Paige stopped by this afternoon and look what she gave me: numbered napkin rings. Thanks, Paige! {more images on Flickr if you’re so inclined…}

Type Tuesday: Ed Nacional’s Tiepography

Ed Nacional visited UPPERCASE earlier this year and I was impressed with his intelligence and thoughtfulness. He showed me his temporary website and as soon as I saw the first few letters of his “Tiepography” project, I had to see more! Ed completed the alphabet made from ties and it is featured in issue 1 of our magazine. His newly launched website is worth a visit and I look forward to seeing more posts in his blog, humourously entitled, “Talking to Myself.”

A very talented graphic designer, Ed is completing his studies at Parsons and he has just been chosen as this year’s design intern at the New York Times! Yay Ed!

Type Tuesday: labels

I found this book many years ago in a used bookshop in Montreal. I’ve always been fond of the classic red-bordered label and this book cover is particularly beautiful. The labels became an inspiration for a recurring design motif in the magazine.

Type Tuesday: contents

Here’s the image from issue 1’s table of contents (above), and some outtakes (below) in which I experimented with ink and rubber stamps on balloons.

CR Taxi: Made In Mumbai

In January Creative Review incorporated woodblock type from São Paulo and hand-lettering from Amsterdam for the February issue. Determined to stay consistent within this theme of “taking a list of the issue’s content and asking a contributor to create a layout for us in their own style.” CR referred back to a trip to Mumbai for inspiration for the April “Type and Typography” issue and commissioned taxi artists from Mumbai to work their magic.

For any design-aware visitor, Mumbai’s yellow and black taxis, which constitute a major part of the city’s horrendous traffic, are a wondrous sight. The majority are richly decorated with a litany of the driver’s favourite things: like a MySpace page on wheels.

Head over to CR Blog for a detailed post documenting the story and process of developing their very own CR Taxi.

P-Funk and the Font Allstars

Matt W. Moore aka “The Vector Funk Master” has come out with his third edition of AlphaFont, an annual collection of vibrant letterform abstractions that celebrates his visual vocabulary and new ideas. You can grab a copy here.

On April 2nd he will be in NYC to speak at the PSFK Conference . You can register here, I believe there are still some spaces available.
