Trespass: A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art

Wooster Collective founders co-author a new book of the most astounding outlaw street art

Books on street art are as common as taggers who think they’re going to be the next Banksy. So when we heard the elusive artist himself wrote the intro to “Trespass,” a book billing itself as a “A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art,” we decided to take a closer look. Co-authored by Marc and Sara Schiller of the street art site Wooster Collective, among their criteria for inclusion was that none of the work be commissioned. Every piece in the new large-format book is an “artist activation”—from mid-’70s gang roll calls in L.A. to the the barge-bridge that Bruce High Quality Foundation floated on NYC’s East River.

Featuring the work of over 150 artists, printed in full-color on matte paper, the focus is decidedly less on traditional graffiti than on public art that generally plays off its environment to make a point. Spanning illicit performances, social movements and protests, as well as several other outdoor interventions, seeing the works of renowned artists, such as Krink, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Vito Acconci, C.R. Stecyk and of course Banksy, suggests the deeper social and cultural implications of the phenomenon.

The 318-page book also devotes ample pages to never-seen before art, including unpublished images, photographs, and photos from Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, and Martha Cooper.

Supplemented by writer and downtown fixture Carlo McCormick‘s essays (who also authored the book), as well an afterward by Creative Time’s director Anne Pasternack and Taschen editor Ethel Seno‘s editorial expertise, “Trespass” has lessons for even the most advanced student of graffiti culture.

Armory Show Selects Gabriel Kuri as Commissioned Artist for 2011 Fair

From left to right, Gabriel Kuri’s “Thank you clouds” (2004) and “Parking Swirl 2″ (2007)

Gabriel Kuri, come on down—you’re the next artist commissioned to create the visual identity for the Armory Show! Mexican-born, Belgium-based Kuri, currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the University of Houston’s Blaffer Art Museum, is best known for his sculptures, collages, and installations of quotidian debris (supermarket receipts, found imagery, slabs of marble, poetically squashed energy drink cans). His work often addresses themes such as consumerism and temporality, as good a description as any for the frenzied environment of the Armory Show, which will run from March 3 – 6 of next year on New York City’s Piers 92 and 94. Kuri will create work for the fair that will be featured in its advertising and marketing materials and will be showcased in the catalogue, which we hope will again be designed by the talented Reed Seifer. The artist will join an impressive list of past commissioned artists, including Karen Kilimnik, John Wesley, Pipilotti Rist, John Waters, and Susan Collis.

Boscolo Hotels Room Service

Take room service home with a menu full of much more than standard fare

exedra-roomservice3.jpg exedra-roomservice4.jpg

Typically unappealing lists of overpriced fare, most room service menus take the idea of an indulgent vacation impulse and translate it into soggy, cold meals. The European Boscolo Hotel Group, however, aims to change the game from dull to delectable with alluring photos and a menu organized in a simple cookbook format.

exedra-roomservice10.jpg

The upshot is more of a culinary keepsake (though pilfering is not explicitly encouraged), offering breakfast, lunch and dinner with vegan options included. Meals span easy to difficult, duly noted in the cooking instructions along with tips, preparation time and necessary ingredients. Bruschetta with Salmon and Shrimps (shown above) takes only eight minutes and is labeled easy despite its decorative display. The straightforward Lasagna alla Bolognese takes 60 minutes to prepare and is surprisingly marked with a medium degree of difficulty.

exedra-roomservice0.jpg exedra-roomservice2.jpg

During a recent stay at the Boscolo property in Rome, Hotel Exedra, I put the menu to the test ordering the Bresaola Beef with Parmesan Cheese. It arrived stacked on a bed of arugula and, while it naturally didn’t look as picture-perfect as in the menu, the quality ingredients and flavor put any such concerns to rest.

A clever example of a hotel chain’s attention to detail, hospitality and marketing, guests who walk away with a Boscolo room service menu leave with a reference guide that will long evoke fond memories while also offering a way to create future gastronomic experiences.
