Daily Obsesh – Floral Engraved ID Case

imageWhen it’s sunny out, we always like to be a bit more carefree with our accessories.

Try lightening your load and instead of lugging a big purse around, toss all the extras aside and just have the basics for a night … maybe (dare we say it??) even leave the cell phone behind!

Okay, that may be taking it a bit far, but you can definitely make things a tad bit sleeker with this Floral Engraved ID Case from Forever 21. It’s part of their “Fabulous Finds” so it’s only $4.50 but looks so much more expensive than that!

With this vintage look, you’ll fool everyone into thinking you spent all weekend rummaging through garage sale piles for this sweet trinket. It’s got two straps inside to hold your money, credit cards, and ID in place, and really, maybe that’s all you need to carry with you this weekend!

Price – $4.50

BBC R&D and magneticNorth’s Maestro installation

Digital design agency magneticNorth has collaborated with BBC R&D to create Maestro, an interactive installation that gives children the chance to conduct the BBC Philharmonic orchestra…

Maestro is part of the Music Boxes exhibition at MediaCityUK which is, in turn, part of the Manchester International Festival. Using Microsoft Kinect technology – which is similar to PlayStation’s motion-sensing EyeToy technology – Maestro enables a player standing in front of a screen showing a fish eye lens view of the London Philharmonic orchestra to use their hands to control the tempo and dynamic of the orchestra, just like a conductor – as a number of kids demonstrate in this film:

BBC Philharmonic Maestro from mN on Vimeo.

The concept and initial prototype for Maestro was first created by the BBC’s Research & Development team who partnered with magneticNorth to develop the user experience, design and technical solution. “This has been a fun project to work on,” says Adam Todd, creative director of magneticNorth, “and has allowed us to continue our experiments into how we can interact with digital content. The Kinect allowed us to create something that children found natural to use, and as the complex technology at the core of Maestro is hidden away it makes the experience even more magical.”

The Music Boxes exhibition for kids aged between six months and seven years is open for another two days at MediaCityUK in Salford Quays. More info at mif.co.uk/event/music-boxes

Flotspotting: A Strong Showing in Local Motors’ Terra Prix 2085 Competition

Two months ago, we posted about Local Motors’ Terra Prix 2085 design competition, a hypothetical ’round-the-world race set in the near future (read the full brief here). While it’s no surprise that there’s some overlap between the Coroflot community and that of Local Motors, we’re pleased to present a selection of Flotspotted entries, including winner Victor Acuña’s “Global Spirit Racing.”

New Audi ads focus on the details

Back in May, BBH London released an epic two-minute ad for Audi exploring the Le Mans driving experience. Now the agency returns with a series of much shorter spots for the car brand – five ten-second animated ads that aim to express how much good stuff is squeezed into the small Audi A1…

The ads are a continuation of a campaign titled A Big Idea Condensed, that began last autumn with a series of print ads (shown on CR here). Three of the five ads are shown here, and each concentrates on one aspect of the car, such as its Bose speakers or its Xenon headlights. They were directed by John Robertson at Passion, written by Richard Mcgrann, Kevin Stark, Andy Clough, Adrian Rossi, Nick Kidney and Alex Grieve and produced by  Matt Towell and Ruben Mercadel.

These photographs by Julien Lanoo show a French driving-test centre by Samuel Delmas Architectes, which is camouflaged to look like a fence.

Weathered rods of Corten steel surround the exterior of the Centre d’Examen du Permis, interrupted by black-framed box windows.

This screen provides solar shading for the glazed, prefabricated building while fences in the same material extend to either side.

Framed porches project from two sides of the centre to provide separate entrances for staff and the public.

The architects raised the building off the ground since the site in Gennevilliers, a suburb to the north-west of Paris, is prone to flooding.

    Ioclimatic approach

To build in an easily flooded zone, a friendly and a warm edifice in an HEQ way of thinking while assuring the safety of the site and the longevity of the project.

    Site, brief and project

The project takes place along the boulevard. It is used as an acces filter for the tracks thanks to its openwork envelope.

Centre d'Examen du Permis by Samuel Delmas Architectes

The fence on the boulevard uses the facade system and improves its presence on the way while developping a kinetic effect when you are driving all along the building.

The building skin is constituted of vertical elements, made of strips of timber or metalic slats, regularly spaced according to their function.

Centre d'Examen du Permis by Samuel Delmas Architectes

The envelope was made in order to solve all the constraints depending of the brief and of the site: solar protection, intimity, modularity of the building, prefabrication, anti-intervention, anti-vandal, environmental approach…

    Building & sustainable development

Simple and rigorous volumes allow the optimisation of the way of building, the rationalization of the structure, of the envelope and of the networks.

    Media Design School

Study with some of the world’s best creatives at New Zealand’s award-winning design school

    Advertorial content:

    mds-7.jpg

Given that technological advancements in digital art are progressing by leaps and
bounds, it’s almost impossible to produce an excellent portfolio by just playing
around on your laptop after work. If you’ve decided to bite the bullet and get back
in the classroom, New Zealand’s Media Design School is becoming one of the best places to get a visual arts qualification (undergraduate or graduate-level) in a range of specialists, ranging from interactive advertising, 3D animation and graphic design.

    Media Design School_LargeTailAdvertorial_Image1.jpg

Located in stunning (and outrageously livable Auckland), Media Design School started with a class of
30 in 1998. Over the past decade and a half, it’s become one of the best places in the world to study creative technologies. Young Guns named Media Design School the fourth most creative
school in the world over the past decade, a hefty accolade coming from the organization
devoted to spotting young talent. Graduates have gone on to work with George Lucas’
Industrial Light Magic and Microsoft Game Studio, among many others. And New Zealand VFX and post-production powerhouse Weta Digital (owned by Peter Jackson) do their part too–they are the largest employer of Media Design School graduates in New Zealand.

    mds-2.jpg mds-3.jpg

But the best testimonial on behalf of the school is the work of the students themselves.
Led by James Cunningham, a 3-D filmmaker whose most recent work premiered at the 2009
Telluride Film Festival, Media Design School students produced “Das Tub.” Cunningham directed
the short film, and acclaimed New Zealand screenwriter Nick Ward wrote the screenplay.
The film recently won Best Short Short at the Aspen Shortsfest, one of the world’s top film festivals, and now qualifies for Oscar consideration—a considerable achievement for a film animated by students, who now have industry connections far and beyond what any of them might have imagined when they started their program.

    mds-11.jpeg

Students in the 3-D department can also showcase their talents with Media Design School’ Real or Render Challenge. Even
seasoned connoisseurs of 3-D will have a difficult time pinpointing the differences
between real photographs and student-produced 3-D renderings of household objects.
Even an intricately detailed map offers no obvious clues.

    mds-1.jpg

All classes take place in Media Design School’s beautiful Auckland campus.
They’re currently accepting applications online, for both domestic New Zealand
and international students. For more information on the courses and how to apply,
check the Media Design School website.

    Core77 Design Awards Video Gallery

    c77_videos.jpg

Check out our selection of 42 Design Awards Videos chosen from over 250 submissions!!

Let’s face facts. Designers need to make movies.

It is impossible to compress the breadth and depth of a design into a single 500-word press release or a miniscule catalog blurb. (I’ve pored over the text and pictures on Herman Miller’s website and I still don’t really get the SAYL Chair. Does the back remind anyone else of Jelly Shoes from the 80s?).

Since the proliferation of the webcam, designers have no excuse. We live in an age where slightly insufficient blurbs can easily be paired with video clips that demonstrate the brilliance of designs. I’m not saying that designers no longer need to learn how to communicate verbally; just that video is an under-utilized way of efficiently conveying what something does and how it does it.

Which is why the Core77 Design Awards encouraged entrants to submit a short video testimonial along with the static images and text solicited by other award programs. And we weren’t disappointed; designers sent in over 250 videos! Independent of the judging, we put together a gallery of a few of our favorites ranging from the cinematic exploration of parallel lives to a full minute shot of two guys jumping on a chair.

Overwhelmingly, the videos provided insight not only into the designs they showed but also into the lives of the people who made them. Whether the creator was a fictional bike thief, a diabetic fashionista, a recovering cigarette addict, an origami-obsessed student, or a frustrated mom, it was exciting to see how personal experiences enriched and informed their work.

People often say that “designers are storytellers” but not all stories are verbal and the visual/kinesthetic thinkers attracted to design professions are sometimes ill equipped to transcribe their concepts and innovations into the written word. Not everyone can afford his or her own marketing department but most can pick up their Apple-product-of-choice and press “record.”

You can check out the Core77 Design Awards video gallery here!

And join us again in the next week as our Jury Captains continue to broadcast their results from around the world!
