We were just browsing through some of the coverage of the just-wrapped Fashion Week when something caught our eye, though not having anything to do with clothes at all. The label Marchesa showed their new collection on Wednesday and as we were reading about it and taking a look at the dresses, we noticed where the show was being held: the Chelsea Art Museum. Wait a minute. Didn’t that shut down (at least temporarily) in the middle of August? Checking their site, yep, they’ve announced that they plan to remain closed until mid-October, after they’ve “engaged a restructuring process” and performed “some retooling not just to stay healthy but to thrive.” So while they’re doing all of this restructuring and retooling, it looks like they decided to make a few extra bucks along the way and open as a temporary fashion venue. Granted, the check they received likely won’t cover the $13 million they owe their creditors, but it’s possibly a good sign that at least they’re thinking of any revenue generators they can grab. Forget seeing anything of the museum, as it’s all curtains and clothes, but for a look at Marchesa’s new spring line debuted at the Chelsea, here’s a good slideshow.

London Design Festival 2010: London designer Charlotte Kingsnorth will present a collection of fat chairs at Designersblock in London next week.
Called Hybreed, the project involves creating one-off pieces by upholstering reclaimed chair frames with bulging upholstery. The alterations are meant to represent the rolls of flesh on each chair’s obese owner.
The series is a development of Kingsnorth’s graduation project from 2009, entitled At One. Designersblock takes place 23-26 September as part of the London Design Festival.

Charlotte Kingsnorth at London Design Festival 2010
A crossbreed of furniture evolved from the concept of the relationship between a sofa and the voluptuous flesh of its obese occupier. Kingsnorth, the metamporph, picks reclaimed chairs and transforms them into different curvaceous characters and forms depending on the frames they envelop. Thus, each chair is unique, a one-off.

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Apostrophe Lover’s transformed desk into a baby changing and storage station:
Apostrophe Lover explained the redesign in the comments to the photographs:
It’s actually a repurposed computer desk. I’m a working, first-time parent (as is my spouse), and I wanted to have everything organized and accessible for those bleary-eyed baby changings. The trash can (the step function is essential) sits where the computer once did.
When closed, the baby station just looks like an armoire. The baby’s laundry basket is just to the right (soiled items can be tossed in even when the station is open).
On the inside of the right door is a hanging organizer “For those extra things that don’t get used every day, but that need to be nearby: nasal aspirator, cotton swabs, corn starch, Desitin, and nail clippers.”

Pensando a loro mi vengono in mente i film poliziotteschi con le loro sparatorie, belle squinzie e soprattutto le Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Il loro rivisitare le colonne sonore di quei film li ha resi ancor più fantastici ai miei occhi, perchè? Perchè hanno un gusto,una carica, uno stile che emerge soprattutto quando riempiono alcuni pezzi con quel suono rock-blues che tanto mi piace, ascoltate la rivisitazione di ‘Milano odia: la polizia non può sparare’ per comprendere per bene le mie parole. Conoscendo però la classe di E.Gabrielli & co. sapevo che non si sarebbero fermati a rivisitare, infatti in questo nuovo lavoro hanno messo insieme composizioni originali (otto su tredici pezzi) che spaziano dalla psichedelia ad una matrice jazz-blues in certe chitarre e piombando poi verso il funky. Li sponsorizzo perchè italiani, miei concittadini e soprattutto perchè i ragazzi ci stanno dentro, assai. Nota di fondo finale: vi informo che il chitarrista della band Massimo Martellotta ha vinto il premio InSound come miglior chitarrista dell’anno in corso. VIDEO |
 | Forgiveness rock recordBroken Social Scene Questo è un collettivo di spessore, questo è un disco del quale non potete fregarvene, questo è l’indie rock contemporaneo più a fuoco che si possa trovare in circolazione. Il disco è di facile lettura, si passa da pezzoni indie rock ad altri di stampo pop sognante fino a un certo suono sperimentale che vede arrivare all’orizzonte elettronica e fiati. La band è guidata e capitanata dalla combo Kevin Drew/Brendan Canning e qui siamo in buone mani, ci troviamo di fronte una di quelle band che ha realmete ‘qualcosa da dire’, per arrivare al nocciolo della questione dovrebbe bastarvi l’ascolto di ‘world sick‘ che primo è un piacere ascoltare e riascoltare secondo vi fa guadagnare tempo facendovi tralasciare quelle band che vengono etichettate come ‘new sensation’ o roba simile. Arrivano anche loro dal Canada…strano eh? Non è che ho un debole per la scena musicale di quella nazione che ha in Toronto e Montreal gli scenari principali, è che nell’underground canadese gira roba tagliata bene. VIDEO |
 | Before todayAriel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti Non so come iniziare a commentare questo artista e questo suo album, se non con uno ‘SPACCA!’. Ariel Pink, se vogliamo collocarlo in un certo settore indiepop, è una specie di ‘crack’ che con ‘Before today’ ha spiccato il salto verso le grandi folle scremando dai suoi pezzi quel suono lo-fi troppo invadente che talvolta lasciava un po’ dubbiosi in merito a quello che sarebbe arrivato poi. Ora è arrivato un disco che, personalmente, mi gasa un casino e che ha anche dei rimandi divertenti nei testi, si passa dai tastieroni di ‘Round & Round’ a quel post punk ‘80 che emerge in tutto il suo rumore chitarristico in ‘Butt-house Blondies’. Ascolterei questo pezzo all’infinito e dovrebbe bastarvi quell’attacco di elettrica che lo introduce per mandarvi ai pazzi nella vostra cameretta inscenando un improbabile solo di ‘air guitar’. D’ora in poi dal fantasy-psych di ariel pink mi aspetto quelle virate-pazzia che tanto fanno sbrodolare. E comunque ti avviso Ariel Pink: non bussare mai alla mia porta!
