Could GAP founder Donald Fisher pull a François Pinault and take his extraordinary art collection elsewhere after ambitious plans for a hometown museum fizzled? That’s the fear of the San Francisco art community, now that the Gap founder has abandoned his plan for a museum in the Presidio after preservationists balked. While Fisher would prefer to keep the art in San Francisco, museums around the country are eyeing the collection, and Alex Tourk, a spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times that Fisher will consider different locations. Among museums that have expressed interest are those in Oakland, California and St. Paul, Minnestota. “No major art museum in Los Angeles has come forward,” added the LAT.

There are also rumors that Fisher might house his collection in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where he is a board member. He has negotiated with the museum in the past and still considers the option open. In addition, the De Young Museum is pursuing the collection.

“His priority is to keep the collection in San Francisco, and that’s as detailed as he’s going to get,” Tourk said. “There isn’t a site that’s on a list as his No. 1 priority.”
