Keys to the city

One to one, one at a time, all of the time, thousands of keys will be bestowed by thousands of people on thousands of citizens for thousands of reasons that deserve to be recognized. Keys to cities are traditionally given by a mayor to a hero or dignitary, symbolizing that they can have free entrance to the city. This new Key to the City belongs to us, and is awarded among ourselves. We will give each other the key to our city for private reasons that exist outside of history. Instead of being acknowledged for landing a plane in a river, we are awarded the key for perfect attendance in school. Instead of receiving an honor for winning the World Series, we receive the key because of the kindness we showed at the hospital. And with this new key, we gain an opportunity to step back and reflect on common space in the city. For not only does the key open up specific sites, but it can also make us aware that the city is a series of spaces that are locked or unlocked.

Space-saving pop-up furniture

Dwell magazine recently published a fascinating piece on a new trend in pop-up furniture. “Pop-Up Schmop-Up” highlights mostly space-saving furniture for public spaces, but it starts with the Armin Wagner cardboard Pop Up Desk for homes and offices:

Next up is Rogier Martens’ POP-UP 2010 public benches:

My favorite item not pictured in the article, but certainly mentioned, is the Urilift public restroom. It’s a public restroom that raises and lowers out of the ground at certain times of the day. There is a not-so-safe-for-work but amazing marketing video showing exactly how the toilet operates. These pop-up restrooms would be perfect in D.C. where our public spaces have so many different uses over the course of the year — festivals, protests, inaugurations, parades, sports fields, sunbathing, tourist walkways, etc.

Check out the full article for even more amazing pop-up furniture products. These products all remind me of Gary Chang’s Incredibly Efficient Efficiency, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of these kinds of space-saving designs. I love to see designers thinking outside the box — literally, in the case of Wagner’s Pop Up Desk.

W+K releases new Honda spot

Wieden + Kennedy London has released a striking new ad for the launch of the Honda CR-Z car in Europe, directed by Frank Budgen…

The ad is shot in an arty, RGB style, giving it an unusual and distinctive look, particularly in the car sector. The RGB theme also links to strategy, with each colour supposedly relating to a different driving mode in the car – red being ‘sport’, blue ‘normal’ and green ‘econ’. I had to refer to the press release to figure this meaning out, though apparently the RBG colours also appear in the dashboard lighting of the car, changing with each driving mode.

“The thing about this hybrid is that it’s fantastic to drive,” says Sam Heath, creative director at W+K. “You can choose to engage with the road and the world around you in three distinct ways. That’s essentially what the film’s all about.”

Thermal Mapping

HybridgeJacket1.jpg Hybridge_Hood1.jpg

An industry-first technology created by Canada Goose, thermal mapping uses strategically-placed premium duck down to insulate the family-run label’s forthcoming HyBridge line. Tailored for men’s and women’s unique needs, the approach makes for sleek silhouettes with optimal warmth and flexibility thanks to its soft-shell construction.

Treated nylon fabric wicks away moisture, while an adjustable hem and fleece-lined cuffs help guard against the chill. An internal pocket for mp3 players makes it an ideal jacket for biking or running.

HyBridge with thermal mapping hits stores August 2010.

Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players

leon-couple.jpg leon-butt.jpg

Receiving due credit for his talent in a medium he mostly considered a hobby, the impressive oeuvre left behind by Leon Levinstein is on display in career retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein’s New York Photographs, 1950–1980” features 45 rarely-before-seen photos of New York City life shot by the solemn photographer.

Spanning Coney Island to the Lower East Side, fur coats to paper-bag hats and couples in love to strangers in arguments, Levinstein’s intriguing collection of subtle gestures and compelling subjects, all in black and white, demonstrates his discomfort interacting with society despite his sincere interest in it.

Rather than working by assignment like his more well-known contemporaries—such as Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, or Garry Winogrand—Levinstein instead chose to work full-time in advertising, pursuing photography only in his spare time.

With the exception of one solo exhibition at Helen Gee’s Limelight Gallery in 1956, and several group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, Levinstein never received much fame in his lifetime. He passed away in 1988 without a family or many close friends, his work known and appreciated almost exclusively by other photographers or specialists.

Fans of Levinstein’s work hope that the Met exhibition will help bring his work some of the appreciation and fame that it has long deserved. The show runs through 17 October 2010.
