A 21 Piano Salute to Celebrate a Summer of Music

pIt has been a noisy summer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where twenty-one pianos have sat in plazas, parks, and on sidewalks for anyone to play. The pianos have been used to promote a href=”http://www.keysforthecity.com/index.html”Key’s for the City/a, a campaign launched by a href=”http://www.musicforeveryone.net/”Music for Everyone/a “to foster creativity and a sense of community among the general public and to raise awareness for local music and visual arts education initiatives.” /p

pemMusic for Everyone/em partnered with numerous civic organizations on this project, and some like-minded nonprofits, including a href=”http://www.societyofdesign.org/”Society of Design/a (SOD), an offshoot of the graphic design studio a href=”http://www.gowelsh.com/”Go Welsh/a. SOD elevated the impact of this initiative by recruiting designers, artists, and volunteers to reinvent the appearance of these old, donated pianos. Some were painted bright colors, some became photographic collages, and others were opened up to expose the guts of the instrument. Each piano has a surprisingly distinctive look that attract a broad range of curious pedestrians and city-dwellers who take turns on the pianos. Kids bang out cacophonous notes, adults work through songs they learned as kids, and many skilled pianists filled the streets with nostalgic melodies. /p

juicepack4-1.jpg

Mophie’s Juice Pack Air delivers a full supply of extended power to the iPhone 4 with a rechargeable battery housed within a super-thin external case. As fans of the Mophie since its debut, we’re pleased to see that the latest version mimics the iPhone 4’s design, with a silver band wrapping around the soft rubber case.

The pack doubles the amount of talk time or provides 36 extra hours of audio playback—a handy feature since the case also serves as a virtual speaker box, reverberating the sound from the bottom of the phone to the front for full sound.

The Juice Pack Air hits shelves today, selling in stores and online for $80.

Brion Gysin and Bran Muffins! City Bakery Opens Outpost at New Museum

(Photos: New Museum)

Do you like savory tartines with your Rivane Neuenschwander? Want to follow a trippy trial of Brion Gysin‘s “Dreamachine” sculpture with a glass of pseudosangria? (Hell, yes!) Good news, hungry art lovers, because the New Museum has just opened Birdbath, a café created by New York’s famed City Bakery and designed by Brooklyn-based furniture company Uhuru. Located on the museum’s ground floor (which is free to visit), Birdbath will offer a seasonal range of sweet and savory snacks made from locally grown, organic ingredients. The inaugural menu features maple-bacon biscuits, rice milk muffins, smoked chicken paninis, and the scrumptious-sounding “pressed chocolate sandwich with preserves.” Everything is prepared at City Bakery HQ and delivered to the New Museum by bicycle-driven cargo rickshaw, which only sounds like a short film we once saw exhibited at the museum.

The eco-friendliness of the new café (25% off if you come by bike or skateboard) is also reflected in Uhuru’s custom furnishings: chunky stools made from scraps of hardwood collected from local wood shops and communal tables crafted from recycled steel and aluminum and finished with a zero-VOC powder coat. As an alternative to perching on the stools (which are discreetly embedded with the distinctive stacked shape of the museum’s SANAA-designed building), customers can munch ricotta-caramel tartines and sip fair trade tea in Arper “leaf” chairs, selected because of the Italian manufacturer’s commitment to minimize environmental impact at every stage of production. Meanwhile, Birdbath’s goodie-laden countertop only looks like marble. It’s actually durable IceStone, made in Brooklyn entirely of recycled glass and cement. Look for more Birdbaths to spring up in Manhattan later this year, as the City Bakery expands it green bakery brand to Tribeca and the East Village.

Daily Obsesh – Saddle Flap Wallet

imageFall has made its presence known (has anyone else noticed the drop in temperature?) and now is the perfect time to vamp up your wardrobe. New seasons means new accessories in my book! A great little pick-me-up for the transition into cooler weather is a cute wallet. What’s great about a cute new wallet is you get to use it every single day and show off your good taste everywhere you shop! BDG‘s Saddle Flap Checkbook Wallet is a great choice for any gal. This wallet has zipper compartments for loose change, snap closures to hold receipts and coupons, and of course plenty of room for cash and your checks! Show off your impeccable taste with your choice of four colors (tan is my fave!). You’ll also love the cute design on the front flap of this wallet; it’s a great classic piece that pays homage to equestrian fashion! Keep it classy, keep it simple, keep it cute. Yeehaw!

Channeling Lauren Hutton in Halston Heritage

imageBrought to you by our friends from What2WearWhere.com!

We are in love with Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week’s new locale in Lincoln Center. So much so the excitement conjures up another hey-day in the city that never sleeps – Studio 54, dahling! Similar to NYFW, it was the place to see and be seen, where the society, the arts and fashion came together to create this dazzling and exciting epoch. With disco on the brain, the iconic 1970€™s designer Halston comes to mind, worn by his gals, Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger and Anjelica Huston- whom all referred to him as ‘Ash’ (how the French pronounce the letter €œH€). Today, Marios Schwab has taken over the label and launched Halston Heritage, a collection that features reproductions of archival Halston pieces. Schwab designed the collection to €œecho the heritage but with a very distinctive, modern feel that is completely new and completely now.” This description totally applies to none-other than Halston€™s iconic muse and €œit€ girl Lauren Hutton. Hutton is known for her adventurous spirit, having wrestled alligators, traversed the Arctic in a dog sled and spent time with African tribesman and is still going strong. She continues to empower women of all ages today and is still working as an actress and model. According to Hutton, €œWe have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life. They are what we have been through and who we want to be.€ The Halston Heritage collection mimics such modernity making it the perfect fit for ladies of any age. We decided to channel disco’s glory days and picked quite the contemporary look right from the Halston Heritage RTW collection, so you to can love the nightlife and get your boggie oggie-oggie on.

To see more looks from the Halston Heritage line, check it out at Bergdorf Goodman.

Here’s some more information from the designers:

Sticks and Stones and Broken Bones – Toogood × izé

izé and Toogood are launching a new collection of hardware, Sticks and Stones and Broken Bones at the Super Natural project at the Garage, SW3 on 17th September 2010.

An extraordinary collection of products cast from found objects, Toogood’s Sticks and Stones and Broken Bones becomes a kind of Wunderkammer in itself, a series of handles and hooks which translate the organic and the geological into crafted, cast metal. In an attempt to bring some of the tactile textures of the natural world to the usually geometric realm of hardware, designer Faye Toogood has created a range of visually arresting products covering all hardware applications from door and cabinet handles to coat hooks. Using her own collection the idea is that the products can be mixed and matched, each imparting to the architecture a sense of the foraged and the found.
