Digital Signage Coming to NYC Newsstands
Posted in: UncategorizedAs if purveyors of print media didn’t have enough to worry about, now digital is really hitting them where they live—newsstands. CEMUSA, provider of what it calls “street furniture,” has partnered with the high-tech display wizards at Show+Tell to replace the old-school poster billboards on select New York City newsstands (and those swell new bus shelters) with digital signage. Existing poster light boxes will be transformed with sunlight-readable LCD screens. As for what they’ll be showing, expect “an engaging content strategy that incorporates social media, news feeds, real-time HD video broadcasts, and of course—the revenue generating engine—third party advertising,” writes Show+Tell’s Manolo Almagro on DailyDOOH. WireSpring was selected to handle the software end of things, while Almagro credits “the fabrication and engineering ninjas” at Display Devices with figuring out “how to squish a 2 x 2 landscape-oriented matrix of Samsung’s 65″ and (1) 70″ outdoor readable LCD into the existing backlit poster light box,” which sounds rather painful. Look for the new digitally enhanced newsstands and bus shelters to hit NYC this fall.

It’ll Be Better
Posted in: Uncategorized Stream Francis and the Lights’ new album from a pioneering HTML5 site
The world’s first HTML5 embeddable album, Francis and the Lights’ It’ll Be Better site simplifies the music listening process for Apple’s new less Flash-friendly digital world. Developed by Muxtape founder Justin Ouellette, he created it specifically to play on the iPad and new iPhone 4, which otherwise can’t stream most music because of the operating system’s lack of Flash support. And, with this new site and the introduction of iOS 4, listeners can enjoy the album while simultaneously using other applications.
An elegant solution for promoting music, the It’ll Be Better site allows you to hear the full album, embed it anywhere on the web, watch the video for “Darling, It’s Alright” (which looks gorgeous on iPads), and download tracks directly from iTunes onto your device.

pWhat’s that photo of? Self-folding origami! Well, kind of. The Soft Robotics “Programmable Matter” developed by researchers at the A HREF=”http://micro.seas.harvard.edu/research.html” Harvard Microrobotics Laboratory/A under Professor Robert Wood consists of a sheet material lined with actuators. Which essentially means the darn things can fold themselves up in a predetermined way./p

pSure the technology’s in a primitive state, but man, think about how wicked this could be: You get a flat-pack in the mail, pull it out of the envelop, push the button, and boom–new iPhone! …And if that’s still quite some years off, well, I’d settle for a cool little crane./p

George Fereday’s Personal Blow Molding Gun

pFrustrated by the limited access to plastic blow-moulding equipment, a href=”http://www.georgefereday.com/”George Fereday/a went ahead and developed his own, outfitting a standard ‘mastic gun’ with a specially designed extrusion nozzle and air-compressor fitting. The tool is designed to work specifically with Polymorph plastic, which can be melted with hot water. First, a billet of the stuff is extruded into a cylinder, then it’s inflated inside a mold with an air compressor, then allowed to cool./p

pAs proof of concept, he made a mold for plastic bricks that could be stacked and lightly melted together to create temporary interior walls and retail displays. When finished with the bricks (or anything else made from this process), the plastic can be melted down and reused in the same way./p

Pardon Jack Johnson
Posted in: UncategorizedNo Mas and Barking Irons honor a heavyweight champ and civil rights hero with a new t-shirt
One hundred years ago this 4 July 2010, “The Fight of the Century” took place in Reno, Nevada. The first-ever black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson defended his title by defeating the “Great White Hope” Jim Jeffries and delivering a blow against racism. Despite the success, two years later Johnson was convicted and incarcerated under the Mann Act for his romance with a white woman.
In support of the upcoming Reno-based rally asking President Obama to pardon Johnson and finally clear his name, No Mas and Barking Irons teamed up to create the “Pardon Jack Johnson” t-shirt. A portion of the proceeds will go to PBS, which aired the provocative documentary, “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson” in encouragement of this stance.
Available in white and red, you can order the turn-of-the-century-style graphic tee online for $40.
