Orange RockCorps

This is a conceptual app that links face recognition software to social networking profiles. Ok, it’s a bit scary, but it’s a lot cool!

Inflatable Surfboard Bag

ProtoII_QSmodel.jpg

Improving on basic surf bag design, Nicholas Martino dreamed up a way to make surfer’s lives easier by adding inflatable chambers for more protection. Although it’s still a prototype, we hope to see it pushed into production soon.

The cover not only offers supreme defense from dings, but also makes for a convenient way to transport boards via a cushy handhold and it doubles as a sleeping mat for those who like to hike out to their favorite breaks or sleep in the back of their truck when anticipating swells. My favorite aspect is that Martino cleverly recommends filling it with helium, adding a little lift to lighten the load.

A simple and thoughtful multipurpose design, we hope to see this product in stores soon. Keep your eyes out in the future for more from Martino. Contact him at nicholas [dot] martino [at] bigpond [dot] com.

If you can’t wait, we found another version from Soma with similar protective features (pictured above). The added convenience of compact portability—the cover deflates and rolls into a small carrying bag—is reason enough to purchase. Available from Soma for $150.

Five Steps to a Better Design Brief

Design Sojourn’s Clark-Kent-esque mystery-man editor, DT, has written up “Five Steps to a Better Design Brief,” culled from both his experience working with entrepreneurs and his stint as a Senior Design Manager at an unnamed consumer electronics firm.

The (paraphrased) bullet-points are

– “Elevator Pitch”
– Hierarchy of Needs
– Communicating Key Benefits
– Design Within the Big Picture, and
– How You Gonna Make It?

Those of you that have written up briefs before can probably figure out what these mean; or you can read the full article here and see if you and Clark are on the same page.

Urbia Furniture System for Small Apartments in Big Cities is an awesome idea. So what the heck happened to it?

0urbia.jpg

I realize it’s absurd, but having helped more than one friend move house in New York City, I often wish furniture was designed to neatly fit in East Village stairwells and coffin-sized elevators.

Obra Architects have answered my psychic pleas with their awesome Furniture Expansion System for Small Apartments in Big Cities, designed for “lifestyles of minimal materiality:”

The System is composed of hollow wood panels and cabinet units that can partition a space vertically or horizontally depending on the potential of the existing interior. These units are designed for maximum structural performance, minimum weight and ease of installation, relying on hollow 1/2 ash plywood construction and a maximum size of 2×8 feet that fits through doors and onto elevator cabs.

The system can be deployed vertically to define partitions or horizontally to create loft floors by staggering the 8-foot panels to reinforce each other to a span of up to 20 feet.

It is manufactured off-site utilizing CNC technology and requires only dry assembly for its site installation.

It allows maximum use of minimum space with the possibility of endless reconfiguration and the potential of taking the rooms with you when moving out.

The panel construction relies on the use of semi-concealed fasteners, which punctuate the surfaces with access openings that characterize the walls and floors with anunintentional ornamentation that is derived from the necessities of its assembly.

It was developed way back in 2007, so the fact that it hasn’t hit the big-time yet means they’ve either got a crappy PR machine, or it’s another good idea that’s been buried in the avalanche of better-publicized mediocrity that plagues us all and will never see the light of day.

Next time I get the call, I’m gonna tell my friends to hire movers; in this economy, the going rates have probably dropped substantially.

Where Would Don Draper Stay?

st. regis.jpgFans of Mad Men will recall from the show’s season two premiere that Don and Betty Draper celebrated Valentine’s Day 1962 with a trip to the Savoy Hotel, where they endured some…technical difficulties before ordering room service and watching Jackie Kennedy‘s televised White House tour. Don and Betty’s plans for the third season, which kicks off August 16, are still anyone’s guess, but Starwood is hoping that die-hard fans will swap the Savoy for the St. Regis and take advantage of the hotel’s new Mad Men package. Even at a starting price of $895 (what recession?), we think it’s one suite deal.

Beginning next Sunday, guests checking into the St. Regis New York can opt for a Mad Men experience that includes in-room dining (shrimp cocktail, New York strip, apple cobbler), cocktails (Bloody Marys), and personal shopping at Bergdorf Goodman with a shopper who specializes in 1960s fashion (might we suggest a zippy frock by Lisa Perry?). But wait, there’s more! Upon arrival, guests will receive a copy of George Lois: On Creating the Big Idea, which should spark a spirited debate about the largely forgotten legacy of Julian Koenig, Lois’s former partner. And because nothing completes an illusion like toiletries, guests will find “Don Draper’s cologne and Betty Draper’s signature red lipstick” waiting for them. Ready to book? Call Denise Harnett (212-339-6738) and tell her UnBeige sent you. To quote the immor(t)al Roger Sterling, “See you at the St. Regis!”
