do, it’s about trying to help find the opportunities and develop the skills so they can be practised,” he says.

“For a designer this is actually a difficult process, because designing is the thing that we consider ourselves to be best at and it’s the thing that we really want to do so to give up that level of control, to allow other people to design and to make the choices, is something that we have to learn to overcome.”

Based in Stoke Newington, the Loop.pH studio is just around the corner from Dezeen’s offices. Dezeen’s Designed in Hackney initiative was launched to highlight the best architecture and design made in the borough, which was one of the five host boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as being home to Dezeen’s offices.

Light Beams

This structural lighting design applies basic cantilever physics with simple lines and geometries to form a perfectly minimal desktop lamp. Its two steel arms are reminiscent of iconic steel construction beams, giving it subtle industrial style that’s balanced by a spectrum of vibrant color options. Do want!

If You Can Guess What This Repurposed Wood Item was Used to Manufacture, You’ll Win a….

cigar-molds-01.jpg

You could be forgiven for assuming this jewelry display rack was purpose-built. But look a little closer: It’s obviously an antique, and if you look at the channels cut into it, you can see that they antedate the invention of the router. Someone went to a lot of trouble to chisel those out, by hand, with a consistency that practically screams “manufacturing.” But what could this thing possibly have been used to make?

Scanning Eraser

Seems like déjà vu but the concept of marrying an eraser with a scanner is a very good one. The ES-X not only erases the whiteboard but also transmits the scanned content to a laptop. It can also post selected portion to Facebook (and hopefully other social mediums), but the point is to make it easy for students to take notes. I am all for devices that make school life easier, what do you say?
