Quick video tour of CCA’s new materials library

I want to go to there. California College of the Arts’ Jake Sollins, archivist and ID grad, takes us on a tour through their New Materials Resource Center. The library of sorts is loaded up with 1,800 samples that you lucky CCA students can get your grubby mitts on four days a week; the rest of us have to settle for the browsable web interface located here that does not appear to be up and running yet.

The Jog Ride

Mutant_bike_01

Can't decide if you want to go for a jog or a take a bike for a spin? No problem – you can do both at once – at least according to Todd Kundla, who makes wacky mutant bikes like the above Shoe Bike. I'm guessing this is a good workout machine – it must take a lot more muscle to pedal this beast than any standard-issue bike. Photography by Jay Janner.

The barbarian shrine that is the Plantronics ergonomic testing wall

Reading consumer product reviews of headphones on Amazon or Apple’s site is depressing, and rather like reading the Reader Comments section of a Daily News article: People seem to have no concept or tolerance of those who are different from themselves. You see things like “One star. These earbuds fit terrible” right beneath “Previous poster is an idiot, these headphones fit GREAT!”

It’s the 50th anniversary of electronics manufacturer Plantronics, and Slashgear’s taken a look inside their industrial design labs. Ever wonder how Plantronics gets around the everyone’s-got-different-shaped-ears thing? The answer is simple and kinda gross: They have a wall of simulated human ears, presumably cast from actual ears.

0wallofears.jpg

This wall contains rubber molds of ears of every size, shape and form they could possibly throw together in order to cover as wide a range of ear shapes possible. Plantronics tests all new headset designs rigorously in order to put on the market the most comfortable headset for all shape and sized ears. Ears are notoriously difficult to create a mass market product for due to the level of inconsistency in human ear shapes. This wall is the “database” Plantronics has created in order to hit as many variables in headset design possible.

Tune in next week while we dig up a photo of Bausch & Lomb’s wall of eyeballs.

No Right Brain Left Behind

NRB.png

Education has been a huge focus for the creative community this year with films like David Guggenheim’s Waiting for Superman and programs like Redu calling attention to the crisis in US schools today. In conjunction with the global events coordinated for Social Media Week 2011 a group of creative agency-types have thrown down the gauntlet, challenging their peers to concept ideas to address the “creativity crisis” within the US education system over the course of the week. No Right Brain Left Behind is using this interesting media moment and giving teams of designers, agencies and consultancies an opportunity to enact some change within a local community. The brief will be announced on February 7th, the first day of social media week and teams have 5 days to pitch their ideas. Tune into their site to register your team or learn more about their well-laid plans.

No Right Brain Left Behind is a speed innovation challenge, calling on the creative industries to concept ideas that can help the creativity crisis happening in U.S. schools today.

In collaboration with Social Media Week 2011, teams from creative industries will have 5 days to concept ideas. On the last day of the week, ideas will be submitted virtually to the RightBrainsAre.us site, and an expert panel will pick 3 winning ideas that are to be featured by our media partners. The best ideas are to be piloted in 2011 and 2012.

Upside Down by Floris Wubben

Upside Down by Floris Wubben

This chair by Dutch designer Floris Wubben was made by binding and splinting the branches of a willow tree, forcing them to grow into four legs.

A seat and backrest were then cut into the trunk and the whole thing inverted.

The chair was designed in collaboration with artist Bauke Fokkema.

Upside Down by Floris Wubben

Here’s a tiny bit of text from Wubben:

Upside down

This chair is made of a (inverted) willow tree. The legs have been obtained by twisting and splinting its branches and letting it dry into the final shape.
The seat and back were naturally kept in line with the bole’s silhouette. This project had been put in practice jointly with the artist Bauke Fokkema.

Unusual vehicle concepts from Gambo Design

Some interesting concepts on the vehicle front from Nuremberg-based Gambo Design:

0gambodescon1.jpg

The Thansadet is a towable camper-trailer, with a killer app that sets it apart from its competitors: It floats. Tow it to the water’s edge, launch it in some unspecified fashion and now you’ve got an aquatic caravan.

0gambodescon2.jpg

The Beach Boy is a joystick-driven, roofless electric car designed to cruise the coastline, like something you’d find at a Caribbean retreat. The seats pop down when it’s time to park, providing a sundeck that looks like it will fit two, despite the fact that there’s four seats. Presumably two can tan while the other two are ordered out to fan them with palm fronds.

On the eve of its 37th anniversary, Luminaire is pleased to welcome internationally celebrated architect / designer Patricia Urquiola to its Coral Gables flagship showroom on Thursday, February 3. As one of the most recognized visionaries in the arena of contemporary design, Urquiola has broken through the ceiling of the mainly male-dominated industry and made it her own. Attributing her success to the influence of prominent mentors such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti and Piero Lissoni, Urquiola’s brilliant work is internationally recognized for its distinctive progressive qualities. Combining fearless experimentation with a unique approach to pattern and form, her products reflect an unabashed passion for design. From sustainable product design for the bath to cutting edge furniture, her innovative voice has made her a force to be reckoned with in the 21st century. Patricia Urquiola has also been a pinnacle of Luminaire’s “Love” fundraising series where she, along with several other renowned designers, donated their time to create one-of-a-kind designs which have helped Luminaire raise close to one million dollars for cancer research.

For over 36 years, Luminaire has been a pioneering force in the design world, a result of the uniquely personal and long-lasting relationships the company has cultivated with the most innovative designers and manufacturers. B&B Italia, who represents many of Urquiola’s creations, has been a close friend and collaborator of Luminaire for nearly 25 years. Their ability to capture the essence of contemporary culture, to sense and anticipate trends, and to respond to changes in taste and living needs, has resulted in a collection of world-famous furnishings, which account for a crucial chapter in the history of Italian design. These factors, and a passion for staying at the forefront of design and innovation, have also contributed to the profound partnership that B&B Italia has shared with Luminaire since 1986.

Join us at Luminaire’s Coral Gables Showroom for what will surely be a riveting lecture followed by a reception with Urquiola and her work, including the introduction of the Bend sofa, which has received critical acclaim for its ingenious technical features.

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY

Patricia Urquiola grew up in Oviedo, Spain and studied architecture in Madrid before transferring to the Politecnico di Milano. There she studied under mentor Achille Castiglioni, who would have an immense impact on the course of her career. Working in the product development office of De Padova with Vico Magistretti from 1990-1996, Urquiola also maintained an associate practice between 1993-1996 with architects Marzia De Renzio and Emanuela Ramerino, with whom she was engaged in the architectural design of showrooms, restaurants and franchising. Joining Piero Lissoni in 1996, she remained as head of his design group until 2001, when she left to open her own studio specializing in design, exhibitions, art direction and architecture.

Urquiola’s most recent high-profile commercial endeavors include striking interiors for Barcelona’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island as well as a new H&M store in London. Extending her reach ever further, in 2010, she collaborated with designer Giulio Ridolfo on an installa- tion called ‘the dwelling lab,’ in which she explored the interior and exterior of the new BMW 5 series Gran Turismo.

B&B ITALIA

Ever since its foundation in 1966, B&B Italia has been a leader in the contemporary furnishing sector. The com- pany has won international acclaim as a representative of Italian furniture design, both for homes (B&B Italia home division) and public areas (B&B Italia contract division). The group’s headquarters are located north of Milan, in a prestigious building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers.

B&B Italia’s furnishings collection stems from the group’s capacity to represent contemporary culture and respond quickly to the new needs that emerge from today’s evolving lifestyles. It is this alchemy resulting from a mix of creativity, innovation and production that creates modern, yet timeless, pieces of furniture.

To this end, B&B Italia collaborates with international designers, leaving its own distinctive mark on each product: every design is unique, an exemplification of the values of research, creativity and function. The importance of research, which has always been a fundamental aspect of the group’s development, is evident in the in-house research and development centre. The centre’s highly innovative nature has earned it several acknowledgements, including 4 “golden compasses” one of which, the most important one in 1989, for “constant work towards integration with the aim of combining the values of scientific and technological research with those of a functional and expressive product”. Standing out for innovation, quality, service, design and prestige; B&B Italia has become member of Fondazione Altagamma, which brings together Italian companies of international renown that operate at the higher end of the market and that exude Italian culture and style in their company and product management activities.
