Umbrella That Stands

Search Umbrella on Yanko Design and you will see many concepts that try to make it blend into the background, when on the go. Flexibler is one of the most refined solutions that I have come across. The umbrella handle bends and can be used in different positions, it retains its original form when needed.

Flexibler’s handle is made from flexible metal on the inside and skid-proof rubber outside.

Flexibler is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept winner.

A Little Better Umbrella

However necessary, the nature of an umbrella’s design, no matter how compact or easy to use, makes it somewhat cumbersome. If you’ve tried carrying anything in the rain then you know that feel! The Rotation Handle Umbrella is an easy fix that makes things just a little easier. The hooked handle rotates at the base, making it easy to throw a purse, sack, or grocery bag on so you and your goodies stay dry! Genius!

You Can’t Touch This!

Aptly put by the designers, the Lizard Umbrella sheds its handle as a defensive mechanism against thieves. What this means is that you get to take the umbrella handle with you, when it needs to be deposited in a public place, like a restaurant’s umbrella stand. Without its handle, the umbrella appears to be broken and less desirable!

The tip of the umbrella stem is embossed with lines that slot only into the matching handle – much like how a key only fits into its corresponding lock. This prevents Lizard Umbrella users from mistaking someone else’s umbrella or their own.

Knuckle-safe Umbrella

I simply love the clever use of a knuckle-supported form of the Brolly Rain Umbrella! It not only offers a more secure way of holding the umbrella but like the designer say, the unique finger hole grip allows your thumbs to remain free for safely texting or e-mailing in the rain (something no other umbrella can claim).

Because of its unique grip, it relieves pressure on peoples’ hands and is very useful for those that suffer from arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Avoiding The Drench

Imagine getting soaked by a car-splash, on your way to work or an important meeting. I’ve been through it one too many times thanks to the heavy monsoons my city experiences. The Rain Shield offers a shield-like umbrella and is crafted with a single curved steel wire and a telescopic rod. It has no pointed ends or sharp edges, and it won’t blow inside out in windy conditions. Sounds too good to be true!

But it is true, because I saw this at the red dot award: design concept ceremony in Singapore. Designer Liu Li-Hsiang demonstrated to me how this umbrella easily folds and compresses into a 180-millimetre-diameter disc that can be stored in a bag. Have a look at the video and judge for yourself.

Pop Pop Bang

Lean On Me

Someone has rightly said that design need not be complicated, if you peel the layers of fluff, you will be left with a clear perception of good design. The ‘Lean-able Umbrella’ follows this thought and is a very intuitive and simple design. The handle end has been redesigned with end points that feature a non-slip silicon pad. People tend to lean their umbrellas against the wall, and this design addresses that situation effectively.

Lean-able Umbrella is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Colorful Umbrellas Installation

Une très belle installation de parapluies multicolores dans la ville de Águeda au Portugal. Une rue complète a été entièrement décorée avec des parapluies suspendu et flottant dans les airs, le tout capté en images par la photographe Patricia Almeida. Shade Under The Lampbrella

The concept of the Lampbrella is as romantic as getting wet in the rains with your partner. The design incorporates a rain and motion sensor into the shaft of the streetlamp and opens up the umbrella canopy when it rains. It’s a clever integration of a street lamp and umbrella, but my only worry is that it may end up injuring someone while opening or closing. So till that open-close system is not refined, lets just call this a romantic solution!

Giesen/Leenders Photography
