Polyprop designer Robin Day passes away, leaves behind huge-selling legacy
Posted in: UncategorizedHumble, simple, lasting, ubiquitous, flying out of the factories, and a monster seller: That’s the Polyprop stacking chair designed by Robin Day, who passed away earlier this month. Inspired by the Eameses, in 1963 UK-based Day designed one of the first chairs to really take advantage of injection molding for mass markets–a single mold could crank out 4000 Polyprop seats a week, and since its inception over 14 million have been sold in 23 countries. (When licensed copies are tallied, the sales figures are estimated at between 20 and 50 million.)
Cooper-Hewitt Director Bill Moggridge wrote, about first regarding the chair, “I was immediately fascinated by the simplicity of the form combined with the deep understanding of the behavior of the material;” London Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic called it “one of those exceptional objects that can genuinely carry the burden of being labeled a humble masterpiece;” and Design Technology has termed it “one of the most democratic modern designs of the 20th century.”
Now, ten years into the 21st century, the chair is still being produced; manufacturer Hille cranks out some 500,000 per year. Quite an impressive feat for an almost fifty-year-old design.

Trtl Bot Cases
Posted in: ecofriendly Trtl Bot’s new cases bring flexible storage and handy stands to the iPhone 4
With every new iPhone comes a flood of new accessories designed to unleash the mobile device’s full potential. The new iPhone 4 cases from Trtl Bot stand out among the crowd for their forward-thinking ability to expand the phone’s functionality without adding superfluous plastic or obtrusive packaging. The two iPhone 4 models are the new Trtl Stand 4 and the Minimalist 4, a continuation of their previous line for the 3G/S. Both cases fit the phone snugly, keeping the sleekness of the phone’s design more or less intact.
The Trtl Stand 4 performs exactly how it sounds, letting you prop your iPhone up in three different ways. The different modes (Portrait, Landscape and Tripod) let you use your iPhone hands-free whether you are using Facetime, watching a movie or want to snap a steady photo.
The super slim Minimalist 4 is designed for those who hate having a bulky back pocket or carry a small bag. The hard plastic case provides not only sufficient protection from falls, but the slit on the back provides enough space to stick in an I.D., credit card and metro card.
Made stateside from recycled bottles, both eco-friendly cases sell online from Trtl Bot for $35.
Visually interesting fabric flowing over bodies video
Posted in: UncategorizedThere’s something alluring about the somewhat bizarre “Patch Up Pull Over” video by Niek Pulles, who goes by the moniker Heyniek. The film-maker, stylist, designer, artist and photographer made the film as a Design Academy Eindhoven graduation project and intended it to be both “an inspirational film and material catalogue for the fashion industry,” though an industrial designer should find the flowing materials interesting as well:
PATCH UP PULL OVER from HEYNIEK on Vimeo.
Tight second skin
Shielding clothes
Flowing dynamic surprise
Swiftly created
Rainbow outbursts
Accidental forms“Patch up Pull over” is all about shielding and decoration, rapidly combined. Flexible, water repellent, reflective materials. Fragmented coatings, texture and relief. Material experiments suggestive for usage on the body….
Yoox.com Partners with Design Magazine Case da Abitare on ‘Xmas Craft’ Offering
Posted in: Uncategorized
Chris Kabel’s “Money Vase,” made from bronzed coins, and Oskar Zieta’s steel “Plopp” stool are two of the items that will be featured in Yoox’s “Xmas Craft” collection.
The glad retail tidings continue, this time with news of a design collaboration that has more immediate gifting potential. Global fashion and design e-commerce powerhouse yoox.com (which we have to thank for many a discounted Rick Owens topper and for feeding our Fornasetti addiction) has teamed with Italian design magazine Case da Abitare on “Xmas Craft,” a curated collection of design objects that will be offered exclusively on yoox.com later this month. Think of it as a highbrow, design-savvy version of Oprah’s Favorite Things.
The holiday partnership, which the Bologna, Italy-based Yoox Group is slated to announce tomorrow, will celebrate innovative approaches to traditional materials with a focus on what happens when industrial processes get a handcrafted twist. Look for linens designed by Valérie Barkowski for Bandit Queen alongside BTC’s handspun brass pendant lights and Oskar Zieta‘s award-winning powdercoated steel “Plopp” stool (pictured above) for Danish manufacturer HAY. And for your holiday table, there is porcelain a-plenty, including cups and saucers by Marco Bertolini for DMK and elegant platinum-coated bowls by Tsé Tsé Associées. Case da Abitare editors selected each item to “tempt and delight the discerning Christmas shopper,” according to Yoox. Design fans in 67 countries will have through New Year’s Eve to splurge.

Pecha Kucha Night in NYC: November 30th
Posted in: UncategorizedNext Tuesday night, Pecha Kucha comes to New York with an intriguing theme: Sound. Here’s the pitch:
“The Sound Dimension”
In the early Oughts, the ubiquitous access to three-dimensional visualization technologies liberated designers form the limitations and legacy of two-dimensional representation. Architects feverishly took to these advancements applying them towards spatial applications, and with these tools, critiquing data and reinterpreting form and surface quickly became old-hat exercises in the initial, more free-wheeling schematic design process. These technologies nurtured a significant advancement in building a more multi-layered, responsive, and dynamic approach to visualization.
Not content to stop at 3 dimensions designers are exploring how to integrate in their creative vocabulary and toolset new elements for representation. What elements of inspiration are now begin explored, adopted, integrated? Specifically how is visualization inspired by other dimensions and senses such as sound and in particular music? In what ways can the immateriality of sound influence and translate into the world of physical design?
Pecha Kucha #10 will serve as an exploration of how sound, a seemingly visual abstraction (or distraction), can serve as the foundation to informing, visualizing, or connecting to architectural and graphic space.

Plato’s Collection by Amila Hrustić
Posted in: amila hrusticProduct design graduate Amila Hrustić of Bosnia and Herzegovina has created a collection of dresses embellished with clustered geometric shapes.
The Plato Collection is inspired by the five different Platonic solids – tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron, which are recreated in paper and attached to fabric in different configurations.
Hrustić’s has just graduated in product design at the Academy for Fine Arts in Sarajevo and the collection was her diploma project.

Here’s some more information from Hrustić:
Plato’s Collection
“Geometry existed before the creation” – Plato
The title of this diploma project is “Plato’s Collection” and the main inspiration for the entire Collection is located in Platonic solids. The collection is consists of five unique dresses handcrafted from a combination of textiles and paper.
Plato, the great Greek philosopher, studied what we now call “Platonic solids”. No one knows who first described the shapes of these bodies, perhaps early Pythagoreans, but some, including Euclid, say that it was a close friend of Plato’s Theaetetus.
There are only five Platonic solids: tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. This diploma project examines the concept of geometrically arranged and structured space in relation to the human body.
It is the most appropriate to call it a study of perception and contrast, and study of relationship between artificial and organic, amorphous and geometric. Each of the five Platonic solids is a basic building element for making dresses.
Simplicity of form and use of black and white print patterns on rigid paper emphasize the sculptural collection, its attitude toward the body and overall expression in space. Therefore, Plato’s collection does not fit into the category of everyday fashion and can be considered as a stage costume, and is intended for high-aesthetic stage performances, fashion editorials and other special purposes.
