New HBO True Blood Campaign

BBDO New York has created a new online campaign to promote the release of the True Blood series 3 DVD. Designed to test the knowledge of the show’s greatest fans, the site allows users to zoom into an online film to search out and answer clues related to the series.

The film below appears on the website. In the online version, viewers are able to pause the action and, using a nifty scroll bar at the bottom of the screen, search for clues by clicking within the film.

When a clue is found, a question box will open up. If answered correctly, the user gains a point. Sixty clues are hidden on the site in total, with players able to attain badges for collecting certain amounts of points, which can then be shared with friends via Facebook. The clues relate to pretty obscure moments in the series, meaning that fans are likely to need to buy the DVD set and watch again to find all the answers (see what they’ve done there?).

If all the clues are discovered and answered correctly, players can then enter a draw to win ‘Ultimate True Fan Experience’, an epic prize the details of which are yet to be revealed. Visit the site at hbo.com/digdeeper.

Italian-Singaporean studio Lanzavecchia + Wai created these paper lamps in collaboration with a Singaporean craftsman who makes masks for a traditional lion dance.

Called Leone Series 01, the lamps are made from strips of bamboo covered in paper and painted orange inside.

LEONE Series 01 – Handcrafted Lighting Objects
in collaboration with Singapore’s last Lion Dance mask craftsman
Launched at Salone Satellite 2011

During the Milan Design Week 2011,  Lanzavecchia + Wai, a creative studio of Francesca Lanzavecchia and Hunn Wai presented LEONE – Series 01, a family of handcrafted lighting objects at the SaloneSatellite.

“LEONE”

Lanzavecchia + Wai collaborates with Singapore’s last remaining Lion Dance mask craftsman, resulting in Leone Lights which are a series of lamps that bring the artistry of this rare South-East Asian trade into the domestic space.

Hand-made from lithe strips of bamboo, covered by rice paper and then painted internally with a fiery orange inspired by traditional livery, these objects put the Lion dance mask craft literally in a new light to re-enter the public consciousness in a new context and expression.

Bio – Master Henry Ng

Master Henry Ng, having many years of Lion dance performance experience under his belt, dedicated his passion for the art form into the craft of making Lion masks.

Picking up this skill through sheer passion and inquisitiveness, he took this activity seriously and became a full-time craftsman (switching from the job of a precision metal machinist) in the mid-Nineties to cater to the many martial arts associations here.

There were about twenty lion mask craftsmen in Singapore then but competition came in the form of cheaply mass produced lions from China in the late-nineties.

As a result of thinning profit margins, every single craftsmen left the trade and so he became Singapore’s last Lion Dance mask maker, a torch-bearer of a piece of culture passed on from South Chinese immigrants who came to Singapore in the early 20th century.

Curator of Antiquities Karol Wight Leaves Getty for The Corning Museum of Glass

It’s proving difficult to keep a curator of antiquities at the Getty for more than a few years it seems. The post was previously held by Marion True until 2007 when she ran afoul with the governments of both Italy and Greece for allegedly purchasing stolen pieces (you’ll recall that her legal issues finally ended late last year, after which she was finally able to tell her side of the story). Her replacement, long-time Getty employee Karol Wight, has now announced her departure, though for decidedly less international-prosecution reasons. Wight will take over as director of The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, which describes itself as “the world’s foremost museum dedicated to the art, history, and science of glass.” It’s a remarkably good fit, given that Wight is not only an expert of antiquities, but on works of glass in particular. She will take over at Corning come mid-August and meanwhile, the Getty will likely be scrambling to find a replacement for not just Wight’s important position there, but also a director as well, following Michael Brand‘s departure last year. Add the arrival of new president and chief executive, James Cuno, and it’s shaping up to be an interesting year for the Getty.

Asbury has this to say about the thinking behind the project: “It’s not often you get the chance to tweet to 380,000 people – about four Wembley Stadiums. So I thought I should take the chance to get a conversation going. We’re all good at sharing our best work, but there’s probably as much to be learnt from the worst. The real stinkers that we wince to recall. A project where everything that could go wrong did. An early piece of student work that you thought was genius at the time. Or a project you knew you should have turned down, but guiltily did for the money.”

Lady Gaga has established herself as not only a pop giant, but as a fashion icon as well. But like many internationally renowned artists, it isn’t an individual endeavor.
