EXCLUSIVE: Karl Lagerfeld Developing Lower-Priced Line for Macy’s

Just in time for a certain famous Thanksgiving Day Parade comes news that is sure to elicit gratitude among fashion fans: designer Karl Lagerfeld will soon unveil a fashion venture with Macy’s, multiple sources told UnBeige. We hear that the national retailer has inked a deal with the Karl Lagerfeld brand, owned by private equity firm Apax Partners, for an affordably priced ready-to-wear line that will range from jeans to gowns. The new line, slated to launch with a collection for fall 2011, is also expected to include a major online component, with e-commerce as a key distribution channel.

Speculation about the venture has been rampant since early September, when Lagerfeld announced that he would not be showing his signature collection during Paris Fashion Week and instead had a fast fashion line in the works. At the time, Apax said that they were talking with several potential partners for the new “masstige” play. “I wanted this for a long time,” Lagerfeld told WWD in September. “I prefer to work in another way. I can’t compete with Chanel. I don’t want to be the poor child of myself. This has been my vision for years.”

Our calls to Apax and Macy’s were not immediately returned, but according to our sources, production of the new accessibly priced Lagerfeld collection will be handled by Li & Fung, the Hong Kong-based sourcing giant that has been on a deal spree in recent months. The global supplier, which has worked extensively with Macy’s, recently inked agreements to produce lines for stylist Rachel Zoe, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and celebrity couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (for Kohl’s).

A matchup of Lagerfeld with Macy’s and Li & Fung recalls other deals masterminded by Apax, which acquired Karl Lagerfeld SAS as part of its 2006 buyout of Tommy Hilfiger. The private equity firm paid $1.6 billion to take Hilfiger private and in 2007 sold the company’s global sourcing operations to Li & Fung for $247.8 million in cash. That same year, Apax-owned Hilfiger signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Macy’s for men’s and women’s sportswear. Apax has since cashed out of Hilfiger—selling the business to Phillips-Van Heusen for $3 billion in May of this year—but retained control of the Lagerfeld brand.

The SHG – 3 Haute Coats For The Holidays

imageThe Holiday season is officially upon us! This means lots of festive gatherings, cheer and good food! And festive gatherings means festive ensembles. But with this season full of love also comes a season full of freezing days and extreme elements. A warm winter coat is the best way to look stylish, stay warm and add a winter touch to any ensemble. A holiday coat should be a style that is classic and versatile, while being flattering and just a touch dressy. We have our three favorite styles of winter coats that’ll keep you toasty and tasteful all season long!

Pea Coat – This classic number is a winter coat staple. The thick material keeps you toasty, while the structured look is flattering and versatile. Pea coats can come in varying lengths, but opt for one that is more traditional for a look that’s in year after year. The A-line structure makes layering easy and it’s unisex appeal makes it equally cute with heeled boots or mens-inspired oxfords! Try a pop color for something a little more unique!

Cape – This style of outerwear is at once traditional and unique. Reminiscent of Christmas carolers, the cape is a look that is very winter appropriate, very cute and extremely comfortable (just remember to find a style with arm holes!) Due to it’s voluminous shape, layering is easy, but remember to keep the bottom sleek to avoid looking larger than you are. Try opaque tights and ankle boots!

Long Cinched Coat – The length is flattering and flirty because when paired with knee socks or tights, a long coat resembles a dress and flaunts long legs. The cinched waist creates an hourglass shape and makes for a more dressy style. A long cinched coat can be as casual or fancy as you please. Look for one that’s made of canvas or nylon for an everyday coat, or find one with fun embellishments like a fur trimmed collar or covered buttons for a special occasions coat!

Review: Five Books

Over drinks the other night, my friend looked over both of her shoulders, giggled nervously, and then very quietly confessed to me that she doesn’t read fiction. I patted my friend on the shoulder, told her it would be okay, and then shared with her one of my favorite new sites for discovering non-fiction works.

Five Books is the site, and its premise is:

Every day an eminent writer, thinker, commentator, politician, academic chooses five books on their specialist subject. From Einstein to Keynes, Iraq to the Andes, Communism to Empire.

If you’re interested in learning all about Norwegian crime writing or the Euro or Confucius or gender politics or bats, experts on these topics provide lists of the quintessential books you should read to learn a good amount on the topic. It’s convenient to have a reading list built for you by someone who is intimately familiar with the topic. Whenever I’m interested in learning something new, I pull up the site’s archives, find a topic, and start reading. I’m currently working my way through Paul Barrett’s list of dinosaur books because of my son’s infatuation with these creatures.

I haven’t been asked by Five Books to create a list of organizing or uncluttering titles, but I have thought about it a little. Obviously, I’d put my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week on the list. Also on the list would have to be David Allen’s Getting Things Done. Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook and Randy Frost and Gail Steketee’s Stuff would likely make the list, too. I’m torn about what my fifth book would be, though. Would I choose a corporate management book like The Toyota Way or a classic home-organizing book like Peter Walsh’s It’s All Too Much or would I go on more of a philosophical bent with a book like The Plain Reader?

Thankfully, I don’t have to make a decision about what books I would put on my list, but I’m glad the experts on Five Books are able to narrow down theirs. The site is an incredibly convenient way to become knowledgeable on a subject without cluttering up your time.

DESIGN APPROACH
Undergrowth design breathes life into everyday objects to create an other- worldliness that tickles the imagination coupled with a mysterious or nostalgic feel. We love high attention to detail since we feel this part of the process enables a strong mood or feeling to be built by using the subtle details in the work. I also like to play with subconscious elements that create a strong sense of symbolism with memory evoking functions. We aim to make products that become an integral part of the customers identity and style and that is able to continually to enthral the user. We strive to make objects that become household conversation pieces.

Get The Winning Look From Our ‘Accessorized’ Poll!

imageIt’s no secret that accessories can make or break an outfit. The right accessories take an outfit from cute to sensational. Celebs are masters at pairing the right jewelry and add-ons to ensembles and know just how to embellish their look to convey their personal style.

Angie Harmon looked like a sweet dream in a frothy lace skirt and fitted top. Paired with matching heels and a knotted belt, she kept her look simple and elegant. Even more popular was Ashlee Simpson, with her new short pixie cut ready to show of head-turning statement drop earrings.

But the loud and clear favorite with 50% of the votes was songtress and trend-setter, Rihanna. Berkeley Museum of Art Now Has to Figure Out How to Pay for New Building

0624bampfa.jpg

Speaking of museums, financial issues, and building plans, as we have been all morning, perhaps the most uplifting story of the year that concerned all three involved the Berkeley Museum of Art and the Pacific Film Archives. After finding themselves too cash-strapped to afford a brand new building designed by hot shot architect Toyo Ito, the organization managed to remain undeterred, pressed forward, found themselves an already-built building, and hired Diller Scofido + Renfro to rehab it for them. Unfortunately, as positive as that story has played out thus far, the San Francisco Chronicle has dug into the finances behind the project and found that both UC Berkeley and the museum/archives themselves aren’t quite sure who is going to be giving them a chunk money needed to complete the project, which is somewhat troubling given that it was fundraising woes that killed off the original Toyo Ito building. Though both groups are confident they’ll find a way to get what they need, the whole situation seems very similar to what’s happening at Michigan State University, where they’re still trying to raise the last $6 million needed to finish off a museum designed by their own hot shot architect, Zaha Hadid.
