Hamburger Automatenverlag Book Vending Machines

In an effort to both reuse retired cigarette vending machines and encourage literacy (not to mention sell a few books), newly-minted German publisher Hamburger Automatenverlag recently introduced a resourceful new concept—the book vending machine. Basing their name on the concept, the publishing house’s clever street project supplants one unhealthy habit with a positive one through the re-purposing of existing resources.

The machines vary in size and are currently scattered throughout the University of Hamburg and its surrounding neighborhood. A mere €4 fee secures your pick from a rotating assortment of small-format novels, photo books, graphic novels and collections of poetry—all by local authors.

From pizza and ramen to seed bombs and even sneakers, this decade has seen a lot of unlikely objects coming out of vending machines.

LG’s “Design the Future” design competition winners

pLG has announced the winners of their 3rd Annual Design the Future Competition, which asked entrants to “define the future of mobile communication” via a design for a cell phone. Oddly, the press release does not include images of the winning design (done by Virginia Tech ID students Zack Filbert, Chris Carpenter, James Connors, and Kees Luyendijk) but does include runners up: /p

Designer Defends Controversial World Cup Ball, Offers to Give Lessons

It’s difficult for we Americans to capitalize on anything related to the World Cup, given that we don’t even call the sport involved with it by the right name. So we were sad, seeing that we weren’t going to be able to cash in on any of that lucrative football/soccer traffic. But now the sport has fortunately provided a gift to us with a design controversy about the very basic fundamental of the whole game: the ball. Designed and released by Adidas, the official World Cup ball, called Jabulani, has been leaving player livid over the past couple of weeks, most recently with goalkeeper David James who called the ball’s design “dreadful,” joining the chorus of complaints that the ball moves irregularly in the air and is much faster than those they’re used to. In response, one of the lead designers behind it, Dr. Andy Harland, has publicly come out to say that he’s willing to talk to teams, to give them a quick lesson on how to use it properly, and how everyone will eventually grow used to the ball and come to love it (so much for an emphasis on function, we playfully jest). Harland has even issued a thinly veiled warning, that those who do take him up on his offer will have a slight edge on the competition.

For those times when waiting a couple hours to make traditional ice pops in your freezer is just a ridiculous request, there is the Zoku Quick Pop Maker:

This appliance makes three (yes, THREE!) pops at a time in less than 10 minutes, and it costs $50. Like most newer model ice cream makers, the shell of the Zoku Quick-Pop Maker has to live in your freezer until you’re ready to use it, otherwise it takes more than two hours to freeze the shell first. In the end, it might take you more time to use this device (if the shell isn’t already frozen), about $40 more, takes up a good chunk of storage space, and makes considerably fewer ice pops than traditional methods. Maybe there are ice pop emergencies I’m not aware of that this device is perfect for solving? Or … maybe not.
