Clare Park: Breaking Form

Doppelganger: “He could roar at the powers that be, who gave him Viagra, free parking and a bus pass. Or he could yawn at his doppelganger, who would not know the difference… ” Buz Williams

Breaking Form: Buz and Parkinson’s is the result of a 15-year collaboration between photographer Clare Park, Parkinson’s sufferer Buz Williams and his wife Debbie Green

The extraordinary series of images are currently on show in Glasgow at the World Parkinson’s Congress, hosted by Parkinson’s UK.

From Real To Sacred: “30 years of Parkinson’s; 24 years of marriage; 36 years of employment; 8 years of retirement; 21 years of fatherhood; 44 years of fishing; 15 years of photography…” Buz Williams

The above image, From Real To The Sacred, was the Gold Medal winner of the Royal Photographic Society’s 153rd International Print Exhibition this year. Here’s what Park had to say about it and the project: “Breaking Form is a narrative photographic study of Buz Williams and Parkinson’s disease, developed over the past 15 years within a context of its creators’ personal lives and shared professional backgrounds of theatre, movement and dance. The images are built on
small details that tumble out of memories and imagination, yet it is the perspective beyond the day-today reality of Parkinson’s imbued within the imagery, that offers inspiration to Buz, as well as the possibility of a personal connection for the viewer.

“Placing himself in the public sphere and gaze gives Buz a sense of power and self-recognition at a time when control is diminishing in his everyday life, yet the intimacy and tenderness of these portraits hopefully extends outwards
to remind people of the universality of our human condition.”

Plethora Of Delights: “My Ayurvedic guru warned me that eventually his magic powder would not be enough and that I would have to put my faith in chemicals…” Buz Williams

Piracicaba House by Isay Weinfeld

Santo Amaro House by Isay Weinfeld

This holiday home by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld comprises three perpendicular volumes built into a slope in Piracicaba, Brazil.

A half-submerged garage and storage area is the lowest of three elements and punctuated by a series of concrete pillars.

The ground floor has a curtain wall of glazing in front of the living and dining room to afford views of a swimming pool, while the adjacent wing is clad in vertical concrete slabs.

The first floor, which houses the bedrooms, sits above the kitchen and services with a roof terrace formed over the other wing.

Here’s some more from the architects:

This is a getaway house erected in the city of Piracicaba, 250km away from São Paulo.

Santo Amaro House by Isay Weinfeld

It is intended to serve as a meeting point for a family whose members are scattered across various cities around the state.

The 2,000m2 (21,500 ft2) land resulted from merging 2 corner-lots in a gated condominium.

Not only did the position of the house take into account the sloping contour of the land, but also its orientation (North), as to provide the bedrooms and social areas with the best possible sunlight.

Santo Amaro House by Isay Weinfeld

The distribution on 3 floors arranged in perpendicular axes allows the land displacement to be overcome naturally, and makes the garden accessible from any floor:

– the lower ground, semi subterranean and positioned in the lowest level of the land, parallel to the contour lines, houses storage areas, the mechanical room and garage – that standing on grid pillars.

Santo Amaro House by Isay Weinfeld

– the ground floor, laid out as an L and accessible from the street through an S-shaped ramp, houses the service areas and the lounge/dining room – the latter, fully encased in glass, on one side overlooks the back portion of the land and merges with the pool deck through wide sliding doors; on the other side, is shielded from the sun and secluded from the street by a long sun baffle made of large vertical concrete slabs, unevenly placed along the whole facade.

Santo Amaro House by Isay Weinfeld

– the upper floor, a volume that stretches perpendicularly to the contour of the land and that, at one end, cantilevers towards the street, and at the other is planted on the higher section of the land, houses the bedrooms and the den – the latter opening onto a large wooden deck, build on the ceiling slab over the lounge/dining room.

The swimming pool is snug in the nook of the “L” formed by the social and service areas, and the slope rising to the higher sections of the land.

Marcos Madia’s Bikoff folding bike concept is cool, but read the fine print, people!

pimg alt=”0bikoff.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/0bikoff.jpg” width=”468″ height=”931″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pSeveral blogs have published shots of Argentina-based A HREF=”http://www.coroflot.com/public/individual_profile.asp?individual_id=240287″ Marcos Madia’s/A Bikoff concept, a shortlisted finalist in the Seoul Cycle Design competition A HREF=”http://www.designboom.com/seoul_cycle_design_competition.html” as shown on Design Boom/A. However, there seems to be some confusion, as some other blogs are mistakenly claiming the bicycle is intended to fold into the briefcase itself. That’s neither accurate nor is it the point of the bike. As Madia explains [italics ours], /p

blockquote’Bikoff’ is a small foldeable bike which features a briefcase Iincorporated/I into the frame. there is an intimate relationship between the briefcase and the frame. the briefcase completes the frame, giving it great structure.

p…This project was aimed at those who do not use bicycles, those who drive their cars every morning to the office. ‘Bikoff’ was born to convince these people to leave their cars and to ride every morning to their offices./blockquote /p

pYou can check out the rest of Madia’s A HREF=”http://www.coroflot.com/public/individual_work.asp?individual_id=240287″ book on Coroflot./Abr /

Traveling Exhibition ‘BMW Guggenheim Labs’ to be Announced Today

Staying in New York a bit longer, after getting into all sorts of new media stuffs, bands the kids like, and art cars that go fast, cost a lot, but don’t always win races, the Guggenheim and BMW have finally found one another. According to the NY Times, later today a partnership will be announced between the two, bringing a program to life called “BMW Guggenheim Labs,” a series of traveling exhibitions that will hit three cities each year and camp out at each for three months. There will be lectures and events where “Guggenheim’s curators will invite leaders in the fields of architecture, art, science, design, technology and education to participate in discussions held in and around the structures about the complexities, realities and problems of urban living.” The program will run for six years and each of the exhibit spaces will be designed by nifty architecture firms. The first will be Atelier Bow-Wow, the Tokyo firm you might be familiar with for having worked with Droog building them both a house and a small hotel, both in Amsterdam. We’ll update this post once it’s all made official.

Workspace of the Week: Small-space simplicity in black

This week’s Workspace of the Week is TypeFiend’s (Gregory Han’s) closet office:

I don’t usually choose offices from our Flick pool that I know have already been highlighted on other websites for our Workspace of the Week selection. However, I’m so in love with TypeFiend’s office that I’m making an exception. Check out “The Black Hole Home Office” on Unplggd to see how a walk-in closet has been transformed into a home office paradise (well, at least for someone who isn’t claustrophobic). The office extends to the left where a printer, equipment, and office supplies are stored. Thank you, TypeFiend, for your submission to our Flickr pool.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.
