Tease

Preeminent advertising firm Wieden & Kennedy‘s “studio” recently released a new line of t-shirts, Moleskine notebooks, onesies and tote bags with an indie bent. The simple illustrations gracing the American Apparel tees span the quirky—Bear On Bike or Beardo—to neo-inspirational messages such as “The Work Comes First” and “It Takes As Long As It Takes.”

In addition to clothing and office supplies, the team also asked artists to design posters to benefit Haiti. All proceeds will go to Mercy Corps, and W+K will match that amount. Shirts ($20), Onesies ($15), tote bags ($20) and posters ($25) are all made in Oregon and sell from their online store.

pemGuest post by Thom Moran./em/p

pThis year at NeoCon, Scott Wilson of a href=”http://www.mnml.com/”MINIMAL/a is launching a href=”http://www.coalesse.com/designers/Wilson%20%20MINIMAL.html”a new line of conference furniture/a with Coalesse. The line, called SW_1, responds to changing life/work habits by challenging the conventional relationship between the chair and the table. A lower slung posture creates a more casual work setting that encourages collaboration and comfort during long meetings. Key features include a sliding surface that brings the work to you, an ample chair that encourages changing posture, and a clean, new take on tabletop power. /p

pWe snuck in early to the Coalesse showroom to hear about it from Scott himselfmdash;check out the video above for a demo. /p

Ariane Prin takes a fresh look at the hairdryer

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/06/airhair-final.jpg” width=”468″ height=”362″ alt=”airhair-final.jpg”//div

pWe’re totally in love with a href=”http://www.arianeprin.com/”Ariane Prin’s/a emAir Hair Machine/em, a hairdryer for hairdressers that emphasizes precision through a revisitation of its ergonomics. /p

pFrom Ariane:/p

blockquoteAs part of my survey, I visited many hairdressers and I was able to observe that they use the hairdryer for approximately 4.5 hours a day but that this was not very well adapted. They taught me that this object has to be smaller, lighter, wireless, that they often use the same nozzle, and that the switch allowing distinct levels of power is useless because they habitually use the maximum mode.

pThe most impressive thing is the fact that a majority of hairdressers do not use the handle because they cannot be precise, then efficient, then rapid, then have a lot of clients, and earn a lot of money. They hold it by the body of the object even if this is the hottest part. Moreover, at the end of their career, 70% of the hairdressers have wrist and shoulder articulation problems./p

pThis is for all those reasons that I started to work on the ergonomics of the hairdryer. I have made research on different shapes in blue foam and I came back to the hairdressers to decide together what could be the three most adapted shapes./blockquote/p

pThe whole process is revealed, in photos, after the jump./p

Nike’s brilliant Inarritu spot and World Cup jerseys from “rescued” bottles

pI cannot stop watching Nike’s three-minute “Write the Future” spot. Commercial or no, it is a brilliant piece of filmmaking–surprisingly directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu–that shows the ripple effects on the future prompted by a few choice moments of intense gameplay. Check it out:/p

pobject width=”468″ height=”282″param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/idLG6jh23yEhl=en_USfs=1″/paramparam name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”/paramparam name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”/paramembed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/idLG6jh23yEhl=en_USfs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”468″ height=”282″/embed/object/p

pAs it turns out, Nike’s also concerned with a future that starts not on the soccer pitch, but in the landfills of Asia. We were thrilled to learn that their World Cup soccer jerseys (worn in the commercials by Rooney, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Drogba and others) are not just made from recycled plastic bottles, but bottles harvested from landfills in Japan and Taiwan. In other words these were bottles that had erroneously made their way into the trash can rather than the recycling bin, but Nike plucked them out, melted them down into yarn, and spun them into polyester./p

pWhile Drogba and Ronaldinho have famously not made it into this year’s World Cup, the recycled jerseys will be worn by everyone on the Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, South Korea, U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia teams. /p

pimg alt=”0nikewcjersey.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0nikewcjersey.jpg” width=”468″ height=”349″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pAt eight bottles per shirt, when you factor in all of the jerseys bought by rabid fans, that adds up to 13 million bottles Nike has brought back from the environmentally dead./p

pWhat more could we ask for? Well, I kinda wish Nike could also recycle those annoying vuvuzelas…Ibefore/I the matches.br /

Bantu Swimwear Boldly Takes A Mission Where It’s Scarce Been Before!

imageBrowsing about the summer 2010 Bantu swimwear collection, it’s easy to fall in love with the bright, fun pieces and look right past their true cause. As fashionable as it is, the Bantu collection and philosophy bats not an ignorant, but a conscientious eye at the third-world state of their beloved continent to illuminate it in the social spotlight. Now that Africa has a heightened sense of popularity drawn about it for hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Bantu gives us one more great reason to turn our minds to the seasoned land of the Sahara. The attractive beachwear is really a campaign to attract tourism to Africa’s coastal beauty. Bantu, also an African language, people, and culture, uses its namesake to help define Africa (which has been stripped of many of its natural resources throughout the course of history) through it’s own form of haute couture. Instead of the traditional tailoring of clothing you’d find other places, Bantu bases its beachwear with culturally-African wax cloth, allowing them to really beat a rhythm that rings their nationalism loud and clear. Check out this slideshow for some steamy, socially-advocating Bantu swimwear samples!

Product Sound Design Workshop, August 23-26, Helsinki

pimg alt=”sound-design.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/sound-design.jpg” width=”468″ height=”131″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pAalto University and the Design Factory in Helsinki are producing a a href=”http://trac.sme-ccppd.org/SID/wiki/SIDTrainingSchoolProductSoundDesign201008″summer workshop on Product Sound Design/a. The brief is awesome, aimed at the future of interactive sound in product design:/p

blockquoteFuture products will rely on our natural capabilities of continuous and physical interaction. Moreover, for the best experience in their use, they need to stimulate, but not saturate, all our senses. Our sense of hearing is quite advanced; yet only a few product developers, engineers, marketing teams, and designers know how to make use of it properly. The COST-SID action, over the years, has developed a growing body of methods, tools, and techniques to get you started.

pOur mission in this summer school is to educate the future product design and development team members with a specific competence on interactive sound. The training school is strategically positioned as a first step in a longer research and training on the integration of SID product sound design methods with Product Design and Development, as thought at the Aalto University and MIT, for example. /blockquote/p

pThe best part: if you are accepted, you not only don’t have to pay a registration fee, but, if you are from outside of Finland, you get a travel stipend of 600 EU to cover your costs of travel and accommodation. There are some eligibility restrictions; seems like you should be either a Masters or PhD student to apply:/p

blockquoteThe target participants are 16-20 students in the last year of masters studies, or first two years of PhD studies in design, engineering, or economics. They will be selected by the relevance of their studies or research to the product sound design. We expect about half of the trainees to be Aalto students./blockquote

pWe can tell this is going to be a competitive one, a href=”http://trac.sme-ccppd.org/SID/wiki/SIDTrainingSchoolProductSoundDesign201008″so start working on your applications/a! /pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/product_sound_design_workshop_august_23-26_helsinki__16725.asp”(more…)/a
