“in flakes” / street furniture in ARTS TOWADA –

Towada city has snowflakes floating around in winter, cherry blossoms floating around in spring, sunlight sifting down through the trees in summer, leaves floating around autumn, and artworks spreading over the city. There is always something floating around through the city’s clear air.

“in flakes” is made of stainless steel with its surface polished like a mirror. So, it reflects many kinds of things in Towada city.

Oxford Makes ‘LBD’ Official!

imageOxford Dictionary, the purveyor of the English language (seemingly) has been adding new words to the English language as we, the public, make them more and more popular. Both ‘Bling Bling’ and Beyonce’s only regrettable claim to fame, ‘Bootylicious’ have made the cut. As has ‘Chillax’ and, due to the Facebook epidemic, ‘De-friend’ (which is the worst diss ever!). Now, fashion gets to coin a term and it’s a classic. The long-used acronym for the go-to Little Black Dress, or ‘LBD‘ for the word and style savvy, has officially been recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary and as a tribute to this momentous occasion, we’ve decided to showcase our favorite LBD’s! Click on the slideshow to see our affordable and wearable choices ranging from classically sophisticated to edgy chic, so you can nab yourself an LBD and join in on this fashionable addition to the dictionary! Like you really needed an excuse to go shopping …

National Glass Museum Holland by Bureau SLA

National Glass Museum Holland by SLA Bureau

Dutch architects Bureau SLA have connected two houses in Leerdam, Holland, with four overlapping bridges to create a continuous gallery.

The National Glass Museum’s steel-frame bridges are clad in polycarbonate wrapped in aluminium mesh.

Exhibition spaces are spread across both existing buildings and the bridges with 9000 objects on display in glass cabinets by Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek.

Both buildings have been refurbished with one housing a restaurant and the other a library that doubles as staff offices.

Here’s some more from the designers:

The New National Glass Museum in Leerdam

Once the villa on Lingedijk 30 had been acquired, bureau SLA were commissioned to turn the two buildings into a home for the National Glass Museum. It was suggested to turn Cochius’ former residence into an exhibition area and to use the second villa as offices, storage facilities and a cafeteria.

National Glass Museum Holland by SLA Bureau

Whilst this fulfilled functional requirements, it seemed like a missed opportunity to us at bureau SLA, as the new situation would appear to be not very different from the old one. The museum would have more space, indeed, but this would not be visible from the outside.

So what would happen if we made both buildings fully accessible to the public? The museum’s employees could eat in the restaurant, the visitors could have full access to the collection of glass, including that in storage, and the administrative staff could work in the library. Furthermore, the exhibition rooms could be far more spacious. Instead of the small rooms of the existing villas, in which visitors need to climb up and down stairs all the time, circulation and exhibition spaces could to be much more generous.

The four pedestrian bridges that bureau SLA designed draws everything together in an elegant manner. Visitors can idle through extensive rooms; only one lift is needed and an enormous amount of space is gained. The bridges serve as storage space in which all the museum’s objects are on display, in cases specifically designed for the museum by Piet Hein Eek.

In the historical villas not much more needed to be done; they were elegant by themselves. Repairs were carried out where needed, with some later additions removed.

The bridges were constructed from several layers of polycarbonate panels and covered by a translucent skin of grey, powder-coated, aluminium mesh. During the day they contrast sharply with the refined old villas, whereas at night they glow in reflection of the 9000 glass objects inside them.

L’Hydroptère.ch

A new hybrid catamaran with wings from the makers of the world’s fastest sailboat

by Meehna Goldsmith

hydroptere1.jpg hydroptere2.jpg

The brainchild of French yachtsman Alain Thébault, L’Hydroptère is the fastest sailboat on the planet, breaking world sailing records in 2009 for its ability to reach 50.17 knots over one nautical mile a well as 50.17 knots over 500 meters. I recently had the opportunity to check out its extreme power at the unveiling of the Hydroptère.ch—a hybrid catamaran that serves as the prototype for a sailboat that can go around the world in 40 days, a dream Thébault and his team hope to achieve soon.

hydroptere3.jpg

Constructed from carbon and titanium, the boat combines state-of-the art techniques from both the aeronautical and marine industries. A trimaran with foils, the sleek vessel takes its name from the Greek words hydros (water) and ptère (wing). To achieve such a sizzling velocity, l’Hydroptère uses its wings to extract the boat’s hull from the water once it reaches a certain speed, thereby reducing drag.

hydroptere4.jpg hydroptere5.jpg

L’Hydroptère is sponsored by private bank Lombard Odier and Swiss watch label Audemars Piguet—a brand steeped in history yet remains an horology innovator. Recently releasing their first marine watch—the Royal Oak Offshore Diver—Audemars Piguet feels the philosophy of Thébault and his crew perfectly matches their own and will likely create a limited edition timepiece to commemorate l’Hydroptère.

hydroptere6.jpg

March of 2011 will see l’Hydroptere take on the United States’ Transpacific record, sailing from L.A. to Honolulu, Hawaii.
