Jon Kolko: The End of an Era

Jon Kolko, just back from the conference down south, has some provocative ideas about industrial design and future of the IDSA. Here’s the start:

I’ve just returned from the IDSA conference in Miami, and I’m both convinced that, in ten years, there won’t be an IDSA conference to go to – and that isn’t a bad thing. I don’t mean this in a disparaging sense; I enjoyed the conference, caught up with old friends, made new friends, and learned a bit. But a trend that I’ve observed at past conferences is only more evident this year, and it’s patronizing to continue to skirt what is becoming increasingly obvious: the IDSA has served a valuable role in the evolution of design as a professional discipline, and has helped advance the field to a point where the IDSA is now essentially irrelevant. Design has outgrown “Industrial Design”, and a professional organization cannot exist only in the form of self-maintenance.

I’ll explain, as I realize this may come across as both pretentious and self-righteous (and I intend it to be neither).

Hot In The Hive: Kymera Magic Wand

imageIf you’re a Harry Potter fan and you’ve got multiple remote controls sitting on your coffee table (or lost in the crevices of your sofa) then here’s something right up your alley. The Kymera magic wand may look like a prop straight out of Hogwarts, but you can actually use it to create some magic of your own! It is a universal remote with an accelerometer inside, where you can program 13 different functions activated by gestures such as rotating, flicking, and tapping. Since you program the gestures yourself and an available practice mode, there’s no need to be Hermione Granger to get to the channel you want. That means you can put away all those remote controls and replace it with something totally fun, unique, and will mystify anyone who encounters it. It’s currently available for pre-order and ships October 1st, which means you’ll totally have it in time to impress your guests at your Halloween party!

Price: 49.95 GBP
Who Found It: facadeindreams was the first to add the Kymera Magic Wand to the Hive.

Children in High Heels — Yes or No?

imageOK, we’ve sat idly by while people pierced their infants’ ears, painted tiny faces with makeup and lipstick, and took their small children along on Mommy and Me spa days. But we have to draw the line at tot-size high heels. No one should have to totter in uncomfortable footwear before their time. (Especially when your mom is taunting you with sensible flats !) What do you think: Are Suri’s high heels and fashion-plate look cute as a button, or freakin’ weird? Check out the full article and leave your opinion by clicking over to our friends at Lemondrop!

Gap Founder Donald Fisher Dies at 81

fishers.jpgDonald G. Fisher, who founded Gap, Inc. in 1969 with wife Doris, died yesterday of cancer. He was 81. “Today we lost a friend, a mentor, and a great visionary,” said Gap CEO Glenn Murphy in a statement issued last night. “Don and Doris took a simple idea and turned it into a brand recognized as a cultural icon throughout the world and changed the face of retail forever.”

Legend has it that the Fishers founded the company on August 21, 1969 after a frustrating experience exchanging a pair of jeans that didn’t fit. That year, the couple raised $63,000 to launch a single jeans and music store called The Gap (named for “the generation gap”) in San Francisco. In 2008, Gap reported annual sales of approximately $14.5 billion. Fisher served as chairman and CEO of the company from 1969 through 1995 and as chairman through 2004. He held the roles of director and chairman emeritus until his death.

Donald Fisher Decides to Keep Art Collection in San Francisco, Headed to SFMOMA

0928fishsanfran.jpg

Back in early August, there were some big concerns in the San Francisco art community that GAP founder Donald Fisher might have been looking to place his massive art collection outside of the Bay Area, perhaps as protest after seeing his years of work go up in smoke when he finally had to pull the plug on building a museum in the Presidio. But now all San Franciscans can rest easy as they breathe a collective sigh of relief with the news that Fisher has struck up a deal with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, who will be hosting the more than 1,000 pieces of artwork he owns for at least the next 25 years. How’d SFMOMA convince him? Promising to add a whole new wing always tends to grease some wheels. Here’s a bit:

Works from the Fisher Collection will be on display in a new wing that will also incorporate art from the museum’s collection. In addition, works from the Fisher Collection will be interwoven with SFMOMA’s modern and contemporary holdings in existing galleries. Together, they will form one of the world’s most important collections of art of the past 50 years, the museum said.

Pictured above are Dinner for Tonight by Another Ceramic and Flat Lighting by DMO. Shown below are the Puzzle shower system by Cebien and Toro Origin – a wall paint by Toro Living Solutions that is made from purely natural materials, including a special selection of herbs that create a subtle scent, bringing some nature feeling into urban environments.

Workspaces of the rich and famous

Today’s first post is a quick one. I simply want to direct you to a fun feature that ran last week over on Lifehacker: “Nine Workspaces Where Famous Folks Get Stuff Done.”

We’ve shown Al Gore’s piled space here on Unclutterer before, but the others are new to us. I especially love the video of David Allen’s desk — simple and extremely productive:

Now I’m really curious what all of these famous peoples’ assistant’s desks look like …
