10/10/10: Powers of Ten Day

pThe a href=”http://www.eamesoffice.com/”Eames Office/a has announced that October 10, 2010 marks the tenth annual a href=”http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/powersof10/45841/”Powers of Ten Day/a, in recognition of Charles and Ray Eames’ 1977 a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fKBhvDjuy0″film/a of the same name. The film and the day are all about celebrating the potential in adjusting perspective with scale, viewed from the beautiful natural order of math and science. As a href=”http://www.eamesdemetrios.com/”Eames Demetrios/a, the Eames’ grandson and principal of the Eames Office, says, “There is a little bit of the numerologist in all of us, so we love celebrating this date, but empowering people to explore and make connections between scales is a year-round goal of ours.” /pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/101010_powers_of_ten_day_17405.asp”(more…)/a

BIF6: Reporting from the first day of the Business Innovation Factory’s annual shindig

pimg alt=”wurman.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/wurman.jpg” width=”209″ height=”314″ class=”mt-image-left” style=”float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;” /”What I created, I need to destroy.” Richard Saul Wurman was on fine, curmudgeonly form on the opening day of a href=”http://www.businessinnovationfactory.com/bif-6″BIF6/a. In particular, he seemed indignant that the 18-minute speech format he coined with the a href=”http://www.ted.com”TED conference/a has been so widely replicated around the global conference circuit. “Speakers are practicing!” he said, in outrage. “They know it’s going to be taped and on the fucking television or computer!” This, said one of the world’s most convincing hams, quashes both creativity and sincerity. “When you want me to stop talking, say ‘that’s it’. Be an editor,” he challenged BIF’s organizers, who limit their speakers to a mere 15 minutes. And to his credit, conference founder Saul Kaplan picked up the gauntlet, standing up after Wurman’s time was (well) over and quietly proclaiming “that’s it.” (Wurman, to give him his due, meekly capitulated.)/p

pBIF is a curious conference, held at the Trinity Repertory Theater in Providence, Rhode Island. An acronym for Business Innovation Factory, the nonprofit organization works year-round to create “real world laboratories” in which organizations can “design, prototype, and test new models for delivering value.” Once a year, the team gets to welcome around 300 people to Providence, home of Brown and RISD and a city that’s a mix of swanky and seedy. The two day event, now in its sixth year, features heavy-hitters from myriad disparate fields, from corporate innovation departments to leftfield creatives, who all eschew the traditional Powerpoint dek in favor of giving a more personal insight into their lives and worlds. /p

Using Japanese swordmaking techniques to create metal with “wood grain”

pimg alt=”0jbinnion.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0jbinnion.jpg” width=”468″ height=”714″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pAsk your fiancee if she’d like her wedding ring to be made using a Samurai swordmaking technique, and you’ll probably get a resounding “No;” you might as well ask her if she’d like the ceremony to be performed by ninjas. But metalworker A HREF=”http://mokume-gane.com/index.php?page=jim_and_the_team” James Binnion/A has researched a rather unusual metalworking technique used by Japanese swordcrafters, and adapted it to make very unique jewelry./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/using_japanese_swordmaking_techniques_to_create_metal_with_wood_grain_17403.asp”(more…)/a

Designing gestural interfaces clearly ain’t easy

pimg alt=”0gestremot.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0gestremot.jpg” width=”468″ height=”573″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pNow that we’re moving beyond the mouse, gestural interface design really is turning into a free-for-all, with no universal language yet beyond tapping to “activate” and swiping to advance./p

pThe latest object seemingly designed to befuddle your parents is the A HREF=”http://www.gesture-remote.com/” Gesture Remote/A from a company called Ident Technology. Though they claim their device “transforms watching television into a magical, intuitive experience,” after watching the demo video, I disagree; because it picks up airborne finger motions in addition to surface touches, I think I’d constantly be activating the wrong thing, particularly when shifting the remote in my hand or setting it down./p
