David Hillman Curtis Releases James Victore-Designed Artist Series Collection

If you regularly use the internet (the thing you’re looking at right now) and you find yourself on design blogs here and there (here you are), it’s without question that you’ve run across the work of filmmaker David Hillman Curtis. Besides making his own short films, the designer/director/writer has put together a handful of popular short documentaries in his “Artist Series,” profiling industry big shots like Milton Glaser and Paula Scher. Now Curtis has put them all together in a special, limited-edition package, designed by James Victore no less, for sale on his site. To mark the release, The Morning NewsRosecrans Baldwin interviewed Curtis for the NY Times‘ The Moment blog, which is well worth your time. And to refresh your memory on how great these profiles are, here’s Curtis’ piece on Stefan Sagmeister‘s launch of “Things I Have Learned So Far in My Life”:

Unclutterer nominated for Los Angeles Organizing Award

Each year, the Los Angeles Organizing Awards literally roll out the red carpet to honor individuals and companies in the professional organizing world. For the first time, Unclutterer.com has been nominated for one of these prestigious awards in the “Best Organizing Website or Blog” category.

Now through December 15 you can cast your vote for your favorite products, services, and organizers in the many categories. Anyone can vote — you don’t need to be a professional organizer — and those of us at Unclutterer would love your support if you think that we’re worthy in the Website category. The winners will be announced in late January at the historic Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. The Los Angeles Organizing Awards are the organizing world’s equivalent of the Oscars or Emmys, and we’re truly honored to be nominated for a 2010 award.

I recommend checking out the nominations in all of the categories, even if you don’t vote for us or vote for any of the options. It’s nice to see a listing of the best of the best in the industry. I learned about the Canadian organizing television show Neat through last year’s voting process and many other great organizing and uncluttering resources that had never made it onto my radar screen.

For example, do you know about the other sites in the “Best Organizing Website or Blog” category? If you’ve never checked them out, I suggest giving them a peek as they are written by some amazing organizers:

The Clutter Diet Blog, written by Lorie Marrero:

Jeri’s Organizing and Decluttering News, written by Jeri Dansky:

LifeOrganizers.com, written by Paul & Valerie Holstein:

Simplify101 Blog/Website, written by Aby & Jay Garvey:

Again, now through December 15 you can cast your vote for your favorite products, services, and organizers in the many categories, and obviously we would truly appreciate your support if you think we’re worthy in the “Best Organizing Website or Blog” category.

Traveling with Furniture. Literally

Hmm… This innovative concept design by designer Erik De Nijs functions as luggage, but can be converted into a comfy set of stylish furniture for those extended layovers.

De Nijs explains his thinking behind the project:

The ‘suited case’ is a project which is inspired on the idea of people waiting during their trip. People often go and rest sitting on their suitcases, that is the starting point of this design.

Halloween costume for a chair

halloweenchair.jpg

Hongtao Zhou, maker of frozen furniture (blogged earlier this year), continues his seasonal exploration with From dumpster to Halloween and Christmas. A weird title for a weird (and great) project.

According to Zhou, the chair was found lying broken amongst holiday ads in a Madison, Wisconsin dumpster. Zhou concluded that the chair must have been thrown away prior to seasonal decorating and asked himself, “Should a chair also have holidays?” In response, he fixed this chair and turned it into a Halloween character, with sawdust and wood scraps used as the dripping “blood” of trees.

From Zhou: “Enjoy Halloween and Christmas my chair friend.”

We’re still trying to figure out the Christmas part…will this chair receive gifts?

A Look at the LAPDs New Home Base

1026parker.jpg

Getting out of the Midwest for a moment, we turn to the first major review of the new Los Angeles Police Department‘s headquarters by local top critic, Christopher Hawthorne. If you’ve seen any film or television show involving any sort of policing in the past half-century (like Dragnet for example), you’re likely familiar with the previous headquarters, the iconic Parker Center in downtown Los Angeles. This weekend marked the move from that building to one just down the street, a new “Parker Center” (though that name transfer hasn’t been entirely agreed upon just yet), marking as LA Times writer Ruben Vives says “ends an era.” Critic Hawthorne likes the building more than he’d expected to, finding portions of it occasionally interesting and functional, but beyond that doesn’t seem overly thrilled with the new headquarters, designed by architects Paul Danna and Jose Palacios. He pines a bit for the old Center, yet admits that’s likely because it’s “freighted with symbolism.” Outside of Hawthorne’s review, the most controversial portion of the new building thus far seems to be the sculptures lining its exterior, designed by local artist Peter Shelton, which the city’s police chief has said “looks like ‘some kind of cow splat'” and others have asked “What kind of stupid thing is this?” So there’s your proof that one project can’t please everyone in every capacity.

Some unusual helmets

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this, but sport helmet design has really taken off the last five years…I think it’s really cool to see these kinds of products getting more sculptural and designed. Anyone else have some good picks?
