Oscar-Nominated Production Designer Robert Boyle Passes Away

Back to designing for moving pictures, some sad news this week with the passing of production design great Robert F. Boyle at an impressive 100 years. Oscar nominated for his art direction and production design work on classic films like The Birds, The Thomas Crown Affair (the original), and Fiddler on the Roof, his IMDb listing is nothing short of incredible. The LA Times files this great obituary looking back on Boyle and his career, and if you’ve never seen it, we highly recommend watching the short documentary about him, The Man on Lincoln’s Nose about his building a realistic set for the iconic conclusion of North by Northwest:

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

Spanish designer Oscar Diaz has proposed a key-cutting concept that allows duplicate keys to be 3D-printed and customised by shape, colour and texture for different locks.

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

Diaz imagines that keys could be scanned in public places, such as Post Offices, and the data of the key could be stored in a virtual safety box that could be remotely accessed and a duplicate printed.

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

The design allows keys to be clipped together, stored with existing keys on a key ring or attached directly to accessories such as wristbands when performing activities.

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

The project is part of the New Simplicity exhibition that asked a selection of designers to explore possible implementations for 3D-printing technologies in the near future.

The exhibition runs until 8 August at 203 Brompton Road, London.

Here’s more from Diaz:

‘While you sleep’ was commissioned for ‘New simplicity’ and exhibition about simple design curated by design critic Nuno Coelho. Nine designers were asked to investigate the possibilities of using 3D printing technology as a manufacturing tool in the near future.

My proposal question the traditional key cutting service, and propose a product/service scenario where the use of the 3D printing technology will facilitate the copy and storage of keys as data.

Since 3D data can be managed by parametric software and allow easy customization, the type of head can be chosen, and also the texture or color to differentiate the garage key, from the one for the front door house.

Post Office branches could provide the scanning service, and from the data your key would be made easily. You can then send it by e-mail to the key-printing machine, or store it online on a virtual safety box. If you ever lose you key, it will be ready for you to download and print. Making a key could be as easy as using a photo booth or a cash point.

While You Sleep by Oscar Diaz

The keys head shape has been redesigned so they can be clipped together without using a key ring. Accessories include a wristband and a button where is possible to clip one or two keys.

The system is compatible with existing keys so they can be mixed until the key-clip system fully replace the old keys.

A part from the pieces built with 3d printers, a variety of products which value simple solutions over visual complexity are also exhibited.

The exhibition runs from the 24 July to the 8 August 2010 at 203 Brompton Road, London SW3 1LA. The exhibition is part of the Brompton Design District cultural program.

The Art of Discarded Lottery Tickets

An artistic twosome realizes dream desires from forgotten scratch-offs

lottery1.jpg lottery2.jpg

Curious about how people spend their winnings after hitting it big with the lottery, collaborative artists Lauren Was and Adam Eckstrom channeled their research into astounding representational sculptures of dream desires like a Hummer, a yacht and a large home using scratch-off lottery tickets.

Working under the moniker Ghost of a Dream, the duo specifically match the monetary value of the lottery tickets to the price of each item. For example, the “Dream Home” (pictured at top) is made out of $70,000 of discarded tickets, and is complete with impressive decor, such as a chandelier, framed portraits, an “antique” clock and vase with budding flowers.

Finding that most lottery winners’ first purchase is a car, Ghost of a Dream built a full-scale hummer using $39,000 worth of colorful tickets. To the artists, these discarded scratch-offs represent unfulfilled dreams as well as money that could have been saved and possibly spent on the item itself.

See more from Ghost of a Dream at Yatzer, where the artists’ “One In a Million” kaleidoscopic collages (made from lottery tickets and romance novels) is also shown.

Finalists chosen for Levi’s Care to Air Design Challenge

pSix finalists have been chosen in Levi Strauss’ A HREF=”http://www.levistrauss.com/blogs/clothes-dryers-beware” Care to Air Design Challenge/A, which seeks clever and eco-friendly ways to dry clothes. The competition was formed after “a lifecycle assessment of a pair of Levi’s 501 jeans revealed that, on average, almost 60% of the climate impact comes during the consumer phase. Nearly 80% of that is due to the energy-intensive method chosen for drying.”/p

pThree of the finalists were chosen by A HREF=”http://www.myoocreate.com/” Myoo Create/A, the crowdsourcing company collaborating on the contest, and three were chosen by Levi’s. Our two faves both feature space-saving wall-mounted designs for clothing racks:/p

2012 Olympics Put Out Open Call for Torch Designs

0805torchhunt.jpg

As we’re now well past the midpoint of the year already, we continue to inch ever closer to 2012. And because there’s an Olympics going on that year, it’s time to figure out what the torch is going to look like. The absurdly long-titled London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, working with the UK’s Design Council, have just launched a call for a design for the official torch to be carried before the games. Entries will be accepted from Monday the 9th to Sunday the 22nd of this month, and like with all design/engineering-related calls for the 2012 games, the organizations require entries to be filtered through CompeteFor, a site put together for sorting through bids and submissions. The hunt will involve looking for industrial designers who will be able to not just design a handsome torch, but one that can also keep the flame lit in all types of weather and be functional with runners, bicyclists, and people in wheelchairs (more details are available on the Design Council’s site). They’d also like some cauldrons to put the fire in and some packaging to keep the torches in before and after the games. A fairly tall order, but they’re looking to assemble a whole team, not just one company, so individuals can apply as well (and as far as we’ve been able to tell, the call isn’t exclusive to UK residents). If you’ve been working on torch designs in your garage over the summer, here’s your chance to finally put them to the test (you didn’t really want to just waste all that effort to give Frankenstein a scare, now did you?)
