Time Flies by Lisa Frode

Time Files by Lisa Frode

Industrial design graduate Lisa Frode has created a desk with a fabric cover, inspired by the way aeroplane cabins can be divided with curtains to create different rooms during the flight.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

Called Time Files, the desk has a wooden frame underneath the fabric, which can be opened fully, partially closed for privacy and concentration or zipped right up to hide the workspace when not in use.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

The series also includes a clothes hanger that works in the same way.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

Frode designed the project while studying at Lund University in Sweden.

Here are some more details from Frode:

Inspired by wooden and fabric constructions found in old airplanes I have created a small collection of furniture including a desk and a clothes hanger.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

The pieces give the user an option of leaving the content exposed or hiding it away, or creating a closed space within a room. There is a story behind everything, that is what makes life interesting. In my final thesis project (MFA in industrial design) the aim was to use such stories as an inspiration in order to create several pieces of furniture.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

In order to learn more about construction and processes involved I was determined to make the prototypes on my own. The materials used were european ash, cotton fabric and brass.

Time Files by Lisa Frode

Inspired by my grandfather’s stories about his time as an airplane mechanic I developed a concept where a wooden frame and a fabric cover create a lightweight and semi translucent enclosure. The final result is a clothes hanger where one can store the items you have worn but not yet want to put in the laundry. Hide the clothes away, protecting them from dust and eyes of visitors or leave the drapes open to display your favorite items.

Some people see airplanes, other a stage or a window. My hope is that I have created objects that will communicate something to the observer, whatever that might be. If you see anything more than just another desk, I have succeeded.

A Pen & Patience: Massive Olympic Bicycle Race Illustration by Ugo Gattoni

0ugogattoni.jpg

I have the utmost respect for anyone who still hand-draws illustrations with a pencil and Rapidograph. French illustrator Ugo Gattoni, inspired by the 2012 London Olympics, spent freaking 723 hours putting together an intricate 16-foot-wide drawing of a bicycle race through a surreal London (see the video after the jump):

Here’s your chance to share your project not only with your fellow makers, but more importantly, the greater New York City community.

We are so excited to be a media partner in this year’s World Maker Faire, September 29-30th, hosted at the New York Hall of Science in Queens! You can enter your project as a Maker, Music Performer or Presenter in this year’s event. The organizers encourage exhibitions to be interactive, highlighting the process of making things.

Portland Mini Maker Faire 2012 – Submit Your Application this Week!

Portland-MMF-468.jpg

Being part of Portland’s emerging maker culture has been an exciting and integral part of the development of Core77’s Hand-Eye Supply store, which is why we couldn’t be more thrilled about Portland’s Mini Maker Faire coming to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

Mark your calendar because the inaugural Portland Mini Maker Faire runs September 15-16. Maker Faire is the greatest show (and tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning.

Maker Faire is a weekend filled with an incredible variety of exhibits, talks, demonstrations, and performances bridging arts, crafts, science and engineering—many of them hands-on and all of them engaging. Maker Faire is a reflection of our community at its very best. Check out some of our favorite projects from this year’s Bay Area Maker Faire.

OMSI has put out the call for makers in the Pacific Northwest and are currently accepting applications, and they’re looking for anyone who is embracing the do-it-yourself (or do-it-together) spirit and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience.

If you (or someone you know) would like to participate in the Portland Mini Maker Faire you can submit an application on the OMSI website. Entries can be submitted from individuals as well as from groups, such as hobbyist clubs and schools. We particularly encourage exhibits that are interactive and that highlight the process of making things.

Applications are due no later than 11:59 pm on August 5, 2012, so get on it makers!

Triplicity

Its name might not make sense until you take a closer look at Lamp3′s wood legs, metal shades, and LED panels. If you’re still not catching on, it’s time to get your peepers checked! The concept is almost too simple, but it’s quite nice to look at.

Origami to the Rescue!

Inspired by the recent quakes and tsunamis in Japan and Haiti, the Origami Shelter aims to provide fast, efficient protection for those in dire situations. The design takes from the folding principles of origami and transforms from small rectangle to a secure, durable sanctuary in minutes. The compact design can easily be shipped in large quantities and constructed by a single individual, making it a great disaster relief product.
