New Xbox and Mac Mini show Microsoft and Apple’s design divergence

pimg alt=”0xboxmacmini.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0xboxmacmini.jpg” width=”468″ height=”1120″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pYesterday Microsoft took the wraps off of their A HREF=”http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/” redesigned Xbox/A while this morning Apple quietly released their A HREF=”http://www.apple.com/macmini/” new Mac Mini/A. Though the products are not in the same categories, both reveal the companies’ diverging design philosophies: Microsoft is clearly going after the Alienware-inspired male-centric gaming demographic, whereas Apple seems to be seeking admission to MoMA’s permanent collection by unibody-izing the previously plastic Mini into an ultra-minimal form./p

pIn terms of a subjective preference of style, Apple’s direction has got my vote hands-down, though it can be argued they’re simply doing more of the same; others, like A HREF=”http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/is-the-xbox-360-slim-and-kinect-design-a-new-era-for-microsoft/” IDigital Trends’/I Rob Enderle, think/A the new Xbox means Microsoft is “inching closer” or even “passing Apple in product design.” I think Enderle’s assertions are nuts, but Xbox fans disagree or find the design irrelevant: After being announced, A HREF=”http://www.examiner.com/x-28759-Atlanta-Video-Game-News-Examiner~y2010m6d15-Xbox-360-Slim-sells-out-on-Amazon-in-less-than-one-day” the new Xbox sold out on Amazon/A in less than 24 hours. Different strokes….br /

Review: The Unclutterer comment policy

With the rising temperatures in the northern hemisphere, we’ve had a similar influx of spammers, trolls, link dumpers, and general negative attitudes in our comment section recently. Thankfully, it isn’t a large percentage of our comment traffic that is behaving this way. However, it’s significantly larger than what we’re accustom to and monitoring it is starting to interfere with our work flow.

As a result, we thought it might be nice to review our comment policy to help everyone play fairly in the comments for the rest of the summer:

  1. No nasty grams. Nasty grams are clutter, so we clean them off the server the same way we throw away junk mail in our homes. What is a nasty gram? Ad hominem attacks, filth, things you would never say to someone’s face or in front of your boss, and offensive statements all qualify as nasty grams.
  2. Broken link/spelling error notifications. We prefer that you e-mail us when we have broken links or spelling errors in our posts, but if you do tell us about our mistakes in the comments, we’ll delete your comment after the problem is fixed in our post.
  3. Advertisements. These are usually left by spam bots on old posts and we have a script that deletes these automatically.
  4. Link dumps promoting your site/product/brand. If you’re someone we know in the real world, we might keep up your links because we can vouch that they’re safe and reputable. If we don’t know you, your links might disappear because we can’t verify you’re not a spammer.

We love the vast majority of our commenters, our readers who share insights, suggestions, personal stories, and encouragement for the benefit of others. Our guess is that most of the spammers, trolls, link dumpers, and negative Nellies aren’t regular readers of the website — they’re people who swoop in once and then swoop out never to be heard from again. Reviewing our comment policy will hopefully discourage these folks from taking up root in our amazing community.

In short, this is a blog called Unclutterer. We’re people who obviously are not fond of having clutter in our homes, so we try our best to keep it off the site. We encourage an active and robust comment section where people can exchange ideas and insights while being respectful of others.

pa href=”http://www.designmiami.com/”Design Miami/Basel/a celebrates its fifth anniversary with a record number of exhibiting galleries. Since its first edition in 2005, the fair has moved from a small church in the old part of Basel to a hall of its own, hosting 32 different galleries from all over the world./p

p”People used to come for Art Basel, and then they would stop at Design Miami/Basel. Now, there are also people coming just to see us,” said Craig Robins, cofounder of the fair. /p

pThe 2010 Design Miami/Basel is chock full of passion, excellence and creativity. Works by modern designers like Mattia Bonetti from Switzerland, Forrest Myers from the United States and Jurgen Bey from the Netherlands exhibit next to young talents like Dutch Maarten Baas, Spanish Nacho Carbonell and British Max Lamb./p

pSheldon Lapierre, director of New York’s DROOG gallery, makes his first appearance at Design Miami/Basel this year. “This is the most special fair because of the selection of galleries, the quality of the works exhibited and the mix between contemporary and modern design, which has a high value,” he said./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/design_miamibasel_celebrating_its_fifth_anniversary__16738.asp”(more…)/a

Death of Celebrity Favorite Designer J. Wallace Tutt Shrouded in Mystery

Mysterious business surrounding the recent death of J. Wallace Tutt, the interior designer behind such projects as Gianni Versace’s South Beach mansion, as well as other projects for Florida-bound celebrities. Tutt passed away in the Bahamas on Saturday “in a grassy area of the island known as ‘The Narrows’,” the same location of his Rock House Hotel. However, neither his business nor the police are talking about what’s happened, leaving people like this writer to speculate that it’s either foul play or something indecent. Will be interesting to see how the story plays out:

Tutt moved to a private retreat near Harbour Island in 2002, where he transformed an old home into a nine-room luxury hotel.

Rock House staff declined to speak to reporters about Tutt’s death, but said the hotel would be closed for a week.

Alvin Smith, a local parliamentarian who is the Bahamian House’s speaker, said he was shocked by Tutt’s death because he “seemed to be young and energetic.”

Update: Recent developments have come out in the case, with the police now ruling out foul play and saying that Tutt passed due to a heart attack. More details, such as memorial information, will be posted on the designer’s site as they are made available. Also, we have now deleted the image used previously in this post, as we were in error for displaying a different Rock House hotel, one not in any way connected to the one owned by Tutt. Finally, this writer used some confusing language about the location of the designer’s death in the previous post and have since revised it in order to present more clear and precise information about the story.
