The free-standing structure is made of flat stainless-steel bars that intersect and overlap at right angles, coated in textured rubber to give the books some grip.

The Unique Toy Design Staff of Child’s Own Studio

0childsownstd01.jpg

Vancouver-based Wendy Tsao started Child’s Own Studio, a home-based toy design studio with a twist: Tsao doesn’t design the toys. Children do. Tsao’s brilliant insight was to create one-off toys for a child modeled exactly on a drawing done by that child.

[Children’s drawings are] a wonderful expression of childhood [and] the starting point of the collaborative project. Details and color choices are reproduced as closely as possible so that the stuffed toy that arrives in the mail is immediately recognizable to the child who designed it. It’s a fun, rewarding process, and kids love seeing their drawings come alive.

While you can see how it’s do-able enough to create a toy from a drawing by an artistically-gifted child, like these…

…you’ve gotta be impressed when Tsao pulls off the more abstract drawings, like these:

0childsownstd03.jpg

Seeing those latter three makes me reflect, with shame, on times in the past when I received a less-than-clear sketch from the head designer on the job and privately complained about being asked to realize it in CAD. It looks as if Tsao could probably pull off plush Picassos. And with a few hundred creations under her belt and counting, she won’t be running out of business anytime soon.

Bellroy Shrinks the Travel Wallet

0btravelwalt02.jpg

“How come travel wallets have always looked like man-bags that don’t even fit in your pocket?” asks Australia-based Bellroy, the company dedicated to designing better ways to carry things. “These over-sized ‘purses’ force you to keep your passport and tickets in a bag, far from the most secure place when traveling.”

Their solution is the purpose-designed Travel Wallet, sized to hold everything flat you’d need to get through the hell of JFK or the bliss of Incheon.

0btravelwalt01.jpg

Your passport gets the separate compartment it deserves, there’s space to hold four credit cards, and the extra-long lengthwise slot means you can stick your boarding pass in there without creasing the barcode, not to mention hold currency from those countries with the weird doormat-sized bills. There’s even an included micro-pen that tucks into the spine, so you can fill out that form where you lie about the fact that you’re smuggling infected livestock and genetically-enhanced seedlings while carrying more than US $10,000 in cash.

0btravelwalt03.jpg

The Travel Wallet’s done up in vegetable-tanned leather, in both a dark “midnight” color and a lighter cocoa, the latter of which will more quickly gather that Indiana-Jones-like patina.

Monday’s quick start: Young designers at Fiera Rho

Fiera_eikels

A little while ago I told you how my friend Lisette Scheers, who lives here in Kuala Lumpur had visited the Milan Furniture fair and she made some fantatsic images of the things she liked. You might remember this post about Paola Lenti's new collection or Ventura Lambrate…  today just a summary of all the designs she saw  at Fiera Rho, in lIsette her words: "This year not so inspiring – a lot of the same – and everyone uses the same colours : fluo, light blue, ocre yellow and light green" … not sure of you agree ? I hear what she is saying but I do like these warm and cozy little stools… called the Bambi chairs by Takeshi Sawada.

Surtex: Day 1

Work by Tracy Walker, represented by i2i Art Inc. Tracy is also one of the artists in Work/Life 2: the UPPERCASE directory of illustration.

Shelley Brown reports from NYC:

After 25 fantastic years repping illustrators for everything from advertising to design and publishing, the economic crash in 2008 was a real catalyst for the already shifting business of ‘traditional’ illustration. There has been a growing trend towards illustrators producing art suitable for applications to surfaces on everything from greeting cards to household products. To this end, Surtex is a trade show offering artists an opportunity to introduce their work to a variety of manufacturers and retailers.

I attended the show back in 2006, but over half a decade later, I am noticing that the calibre of art is changing, as more and more illustrators are entering this market. Just imagine how exciting it is for an illusrator whose work is normally applied to a printed brochure or used in a campaign that has a shelf life of 4 weeks to suddenly see their work applied to a tea towel, a rug or a stationery package!

DAY 1

Today I attended three seminars:  Basics of Art Licensing, Parts I + II, and Understanding Legal Basics: Contracts and Copyrights.

If you are an illustrator or designer thinking of pursuing surface design, I would recommend that you visit Surtex, which takes place in New York city every May. The conference program includes sessions where industry pros help give you a foundation in licensing your art.

I’m happy to report that although about one third of the surface design industry may still sell the art outright for a modest flat fee (where the artist relinquishes their copyright), there is a growing appreciation for the value of the usage and the aritst’s rights.

More to come after day two tomorrow!

Surtex coverage!

When Alanna Cavanagh offered to be the UPPERCASE correspondent at Surtex of course we said yes! And even better, Alanna’s rep from i2i Art Inc, Shelley Brown, will be sharing her experiences as well. The two have travelled to NYC from Toronto and will be sending in their daily recaps. Surtex is THE place to go to buy and sell licensing of art and design and I know that many of you aspire to be represented there some day.

To set the mood, here are some of Alanna’s pattern designs:
