A slice of the action from D&AD

New to this year’s D&AD Awards will be two physical awards for both In Book and Nominated work: slices of a coveted Yellow Pencil…

The new trophies have been designed by Turner Duckworth and will sit alongside the Yellow, Black and recently unveiled White Pencils. “The slices of pencil are relative in relation to the size and material of the Yellow Pencil award,” explains TD’s Bruce Duckworth. “They are also exactly the same shape and proportion of the D&AD hexagonal logo. Of course they are made of wood, to be quirky like the Pencil itself.”

D&AD President Simon Sankarayya added “For many years we have endeavoured to communicate more effectively the value of winning at any level in the D&AD Awards and the slices will undoubtably help to build awareness of the great level of creativity that it takes to be recognised by our juries.”

Following the recent confusion over work that was “shortlisted” for D&AD (work that survived the first round of judging but was not awarded – see our blog post and D&AD’s response, here), the new physical awards certainly go some way to further celebrate the achievement of having work in the D&AD Annual and nominated for one of the top Pencils.

The new slices will be launched at the forthcoming D&AD Awards evening, which takes place on June 16 at London’s HAC, Artillery Gardens.

Celeb Poll – Cutest On-Screen Couple at Cannes

imageThe 46th Annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France is under way and A-List stars and Indie darlings alike turned out to promote their movies.


Co-stars Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz walked the red carpet for the fourth installment of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ with Depp looking dapper in a white tux jacket and slick black slacks and Cruz floating in a frothy lavender hued gown.


Meanwhile, Brad Pitt and co-star Jessica Chastain promoted ‘The Tree of Live’ with Pitt in a crisp white summer suit and slicked hair and his lovely leading lady, Chastain, in a simple retro-inspired red dress and nude pumps.


Also spotted were new-comers Elisabeth Olsen (yup, younger sister to the Olsen twins!) in a vintage looking white lace and embroidered gown, smiling next to her movie mate, Sean Dirkin, who kept it casually appropriate in a loose white button-down and black slacks.

Milan 2011: visitors to an installation by London designer Paul Cocksedge at the Milan showroom of lighting brand Flos could view an animation of a BMW 6 Series car only by putting their heads inside a plastic lamp shade.

Called Sestosenso, the installation featured conical lamp shades suspended in a white-walled room.

Through the shades visitors can view a movie of the new BMW 6 Series projected on the wall that is invisible to others in the room.

BMW and FLOS present: SESTOSENSO, a luminary apparition by Paul Cocksedge:

Munich/Milan. Sharing a passion for design, research, experimentation, aesthetic purity and technological innovation, BMW and FLOS have joined forces at Salone del Mobile 2011 to create, thanks to Paul Cocksedge’s talent, SESTOSENSO, a celebration of light. The installation can be visited in the FLOS Professional Space in Corso Monforte 15 from 12th to 17th April.

Inspired by the quality and beauty of light and the astonishing new BMW 6 Series, the first BMW with Full-LED headlights, Paul Cocksedge has erected a seamless, curving, white wall extension to the Flos showroom and low-hanging red and white conical lamps. As with the BMW headlights, the source of light remains hidden, only the light itself is guided through a transparent body, rendering the light source invisible and forever changing its qualities. The resultant, intensely soft light caresses, seduces all around.

Stepping inside one of the impressive SESTOSENSO red lights, a video of the BMW 6 Series Coupe reveals itself on the vast white wall. As if accessing a sixth sense, there is a hint of movement in the corner of the eye. Through the light we see the car: through the car, we understand the light.

The playful sculptural pieces softly illuminate, stimulate and allow contemplation. Cocksedge gives us elegant, ‘functional brilliance’. A hand made Limited Edition of 66 SESTOSENSO light sculptures, designed by Paul Cocksedge Studio for Flos, is released for this special event, to celebrate the perfect fusion of light, design and technology.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupe presents itself as a sport car for connoisseurs who enjoy luxury and appreciate trailblazing technology. The adaptive Full-LED headlamps of the new BMW 6 Series Coupe are an innovation in the field of lighting technology. This innovative technique generates bright white light to assure an especially intensive and uniform illumination of the roadway.

This technique, which is being serially deployed for the first time in the BMW 6 Series Coupe, facilitates an impressive restaging of BMW design icons such as the round headlamps and the taillights.

Lomography adds an ultra-wide angle camera to their classic compact line

An exciting addition to their line of legendary analog cameras, today Lomography releases the Lomo LC-Wide. The continuation of the iconic LC-A+ line retains its classic aesthetic but adds greater functionality—specifically the ability to shoot ultra-wide angle photos.

Relatively compact in size, the camera sports a 17mm lens with three different shoot modes (full, square and half format) that allow photographers to snap extreme close-ups and extra-wide panoramic shots. Love Japan – a design auction at Clerkenwell Design Week

Dezeen is one of many London design businesses supporting Love Japan – a design auction taking place at Clerkenwell Design Week next week to raise money for Shigeru Ban Architects’ evacuation centre project, which is helping people made homeless by the recent earthquake in Japan.

We’ve donated a Neko watch from Dezeen Watch Store (above), designed by Japanese architects SANAA, as a prize.

Other prizes include a Nendo side table by Cappellini, a coffee and tea maker by Naoto Fukasawa for plusminuszero, and dinner for two at Yo! Sushi.

Prizes will be on show at TOTO, 140-142 St John Street, from 24-26 May; the auction takes place from 6-9pm on Thursday 26 May.

LOVE JAPAN aims to both raise awareness of Japanese design talent while supporting the community in Japan at a time of critical economic crisis.

Japanese design and craftsmanship has long appealed for its purity and play- fulness – in essence, taking the everyday to an art form. Sensing the current mood for going back to the fundamentals of design, to create a new simplicity – international design companies are increasingly commissioning Japanese designers to create furnishings and homewares for their collections.

A selection of generously donated Japanese design pieces by international manufacturers will be showcased at TOTO during Clerkenwell Design Week: 24-26 May 2011, and auctioned on Thursday 26 May, commencing 6:30pm.

All proceeds are in aid of Shigeru Ban Architects’ evacuation centre project.

Shigeru Ban Architects’ Evacuation Centres Partitions Project
The Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is renowned for creating shelters for victims of natural and manmade disasters. Following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake which struck the Pacific coast of Japan on March 11 2011, Ban is deploying simple partitions for evacuees taking shelter in gymnasiums in Japan’s Tohoku region. It is imperative to help these people avoid the distress from lack of privacy and high occupancy. Modular paper tube partitions are fitted together with white canvas sheets attached to the frame to conceal each of the 161-sq ft units, typically allotted per family. Ban and his students are delivering the $300-each units to survivors via truck. Given the huge scale of the crisis, work continues, so future donations remain crucial. www.shigerubanarchitects.com

Universal Everything’s Deutsche Bank videowall

Commissioned by Deutsche Bank, Universal Everything has created a huge 12 metre long  video wall installation for the foyer of the bank’s shiny new Hong Kong headquarters…

The bank of screens is hooked up to a bespoke system of eight networked computers outputting realtime generative videoart that greets visitors to the building with a constantly changing, unique experience each day. Here’s a video of the freshly installed videowall in action:

“Working closely with creative coders Field, we produced eight video artworks which run continuously, reinventing themselves forever,” explains Universal Everything’s Matt Pyke of the project. “We also worked alongside EightFive2 on the architectural specification, creative development and hardware implementation and the project has taken 10 months to complete,” he adds.
