The good ol’ days of ID school: Turning garbage into storage
Posted in: UncategorizedNecessity is the mother of invention, and nowhere does this hold more true than in the typical ID school’s studio corrals. Combine a) the broke-ass student’s lifestyle with b) a need for specific tools with c) an entire university’s worth of cast-off garbage, and you wind up with the jury-rigged artifacts every student had on their desk in my alma mater’s ID room: Toilet-paper-roll marker organizers, bent-coat-hanger Dremel holders, blue-foam X-acto knife racks.
Toolcrib’s “11 Hardware Storage Plans: Tips, Ideas and Plans for Fastener Organization” reminds me of that time, with their projects turning Altoid tins, coffee cans, DVD containers, ice cube trays, microwaveable food containers, etc. into useful storage items.
Like the stuff in that ID room, a lot of it is practical and decidedly un-pretty. You can blame the ugliness on the parents: Mother Necessity isn’t exactly a looker, and Father Cast-Off Garbage, well, he’s got a nice personality.
