Aperture in New York is currently showing an exhibition in remembrance of the world-renowned photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in Misurata, Libya on April 20.

The show features two video pieces by Hetherington: Sleeping Soldiers, shown above in a single-channel version, and Diary, below. The video essay Sleeping Soliders was filmed in 2009 in Afghanistan, while Hetherington was shooting the award-winning documentary Restrepo with Sebastian Junger. It features soldiers of a US Airborne Infantry platoon based in the Korengal Valley of Eastern Afghanistan. The film is being shown in its original form, as a three-screen installation, at Aperture.

Hetherington described Diary, which was filmed in 2010, as “a highly personal and experimental film that expresses the subjective experience of my work, and was made as an attempt to locate myself after ten years of reporting. It’s a kaleidoscope of images that link our western reality to the seemingly distant worlds we see in the media.”

Both films feature editing and sound design by Magali Charrier. The exhibition at Aperture will continue until June 23, more info is at aperture.org.
