Product News: industrial designer Konstantin Grcic has created a bench system based on the iconic Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe.

The B Bench features the distinctive crossing legs of the 1929 original but is reinterpreted as a flexible, modular system.

“I think it’s interesting to make these references in design. Design is not about inventing new things all the time – design is an evolution of things,” says Konstantin Grcic. “So this famous chair designed by Mies van der Rohe: we pick it up now so many years later and make it in a completely different way in terms of technology but also turning it into a more systematic product.”

His bench can be any length from a one-seater chair up to a six-metre bench, with or without armrests. It can be upholstered or left as bare aluminium and is suitable for use indoors or outdoors. “We have created a kit of parts which can be changed into very different typologies,” adds Grcic.

BD Barcelona Design was the first design brand in Spain and recently celebrated its 40th birthday by commissioning designer Jaime Hayon to hand-paint 40 unique vases. It has also worked with contemporary designers including Doshi Levien and NHDRO. See all our stories about products from BD Barcelona Design.

A Transforming Chair for Auto Mechanics

human-hoist.jpg

Here’s a rather interesting piece of highly specific transforming furniture: The Human Hoist, which is designed to go from rolling chair to floor-level mechanic’s creeper. Your average consumer will have no use for it, but for a grease monkey with no hydraulic lift, it provides a quick way to get from under the car to the toolchest and back again. Check it out (and lower your speakers if you’re at work, annoying soundtrack ahead):

There’s no word on what the thing would cost, as it’s currently just a prototype. Whoever’s behind the product has announced they’re “actively looking for potential investment and/or [a] manufacturer to produce The Human Hoist,” but their website has absolutely no useful information.

Pull & Change

Designed by Stockholm-based design studio Whatswhat, the Pull lamp’s personality is both organic and distinctively true to its Scandinavian design heritage. The partly exposed, partly hidden cord is a connection between all elements while also serving as the mechanism to adjust the position of the shade. The user can simultaneously transform the angle of the light and character of the lamp by a simple adjustment of the cord.

Aesthetically Unique and Pleasing

Typically this not the phrase you will use to describe an extension cord, but nevertheless, designer by Youngkwang Cho feels that he has the hang of it. I agree with him that extension cords and spike-busters are best left hidden behind sofas and desks, but if you have something as aesthetically unique and pleasing as the Curious Extension Plug, then maybe you’d like to show it off.

As you can observe from images below, when the extension plug is not plugged-in, it forms a very resting shape, which gives an user that the product is not being used. Once the extension plug is plugged and in operation, it slowly begins to change its shape into more nervous-tension look which gives an impression that it is hot and be careful when you need to touch it.
