How people in the US spend their day

The New York Times has a fascinating set of graphics about how different groups of people in the U.S. spend their time.

The data for the graphics came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey. The people surveyed were over the age of 15 and were asked to record what they did every minute of the day. I am a little surprised by some of the data, but mostly it is to be expected. I’m especially interested in the “household activities” category, as it is probably the most closely tied to uncluttering and cleaning activities.

Americans typically eat lunch between 12:10 and 12:20 p.m. and dinner at 6:10 to 6:40 p.m. What little socializing takes place happens between 5:50 and 8:00 p.m. (and people with advanced degrees appear to do the least amount of socializing in the evenings but the greatest amount of household activities). People without children work the least and socialize the least in comparison to people with children. And, women do more household activities than men.

To check out all the different sets of data, select the words in the chart above the graph:

And to see specific percentages, move your arrow on the top of the graph.

How do you compare to your peers? I definitely play more sports than others in my age bracket (you can only see “sports” labeled on the graph for the category Age 15-24). I think it would be extremely interesting to see how people in other countries spend their time.

Impressions from Istanbul Design Weekend 2009

Guest post by Esin Arsan. Check out her Core77 gallery of IDW 2009 highlights here!

This year, Istanbul Design Weekend took place between the 18th and 21st of June, with the theme “Mediterranean Design between Present and Future”. The four-day event offered two sets of activities, linked by a focus on Mediterranean design. The first group consisted of major exhibitions and cultural initiatives, while the second group allowed ambitious visitors to tour all the participating showrooms, malls and design stores in Istanbul, who were invited to participate in a competition for best installation around the fair’s theme.

Istanbul Design Week used to take place at the old Galata Bridge in Balat. However this year, the city itself—especially the European side—became the exhibition venue for the event. This was a special opportunity to visit the local design firms in their own environment. There were problems posed by spreading into the city, however, like the insane amount of time required to tour all events and the poor way-finding signage, especially for people from outside the city. It is rare to find two parallel streets in many parts of Istanbul due to its hilly terrain and old city planning. Additionally, the maps provided for each event zone were less informational and more abstract graphics. People at Lunapark told us on the first day of the event that they had already heard numerous complaints about this and were seriously considering placing additional signage on the streets to give better directions to the visitors.

Our adventurous tour in Zone 1, which covered the Taksim, Beyoglu and Galata area, brought us to the doorsteps of Ilio, whose showroom was one of the highlights of the event. In fact, it won first place in the weekend’s installation competition. The housewares brand of the Istanbul-based design firm Demirden Design, Ilio has won several Red Dot and IF awards. Kimber Modern Bed and Breakfast

KimberModernHotel.jpg

While in Austin recently, I spent a couple of nights at a beautifully designed new hotel called the Kimber Modern, located in the happening SOCO area, just a short hop, skip and sideways roll to the bustling hive of restaurants and cafes along South Congress. The hotel features more than a few twists, including stunningly elegant and contemporary architecture with subtle splashes of color to break up the overall white-walled minimalism. Clever design touches, such as communal hammocks made from car belts and a giant tank churning liters of water for a calming, almost Zen-like effect, add to the atmosphere too. (All photos by Alison Zavos)

KimberModernHotel2.jpg

Another quirky but practical touch, the Kimber Modern lacks door keys. Instead, guests choose a four-digit password when making their booking and this gives them access to both the main building and the door to their room, a surprisingly efficient system. In the rooms themselves, cheerful colors mesh with the classic austere lines, while fun and vibrant artwork above the beds, illustrate the cultural fermentation of Austin, Texas.

Book rooms through their site, with rack rates starting at $250 per night.

Annie Leibovitzs Financial Troubles Continue as Art Capital Group Files Lawsuit

0804leibsue.jpg

If you were looking to get into the pop-photography art market, now might be just the time to plop down a few bucks and buy an original Annie Leibovitz photo, if just to help out the financially-troubled artist, who seems to have seen everything go from bad to much worse. It’s become common knowledge now that the famous photographer had run into a bit of high-profile money troubles over these past few months, owing lots of money for taxes, mortgages, and other miscellaneous financial creditors. Now, as Bloomberg reports, the Art Capital Group has gone after Leibovitz, saying she has failed to follow an agreement she signed in order to receive a series of loans totaling around $24 million. So on top of dealing with her growing financial concerns and currently having to sell off the rights to her work, now she has Art Capital and their lawsuit to deal with, claims her representatives say are completely untrue:

“This is part of Art Capital’s continued harassment and attention-getting efforts,” the statement said. “There has been tension and dispute since the beginning. Annie is in the same shoes as many other people involved with Art Capital. For now, her attention remains on her photography and on continuing to organize her finances.”

Vogue Australia Celebrates 50 With Illustrated Covers

imageWhile Anna Wintour has been at work making her magazine “recession-friendly,” the international Vogue editions have been heading in an artsier direction lately with innovative collaborations and special editions all around. Now, Vogue Australia has also decided to do something a bit different. For its 50th anniversary, the magazine is putting out a commemorative issue (September 2009) featuring the work of famous fashion and celeb illustrator, David Downton. In four separate covers, Downton sketched Cate Blanchett in vintage styles that recall the days before photography. It’s a great reminder of the history behind the magazine, as well as fashion’s journey through the years. To read more, head on over to The Frisky!

Grado SR60i and New GR8 Headphones

Grado60i.jpg

For over fifty years Grado has been making audio equipment in Brooklyn, introducing high-end dynamic headphones in the late ’80s.

We’ve been using the small company’s entry-level SR60i headphones (pictured right), a pair that for the $80 price tag delivers high-quality, crisp sound that competes with the larger, pricier brands.

The SR60i‘s bare-bones design wins points for its utilitarian appeal, fitting comfortably around noggins. While the foam ear cushions may not initially enclose and hug the way more expensive leather-cushioned models do, the foam eventually molds to a natural fit with ears. From there, music sounds crisp and evenly distributed, with clean treble even with the bass turned way up.

In two weeks, Grado will release a new model , their first “in-ear transducer” or what we consumers refer to as the ear bud (pictured below).

Gradogr8.jpg

Grado says the new model, dubbed the GR8, will be smaller and lighter than the competition and no doubt they’ll bring the same musical clarity that we have come to expect from this local brand. We’re excited to take them for a test run.
