MY WAY

We would like to invite you to the my way talks at the Design Academy Eindhoven Hub on the 13th of April in Milan.

We will start at 16.30 at Studio Zeta, Milan, and round up at 19.00 with drinks & bites, plus a private view.

We see new ways coming into being: designers searching for new roles in between disciplines, or working as a collective combining difference knowledge, qualities and perspectives. There is new purpose.

Showcasing selected recent graduates who represent the new role models for design. Meet the designer as storyteller > Bas Princen interviewed by Jurgen Bey, the designer as translator > Christien Meindertsma interviewed by Joost Grootens, the designer as innovator > Dries Verbruggen, Claire Warnier interviewed by Piet Hein Eek, and a new generation of social designers.

The talks will be moderated by Marcus Fairs (Dezeen architecture and design magazine). And to round up Paola Antonelli (curator Museum of Modern Art New York) will give a reflection.

Entitled This Way, this year Design Academy Eindhoven show will occupy a large space in Porta Romana filled with graduate work, and also large cafe hangout. There will be additional side programme of talks and debates throughout this week. We hope to meet you at MY WAY

Debbie Glassberg’s Super Shipping Container House

0homecontained.jpg

Industrial designer Debbie Glassberg has got, hands down, the most stylish shipping container house we’ve seen yet. Erected in Kansas City, Missouri, the five-container house was designed by Glassberg and an unnamed partner. It encompasses 2,600 square feet kept toasty by geothermal heating and is decked out with design touches throughout, as seen in this extensive slideshow, which also features construction shots.

Here’s a video on the house shot by a local news crew:

Glassberg considers the house a prototype and is aiming to create future versions for $125 per square foot.

For those with a particular interest in shipping container construction, check out Dekalb Market’s “Not Just a Container” competition: it’s down to the wire for submissions, which is just two days away, but an expert panel will select the five top finalists by April 19th, at which point the public will have the chance to vote on the winner through the end of the month.

Work/Life 2: with SPD at NYC

The primary goal of the Work/Life series is to promote the illustration talents profiled to potential clients. To that end, the book has been mailed out to a long list of designers, publishers and advertisers. Much of the list was compiled by participants listing their top ten dream clients; we researched their submissions and found contacts and addresses whenever possible. The book was also sent to major design firms and magazine / book art directors.

This Friday, Work/Life 2 will be available FREE to members of the Society of Publication Designers attending their Spring Fling in New York City. I hope that the book will make a positive impression and garner new contacts and commissions for the 100 amazing people featured in the book.

The book is designed and written to be entertaining, informative and inspiring—unique qualities when it comes to the usual illustration annual or compilation which are usually just images and contact info with not much heart and soul. Readers—whether art directors or aspiring illustrators or people interested in the creative spirit—will get to know our Work/Life illustrators on a more personal level.

A Touch of Code

Se vi sbarellano le installazioni interattive, sarà presto in vendita per la Gestalten, il libro A Touch of Code.

From as close to home as here in Calgary, across the nation and to our American neighbours south of the border and farther afield to Australia, Scandinavia, Israel, Western Europe and the UK, Work/Life 2 has a lovely and diverse mix. Local artists will be in attendance and available to sign your books.

(Oh, and there’ll be Crave cupcakes, too.)

Other First Thursday fun you’ll enjoy:

Also in Art Central a few doors down from me, our friends from Burnt Toast Studio have a new exhibition up. You can also bring in a tshirt or hoodie and they will silkscreen designs on it or you can learn how to customize your own design.

The folks at Studio C in the lower level have an exhibition of sculpture made from found objects. Studio Todorovic has a show of prints from Vancouver Island artists as well as great art supplies and Nation is having a sale. Read more about First Thursday here.
