Designing gestural interaces clearly ain’t easy

pNow that we’re moving beyond the mouse, gestural interface design really is turning into a free-for-all, with no universal language yet beyond tapping to “activate” and swiping to advance./p

pThe latest object seemingly designed to befuddle your parents is the A HREF=”http://www.gesture-remote.com/” Gesture Remote/A from a company called Ident Technology. Though they claim their device “transforms watching television into a magical, intuitive experience,” after watching the demo video, I disagree; because it picks up airborne finger motions in addition to surface touches, I think I’d constantly be activating the wrong thing, particularly when shifting the remote in my hand or setting it down./p

Internationally acclaimed architect Ole Scheeren announces new practice

Ole Scheeren, former Partner along with Rem Koolhaas at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Director of OMA Asia, announces the opening of his architecture studio, Büro Ole Scheeren.

Widely known for leading the groundbreaking design and construction of one of the world’s largest and most iconic buildings, the China Central Television Station (CCTV) and the Television Cultural Centre (TVCC) in Beijing, Scheeren has extensive experience on architectural projects of varying scale in multiple cultures and contexts. His work spans from the Prada epicentre stores in New York and Los Angeles, to the large-scale residential complex of The Interlace in Singapore and the Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taiwan.

Ole Scheeren has established his studio in Beijing and Hong Kong together with long-time collaborator Eric Chang. In addition, he holds the position of Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University. In choosing China as the firm’s headquarters, Büro Ole Scheeren demonstrates its commitment to Asia and the region’s acute significance in the worlds of architecture and design. As part of its international operations, Büro Ole Scheeren is establishing a further base in London.

Scheeren’s new practice will continue to exemplify his ability to work at extreme scales. Current projects range from city-defining structures to small, intimate buildings and include a 250 meter tall tower in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; an 800,000 square meter mixed use project in Chongqing, China; and a studio/gallery building for a Beijing-based artist. Furthermore, the firm has been invited to compete for a 2000 seat theatre near Beijing.

Through its intensely involved, committed, and focused practice, Büro Ole Scheeren is pursuing a rigorous search for new potentials in architecture through which to discover and implement specific, thoughtful, and unexpected solutions. Fusing global experience and general knowledge with precise understanding and appreciation of local conditions, Büro Ole Scheeren applies critical thinking to a process that extends beyond the boundaries of architectural production. It seeks to engage people and cultures, technologies and materials, psychologies and experiences and recognises architecture as a connective and fundamentally social construct.

The Glass House’s Badly Needed Repairs and the Fundraising Efforts to Help Provide Them

0604glasshouse.jpg

Three years ago, Philip Johnson‘s Glass House opened to the public to much fanfare, and between celebrity tours, pop-up shops and high-profile conferences, that enthusiasm has continued. Unfortunately, while the buzz has helped keep the famous architect’s prized series of buildings in the public eye, the passage of time hasn’t been so kind. Bloomberg reports that several of the 13 buildings within the compound are in dire need of repair, in particular the Brick House, which Johnson used when he wanted to escape the transparency of his more iconic all-glass buildings and where “he could feel comfortable with his homosexuality.” That building is suffering from severe mildew and has an ever-worsening foundation problem, which is said to need more than $3 million to repair. That, in addition to all the other needed fixes throughout the compound, adds up to some considerable expenses. In a move to raise money, the National Trust, which oversees the Glass House, as well as the still under repair Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, has asked more than 100 artists, designers and architects to create pieces to have auctioned off at two events, one here in Chicago today and one in New York in early October (you might recall that we had a post up about the great posters made for the events). If you have some extra hundred thousand dollar bills you’re not using and want to put them to a good cause, here’s your chance.

John Pawson: Plain Space at the Design Museum

John Pawson - Plain Space at the Design Museum

British architect John Pawson has sent us these snaps of the model he used when designing the forthcoming exhibition of his work at London’s Design Museum, which opens next week.

John Pawson - Plain Space at the Design Museum

“Through the exhibition the viewer will get an in-depth look at my design process – from sketches and study models right through to a full scale installation,” says Pawson.

John Pawson - Plain Space at the Design Museum

“A series of large-scale photographs explore the relationship between my architecture and the landscape, while actual architectural elements in stone, bronze, wood and metal examine the combination of materials. Films, interviews and personal items from my archive will also be on display including letters from Karl Lagerfeld and the writer Bruce Chatwin.”

Here’s some more information from the Design Museum:

“The father of modern architectural minimalism”
New York Times

The Design Museum presents a major exhibition of the work of British architect John Pawson. Often described as a ‘minimalist’ he is known for a rigorous process of reduction, that creates designs of simplicity, grace and visual clarity. At the heart of the exhibition is a site-specific 1:1, full-sized installation designed by Pawson to offer a direct experience of his work – the first such installation at the museum.

Plain Space celebrates Pawson’s career to date with models, film, photographs and architectural elements and includes some of his most important projects including the Cistercian Monastery of Our Lady of Nový Dvůr in the Czech Republic, the Sackler Crossing at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the Calvin Klein store on Madison Avenue, New York.
