Aissa Logerot’s graf-LED lets you tag the light fantastic

French designer Aissa Logerot’s cool Halo light is for graffiti artists who want to use light and long-shutter photography instead of aerosol. Halo is shaped like a can of spraypaint, but features an LED light at the business end; the user can change the intensity and color of the light, and when it runs out of juice, there’s a neat solution–shake the can vigorously to power up the battery.

New Balance x 580 Snowboarding Boot

Although I’m melting away in high summer (and enjoying it), seeing the 580 x New Balance Snowboarding Boot at the Agenda apparel trade show in Huntington Beach last week made me long for the flurries to start falling. The result of a collaboration between snowboarding apparel company 686 and New Balance, the boot intertwines the hallmarks of a New Balance sneaker (its Rollbar stability and cushioning) and 686’s lacing system. What’s more, they’ve added in the Recco avalanche rescue system, which helps rescuers find boarders in the event they get buried.

The boots look like a pair of kicks and they’re meant to feel like wearing sneakers, likely winning fans who already enjoy New Balance on dry terrain. They’ll hit shelves in August, with price and retail locations info to come closer to the launch date.

Reinier de Jong’s Kops chair makes cubes comfortable

0kops_1.jpg

Reinier de Jong’s solid beechwood KOPS chair looks like the seat is made in the same way as those end-grain butcher blocks–but there’s a twist, or should we say, a stretch: the cubes for the seating surface are actually bound together internally with elastic rope, so it flexes to fit your fanny.

Bustler and Archinect Launch Life Forever Competition to Design Michael Jackson Monument

0804mjcomp.jpg

While this writer couldn’t (and still can’t) wrap his head around all this Michael Jackson hubbub surrounding the singer’s death, that isn’t to say we object to you feeling any sort of genuine emotions toward the man and his passing. We just have a little trouble separating the person from the music (Phil Spector and Ike Turner were great musicians, too, is all we’re saying). But if you aren’t the grumpy jerk this writer is and you’ve got the itch to memorialize Jackson, Bustler and Archinect have teamed up with just the thing. They’ve launched Live Forever: The Michael Jackson Monument Design Competition, which asks readers to submit some kind, any kind, of design to honor the King of Pop. Will your monument be built? We’re guessing that’s not very likely, as we’re sure the contracts on an official one will be fought over for the next decade or two. Though maybe we’ll see it appear in some sort of miniature form. And hey, there are prizes to be announced soon, so there’s your extra incentive right there. We’re eager to see how it all turns out and what people come up with. You have until August 22nd, when the submission window closes for good.

Antrepo Design’s amusing Spoticam lamp provides illumination while making you freakin’ paranoid. It’s also a great way to create tension between you and your roommates/spouse; mount a couple of these around the house and find a way to frequently work the word “trust” into everyday conversations.

Tits, Arse and Hellfire

Type designer Seb Lester has been taking a break, of late, from producing typefaces to work on a series of playful posters and prints – all of which showcase his interest in typographic illustration. A show of these prints (Lester’s first solo exhibition) opens at Newcastle’s Electrik Sheep Gallery this week…

“Someone who loves cooking doesn’t just want to make fish and chips I guess,” says Lester of his break from creating whole typefaces. “I have extremely broad taste in letterforms,” he continues. “In some respects this show is my reaction to having designed corporate typefaces so much for so long, which are inherently conservative in nature. I love designing robustly modern industrial type, but I also want to indulge my passion for other more expressive and sensual lettering styles. That’s really what this show is all about.”

Here are a few prints that will feature in the show:

The exhibition runs until August 29 at Electrik Sheep Gallery, 22 Pink Lane, Newcastle NE1 5DW

Nathan Shedroff’s design courses…for free!

Nathan Shedroff, who we interviewed earlier this year, has just released the teaching materials for three design studio courses developed around his popular design books Design is The Problem, Experience Design 1.1 and Making Meaning. Published under a Creative Commons license, the material is free to use, and “meant to help design and business educators teach concepts of sustainability, meaning, and experience design.”

Shedroff’s taken this to the next level—in addition to syllabi, you can find presentations in three file formats, evaluation criteria guidelines and assignment templates, all ready to go (just fill in the instructor name) but also highly adaptable to changes in the design industry and course context. Definitely worth a look for any design educator, and the rest of us could learn a thing or two as well.

Win $15,000 to ignite change!

We’re excited to announce the Design Ignites Change 2009 Implementation Award, which will grant $15,000 to a design concept that has the ability to ignite change within their local community. The parameters are broad, but the concepts must address a pressing social need within a community, be implemented within that community and deliver positive, measurable results.

The award is available to creative professionals and universities engaged in youth mentoring programs around social issues or universities using design thinking to address social issues. The eligibility seems a bit tricky, so be sure to read up on the guidelines.

Deadline: December 31, 2009
