Quote of Note | Simon Doonan

S-Doonan.jpg
“Young people today might be bright and ambitious but they would not know a Renaissance codpiece if it slapped them upside the head. If you are cruising Zappos all day, then you are unlikely to stumble upon any mind-expanding sites about the glories and eccentricities of 16th-century male costume.”

Bicycle Film Festival 2010

Wheeling its way from Austin to Zurich this year, the Bicycle Film Festival enters a decade of bringing films, music and art to bike enthusiasts around the world.

Marco Mucig, BFF art director, directed this year’s festival trailer again. With visual effects by David Lucas Vivaldini, dexterous cyclists ride and stunt in a pyrotechnic celebration—some bikes rigged with fireworks—culminating in a daredevil leap through a ring-of-fire. Neo-disco Italian group Scuola Furano provides the whimsical soundtrack.

BFF starts up in NYC with the accompanying annual gallery show “Joyride” on 17 June 2010 (a must-see, this year’s line-up includes Agathe Snow, Albert Maysles, David Ellis, Leo Fitzpatrick, Taliah Lempert, Tim Barber, and WK Interact) and the films begin 18-20 June 2010, with a world premier of “Empire.” Hit up its website for showtimes, ticket information and other dates.

Jewnion Label

jewnion-1.jpg jewnion-2.jpg

The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Joshua and Stacey Abarbanel, Jewnion Label is a witty take on vintage union label design coupled with a love of Jewish culture.

Joshua (a fine artist who honed his handyman skills as a teen doing apartment maintenance) was laughing with his wife over the notion of Jewish handymen—a group so uncommon they decided it needed its own union. The duo developed the concept, creating slogans such as “Rare are those who are able” and “Repairing the world one lightbulb at a time,” a reference to the Jewish imperative tikkun olam, meaning “to heal the world.”

jewnion-5.jpg jewnion-6.jpg

Applying the slogans to a line of shirts, hats, sweatshirts and more, Jewnion Label now offers a full range of cheeky logos such as Amalgamated Menschen International, International Federation of Shofar Blowers, and Allied Matzo Ball Makers League.

jewnion-3.jpg jewnion-4.jpg

Stacey tells CH, “We’re trying to hit a sweet spot between giving people a laugh or a smile and engendering a sense of pride by taking classic notions and stereotypes about Jewish culture and putting a clever, positive spin on them.”

Not Basel Bound? Live Vicariously Through New Design Miami Blog

DMB_logo.jpgBasel, Switzerland will be the place to be next week, when the middle-aged megafair Art Basel and its ten-year-old cousin, Design Miami/Basel, offer up the fresh work of thousands of artists and designers on the banks of the Rhine. While we were on the ground at last December’s elegantly Maarten Baas-ified incarnation of Design Miami, we’re still waiting to hear if anyone has room on their Boeing Business Jet for an UnBeige stowaway (we travel light!). Whether you’re bound for Basel or not, you’ll want to check in regularly with the newly launched Design Miami/Basel Blog, which promises
a steady stream of quotes, photos, facts, and news from the show floor. And there’s lots to look forward to, with Design Miami co-founder Craig Robins promising “the most robust show we’ve produced in our history—in terms of scope, programming, and innovation.” We hear that architect Mia Hagg has collaborated with MadeThought, the design consultancy behind the fair’s consistently fantastic visual identity, to design the exhibition space, which this year will occupy two floors of Hall 5 in Basel’s Messeplatz. One not to be missed event? Tuesday’s kickoff session of the fair’s Design Talks, featuring the FT‘s Edwin Heathcote in conversation with none other than Zaha Hadid.

Clients compete for free design services instead of the other way around

pimg alt=”L+B.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/L%2BB.jpg” width=”468″ height=”311″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pLarimer + Bernheim, a design partnership based in the Bay Area, have turned the design competition on its head with ema href=”http://www.freeisacompetition.com/”FREE/a/em. The competition invites would-be clients to compete for free design services in exchange for submitting the most compelling project. The goal is to “inspire people to consider areas of their life, work, and play that could benefit from a thoughtful design.”/p

pWe love this. It not only acknowledges the importance of a good client-designer relationship, but also opens the door to clients of all kinds, from individuals to small businesses, that might not have considered ever going to a designer before.br /
In a time of economic hardship, Larimer and Bernheim are helping others while generating work to keep themselves busy and strengthen their practice. We hope more firms will start doing this and can’t wait to see the results./p

pFrom Peter Bernheim, one half of L+B:br /
blockquote”Tough times make it easy to be complacent and take work when and where it comes; as a partnership, we are committed to the act of making and bringing well-crafted objects into this world. In our work, we value relationships – with people, places, and materials. For us, a project is the building and nurturing of these understandings and FREE represents an opportunity to share these values.”/blockquote/p

This Just Inbox: Firefly at the Shanghai World Expo

pDesigned by French designers a href=”http://www.kkristen.com/”Kkristen/a and a href=”http://www.vincentmoreau.fr/”Vincent Moreau/a, a href=”http://www.kkristen.com/en/firefly-shanghai2010/”Firefly/a is an interactive installation on view at the Shanghai World Expo. A multi-colored projection on the ground reacts to human behavior like a swarm of glowing insects:/p

blockquoteThese ones change their appearance in human presence : they wriggle, light up and scatter in response to the motion of visitors around. The cloud alternately disperses and merges… and its shape evolves to take a different appearance, again and again. Firefly is an invitation to play, in search of a sensitive interaction between man and his environment./blockquote

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/06/firefly-0.jpg” width=”468″ height=”311″ alt=”firefly-0.jpg”//div

pThough interactive light installations can often be pretty lackluster despite the technology behind them, we appreciate the directness and appeal of this one. It’s beautiful, easy to understand and react to, and does what it set out to do: encourage play. It’s evident that the two kids in the video above are completely captivated (like cats and a laser pointer)./p

Recession Chic: 10 Hot Swimsuits Under $50!

imageThe good thing about procrastination, when it comes to stocking up on swimwear that is, is that you get the chance to get a feel for what’s out there before you decide… and you get to take advantage of some serious discounts! Sure, sometimes all the good styles are already picked through, or worse, sold out (gasp!), but if you have a good eye and some hardcore shopping talent, you can still cash in on a great bargain and a hot bikini for the season ahead. That’s where I come in! I’ve rounded up a selection of cute suits that would be worth the splurge if they weren’t already a ridiculously good deal! At these prices, you could even afford to buy more than one to round out your collection before the weather gets hot enough to make you want to jump in the pool with your clothes on. Don’t believe me? Check out the slideshow for my 10 favorite swimsuit picks — bikinis and one-pieces alike — all under $50!
