Anti Design Festival opens

The Anti Design Festival, Neville Brody’s outsider/insider, complimentary/ contradictory contribution to the London Design Festival opens tonight

After all the debate, derisory comments and national press coverage we’re still not entirely sure what to expect from the Anti Design Festival which launches in London tonight. Despite its ‘outsider’ status, it’s very much part of the LDF programme, its ‘rebel’ stance sponsored by a property developer and the National Lottery, as The Observer tartly pointed out.

It has an ‘open’ programme but is also curated, is anti-establishment yet of the establishment (contributors include Stefan Sagmeister, LCC’s Sarah Temple and new D&AD President Simon Sankarayya, Brody is now on the D&AD executive committee, up for the Prince Philip Designers Prize and about to take up his role at the RCA), is ‘anti’ design yet all about design.

Perhaps the most generous way to view it is as one of those events whose contribution and value only comes into focus once it has happened. A lot of commenters here and elsewhere have leaped to dismiss it before it has even begun, but anything that seeks to foster debate and that may create the conditions for new ideas to breed is worth giving a chance in our book.

Here’s an (incomplete) rundown of the ten days of events in ten different venues across East London that make up the ADF. More on its website here.

Microplex – short film season

Radlab
Londonewcastle Project Space, 28 Redchurch St E2, until September 26
The main daytime event space for the ADF which will feature a mix of talks, live events and ‘happenings’. On Friday September 24 it will host a day-long series of round-table talks curated by Brody and Adrian Shaughnessy while there will also be shows from students of the LCC and RCA. Things kick off with Mistakes and Manifestos, curated by Daniel Charny of the RCA, which is described as ‘an open programme of selected exhibits and some scheduled events’. Among these will be performance artist Giles Ripley’s self-help film I’m a Winner (Why Aren’t You!!!) (still shown above) and a manifesto wall, Open Spike, by designer Martino Gamper, which will ‘accumulatively display both commissioned and open submission manifestos’. Tomorrow (Saturday 18) sees a talk by ‘anti designer’ (whatever that is) Jerszy Seymour, whose Workshop Chair is shown, top.

Brody’s Research Studios is running its own event on the final day, Anarchy / Apathy: ‘Are we anarchic? Are we apathetic? What do either of these states mean to us? Research Studios will be exploring the relevance of Anarchy and Apathy in everyday life, through real-time interactive information processing. The space will feature visual outputs, alongside other designers and image makers’ explorations of the subject’.

Salon
Londonewcastle Project Space, 28 Redchurch St E2, until September 26
The ‘Salon space’ will host free evening performances of ‘experimental music, sound, moving image, spoken word, performance and digital practice by some of the most exciting artists working in the UK and beyond’.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Lands Rebuilding Project at University of Iowa

0627iowawaterarch.jpg

While New Yorkers are still angry at Pelli Clarke Pelli for their plans for the Empire State Building-blocking 15 Penn Plaza tower in that city, they have far more fans at the moment out here in the midwest. Two years after the flood that swept through the University of Iowa campus, damaging many of its river-adjacent art buildings, it’s just been announced that the firm has landed a project to design a replacement Hancher Auditorium. The original performance art building was severely damaged during the flooding and apparently not suffering the same rebuilding FEMA hurdles that Steven Holl‘s Art Building West has. Here are the early details of Pelli’s new Hancher, which it landed over 59 other firms who were also vying:

The new building will overlook the Iowa River from atop a hill on the main route into Iowa City. Just north of the original 1972 Max Abramovitz building, the site is adjacent to the Levitt Center, a campus landmark. The design will draw from the site’s natural surroundings and sustainability will be a priority.

The new 144,770-gross-square-foot building will include a proscenium theater and spaces for rehearsals and teaching. Construction of the building, which will be partially funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is expected to begin in spring 2012.

Recession Chic – Lust Worthy Faux Leather Bags $60 Or Less!

imageI find myself procrastinating at work these days by trolling all my favorite online shopping sites, looking at handbags. A random sampling of conversations I have had with my fashionista friends leads me to believe that I am not alone in this recent bag lusting activity. Maybe something about the end of summer and looming cold months makes us girls yearn for an update (or three!) in our handbag collection? Luckily, I’ve been finding that many of the bags I am lusting over won’t break the bank, even if I splurge on a few of them. I’ve discovered that there are some great faux leather bags out there, that have such cute silhouettes and detailing, it’s easy to forget that the material isn’t real leather. Faux leather bags are more durable, and (of course) more animal friendly than their real leather counterparts. What’s more, it’s easier to try out current trends with a handbag that isn’t a financial investment. You can give that leopard print or bright red a try and if it doesn’t work … c’est la vie. I’ve put my wicked skills in procrastinating to use, and have complied some of my favorite faux- leather finds into a slideshow for your viewing pleasure. Click the slideshow and find your fave!
