Frank Lloyd Wrights Communism Defense Letter Goes Up for Auction

0602wriaucletter.jpg

If we were multi-millionaires (we say “if” so as to appear modest), the auctions we would be attending would be like the upcoming one at the the Bay Area’s San Rafael Auction Gallery this Saturday. We’d be there bidding on a letter penned by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957 to a member of the Marin County board of supervisors, defending himself after being accused of communist sympathies. Wright had been put in the position after accusations were made by members of a local chapter of the American Legion, following the architect landing the commission to build the famous Marin County Civic Center (which, if you’re not already familiar, you’d recognize parts of if you’ve seen THX-1138). The Contra Costa Times reports that the letter has been put up for auction by a member of the family related to Walter Castro, the board member to whom Wright sent his defense. And it’s a great, angry letter, written by a man well known for having a bit of a temper. Here’s a bit:

“I swear I have never known an American Communist nor did I ever attend one of their meetings – – and do not know one now. Any use they could make of my name would be only because I was well known as an independent American liberal…Well, I recite these facts because I have known the uniquity of these cowardly assassinations a la the McCarthy as out public enemy number one. I fought McCarthyism openly and hoped the ism died with him. Evidently there is enough left for the ‘common-man’ to use to get whatever he imagines is to his advantage…”

The entire transcript of the letter is available here. The auction will begin Saturday morning, 10am PST, and online bidding is an option. The letter is expected to fetch somewhere between $3000 and $5000, and, of course, both this writer and Stephanie have annual birthdays. And aren’t those gift-giving holidays only a few months around the corner? Just saying is all.

Willy Verginer

Label Love: Take On The Tropics With MIKOH Swimwear

imageHave you been sitting at your desk, fantasizing about your next beachy getaway? MIKOH Swimwear founders Kalani and Oleema Miller know exactly what that’s like, and have even found most of their inspiration in their daydreams of vacations past (and future!). Their latest collection draws from their favorite tropical places to visit — Bali, Fiji, Australia, and even California — and the sisters-turned-design-partners seek to create the perfect swimsuit, not only for your body, but for enjoying a vacay to its fullest! Their flattering yet innovative cuts involve geometric cut-outs, twisted details, and plenty of flirty “cheekiness,” while the color palette is reminiscent of warm sandy beaches, crystal-blue waters, coral reefs, and volcanic landscapes. MIKOH is all about making one’s fashionable mark on the world, and what better opportunity to do that than a tropical vacation with the perfect suit? Take a look at the slideshow for a peek at their latest collection!

Built to Resi(s)t

QuinzeMilanEastpak1.jpg

As backpacks continue to trend as popular accessories this season, the classic brand Eastpak is carving an entirely new path for itself. Its latest collaboration with avant-garde furniture label Quinze & Milan is a collection of rather sporty furniture pieces appealing more to the desire to sit still rather than hike a mountain.

QuinzeMilanEastpak2.jpg QuinzeMilanEastpak3.jpg

The special-edition, Built to Resi(s)t Collection, unveiled earlier this year at Milan’s furniture fair consists of a series of lightweight multi-pocketed furniture units that hold books, magazines, remote controls, laptops—anything—in their variously-sized pouches. While Eastpak’s no stranger to joint projects with other designers and brands, this marks the company’s first cross-disciplinary partnership to produce a product beyond shoulder-slingers.

Though the collection isn’t available for sale yet, the first models off the production line will be the “Club Sofa 01” and the “Primary Pouf 2,” a love seat and an ottoman respectively, fashioned in the form of classic Quinze & Milan designs. They’ll feature an assortment of different colors and prints, as well as fabrics—from Eastpak’s classic textured nylon to a shinier leather-like material.

Quinze & Milan, a Belgian company, is known for its boundary-pushing approach to design based on challenging consumers to look at furniture as atmospheric components rather than a solitary objects. This collection certainly meets those expectations—both in design and by redefining our expectations of iconic brands and their products.

AIGA Survey: Downturn in Design Employment More Selective Than Sweeping

salary_survey.bmpThe results of the 2010 AIGA|Aquent Survey of Design Salaries are in, and while the design profession has been hit hard by the economic slowdown—well, things could be worse. The downturn in design employment, while substantial, has been “more selective than sweeping,” notes AIGA executive director Richard Grefé in his introduction to the survey report, released last week. In 2009, corporate design and advertising were most vulnerable to the enduring economic gloom, while business at many independent studios remained “active,” although not strong enough to warrant much hiring. Recent graduates have therefore struggled, making do with low-paying or unpaid internships, while many freelancers find themselves in quasi-permanent positions that offer little security and even fewer benefits.

“What we have heard from design-studio heads is that they are working harder, but margins are smaller,” explained Grefé. “Hence, the productivity gains that individual employees are contributing are not being rewarded because clients (internal or external) may not be paying for those gains.” So what’s the good news? Designers’ salaries rose slightly in 2009, ending a decade of only modest inflation-paced gains. Meanwhile, leading designers are confident that the design economy has hit bottom and will be recovering over the coming months. In the second half of 2009, the AIGA Design Leaders Confidence Index held at 98, up from 51 in October 2008 and consistent with designers’ attitudes between 2005 and 2007.
