Hoarders season two premieres tonight on AE

Tonight is the premiere of the second season of the A&E television show Hoarders at 10/9c. We’ve written a few times about the first season of the show, and even heard from people who have been featured on the program in our comments section. I continue to have mixed feelings about it — I love that it is bringing a human face to this mental health issue and raising awareness, but I wish that there was less shock and awe factor in what is broadcast.

We’ve heard from a number of people associated with the show that the second season is going to talk more about treatment options and look more closely at the psychological aspects of the disorder than was the case in season one. I truly hope this is accurate because I believe the hoarders on the show deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I’m not saying that they weren’t in season one — I know from first-hand accounts that they were given excellent help behind the scenes during the filming of the episodes — but what translated onto the screen didn’t always reflect the entire process. I’m looking forward to tonight’s episode and seeing how the changes are implemented.

After the episode airs, feel welcome to jump onto our Unclutterer Forums and talk about it in our second season Hoarders thread. If you don’t get A&E, check out the official Hoarders website in a couple days where they will post the full episode online.

Victoria Beckham To Start A Modeling Agency?

imageWe definitely think Posh Spice could pull this one off! Victoria Beckham certainly knows enough about fashion and looking good and we’re pretty sure her modeling agency would be top of the line! Everyone would be dying to be a part of it. Victoria Beckham would be working on this exciting new modeling agency project with her manager Simon Fuller (you may know Simon Fuller as the creator of American Idol. He was also the manager of the Spice Girls). Clearly, Simon knows what he’s doing in the business world and we think Victoria has quite a few business smarts herself. According to a source, “Simon knows that Victoria is very savvy when it comes to fashion. His first foray into fashion was to team up designer Roland Mouret and Victoria, which was a huge success.” We’re sure Simon loves having Victoria on his side and the source says, “Victoria is a key asset to Simon and he wants her to take on a major role.” Simon already owns 50% of London modeling agency Storm Models and wants Victoria to set up something similar in New York. We can’t wait to see what Victoria’s model agency is all about; we bet all the girls will be absolutely stunning! Check out more info and pics by clicking over to our friends at Limelife!

Brooklyn Brine Pickles

Brooklyn_Brine_2.jpg

The Brooklyn food renaissance recently welcomed another local producer to its ranks with the addition of Brooklyn Brine, a pickling operation based in the burgeoning neighborhood of Greenpoint. Founded in August by Josh Egnew and Shamus Jones, with the recent addition of vegan blogger Joya Carlton, critics are already singing the new brand’s praises for its spirited approach to preserving.

From early-spring delectables like ramps and garlic scapes to late-harvest roots like turnips and winter radishes, this trio of self-proclaimed food nerds will pickle anything they can get grown locally and delivered fresh. “We never met a vegetable we didn’t like,” Carlton told us at a recent meeting.

Through a partnership with the regional distributor Angello’s, they get their pick of produce from a variety of farms outside the city. Orders are delivered regularly to the Greenpoint’s bustling brunch spot, Brooklyn Label, whose kitchen (through the generosity of Label owner Lynde McCormick) serves as Brooklyn Brine’s processing facility in the after hours. It’s not the easiest of arrangements—they get started with prep around 11:30pm and sometimes don’t finish until 8:30 the next day—but so far it’s produced fantastic results.

Egnew, Jones and Carlton pride themselves on choice ingredients (evaporated cane sugar; snow powdery sea salt) and creating unconventional pickling flavors, like curried squash or chipotle carrots. Using tanin-rich leaves in the process, like grape or horseradish, helps their veggies stay crisp and reduces the amount of salt required in the brine.

Ingredients notwithstanding, an intuitive sense of what spices and vegetables will make a happy marriage really sets Brooklyn Brine apart from their peers. The fennel beets have a tenderness, a delicate balance of sweet and sour rarely associated with a pickled root. Hints of cumin, coriander and mustard seed all commingling comfortably make the Moroccan beans exotic yet familiar. And while the aforementioned curried squash emphasizes the curry, the pairing left me intrigued to see what the trio will come up with next.

With winter just around the corner, Brooklyn Brine will be busying itself with root vegetables for months to come. While esteemed local establishments such as Bedford Cheese Shop, Marlow & Daughters and Urban Rustic already carry their pickles, Angello’s will soon export vegetables preserved the Brooklyn Brine way to foodies outside the city. But don’t expect to see these jars on Midwest or West Coast shelves any time soon; true to their locavore roots, Brooklyn Brine is happy—and busy—enough with the size of their operation. This ain’t no Vlasic.

Hot In The Hive: Lime Crime Makeup Magic Dust

imageOne look at Lime Crime Makeup’s webpage — which looks like a unicorn barfed rainbows and shooting stars all over it — and you can’t help but wonder what sort of happy pills this chick is on. But hey — as long as this unnaturally sunshine-y outlook produces gorgeous sparkly shades to add to my makeup collection, I can dig it! Lime Crime Magic Dust is a line of highly-pigmented loose powder eyeshadow, similar to MAC’s loose pigment (but cheaper!), that comes in 23 different bold, shimmery shades. Dust on lids to wear as shadow, or apply wet for more intense color and use as eyeliner. Despite the tag line, “So bright, it’s illegal,” I don’t think you’ll get arrested for having sparkly shadow, but Lime Crime’s collection is seriously vibrant if you’re looking for bold color!

Price: $12 each
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add Lime Crime Magic Dust to the Hive.

Lemondrop Obsession: Calorie-Burning Shoes From Earth Footwear

imageCalorie-burning shoes — no doubt you’ve seen them around. They always look like orthopedic running shoes or something a nurse would wear to work. That’s why I got so excited when I saw Earth Footwear at my local comfy shoe store. Earth shoes are so stylish and come in everything from sandals to boots. I, of course, got boots because we’re heading into the winter months. It’s not the “negative heel technology” or the anatomic arch support, or even the Biofoam cushion inside that makes me love them (though I love anyone who has come up with so many ways to make my feet feel comfortable). I love they way they look, and shoes are a major obsession of mine, not to mention I’m new to New York City and going to need a good boot for the winter. I feel like these are going to do the trick.
