People’s Biennial

A grassroots art campaign takes an exhibit of hidden America on the road
PeoplesBiennial_1.jpg

In an effort to highlight artists from five U.S. cities not typically considered artistic hotbeds, the People’s Biennial features the work of 36 artists from Portland, OR; Rapid City, SD; Winston-Salem, NC; Scottsdale, AZ and Haverford, PA. Presented by non-profit organization Independent Curators International and curated by Harrell Fletcher (of Learning to Love You More fame) and Jens Hoffmann, the traveling exhibition unites overlooked and undiscovered artists alike for a realistic portrait of creativity in America.

The grassroots art campaign features an array of works spanning photographic documentation of military life in the heartland, video installations of biological activity in urban ecosystems to complex marble-like statues created out of soap bars. Artists were selected through the democratic process of open-calls and events during the past year, where the curators hand-selected the body of work currently on display.

The exhibit will travel through each of the five communities, stopping first in Portland, OR where it will reside at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art until 17 Oct 2010. From there, the exhibit will continue to travel around the U.S. through 2 March 2012.

Boats, Barns, Bulbs: American Designer Brendan Ravenhill

pWe took a little time today to explore a href=”http://www.brendanravenhill.com/”Brendan Ravenhill’s/a portfolio of works, after receiving photos of his emBare Light/em, a delicate, richly detailed version of the classic hanging light bulb. In browsing, we found that not only does Brendan produce lighting and furniture, but he’s also a boat and barn builder, a sensibility that informs much of his smaller scale-work. Though the Bare Light is probably the most immediately striking piece in his repertoire, there is something wonderfully understated and poetic about his slightly off-keel tractor shedmdash;both are pictured above. /p

MARS Turbine

The next floating, more efficient step in wind turbine technology

by Gregory Stefano

mars2.jpg mars3.jpg

Wind energy in itself isn’t a novel concept, but the MARS Turbine (Maggen Air Rotor System) puts a new spin on conventional wind turbines with its Goodyear Blimp otherworldliness and innovative operating system.

Designer Fred Ferguson created MARS as an energy source in remote areas—like scientific expeditions to the Arctic—that need consistent power but lack resources to build a 200-foot tall wind turbine. Essentially a blimp covered in fins, Ferguson’s turbine flies 1,000 feet high, connecting to the ground with a tether that doubles as an energy conductor.

mars1.jpg

Like conventional wind turbines, MARS uses magnetic induction to produce energy, but the difference comes with increased altitude. Catching wind 800 feet higher than its traditional counterparts, there’s much less resistance and greater wind speed, ultimately allowing the MARS access to a superior crop of wind. Another advantage, the turbine can produce energy in winds as low as seven mph and as high as 63 mph whereas contemporary turbines shut down around 35 mph and with little or no wind, they become useless.

mars5.jpg

This innovative solution solves a lot of the existing problems with mining wind energy, avoiding the hazardous carbon footprint standard turbines leave behind when built initially, producing more energy and universally being more versatile. The MARS Turbine will be commercially available early 2011, and they are also currently working on a backpack-sized version for charging your iPad on your next Yosemite backcountry adventure.

In Brief: Macy’s Teams with Haitian Artisans, IKEA Goes Geothermal in Colorado

  • Looking for an exotic and charitable gift for that rapidly approaching fall wedding? We suggest heading to Macy’s, which come October will offer traditional Haitian artisan home décor products including quilts, metalwork (pictured at right, a hand-tooled serving tray from the blacksmith community in Croix des Bouquets), ceramics, woodcarvings, paintings, and jewelry as part of its new “The Heart of Haiti” initiative. The program, which was masterminded by Fairwinds Trading and the Brandaid Project to bring trade and aid to the earthquake-devastated nation, has already provided funds to Haitian artisans to buy needed materials to return to work, and more than 200 artisans are now at work full-time. According to Macy’s, “Heart of Haiti” is the first collection of home décor handcrafts since the January 2010 earthquake. Each item is designed by master Haitian artists, handmade by local artisans, and signed by the artist. The collection will be available online and in 25 Macy’s stores. We’re partial to Carnival Jakmel’s whimsical papier-mache creations, inspired by the mix of colors and prints of Haitian street fashion.

  • Elsewhere in retail news, IKEA is bringing meatballs n’ lingonberries and Malm beds to Colorado. The Swedish furniture giant is going deep in the high-altitude locale with a 415,000-square-foot store that will also be the first U.S. IKEA location to integrate a geothermal system. Slated to open next fall on 13.5 acres in the town of Centennial, the store is on track to be Colorado’s largest single building with geothermal heating and cooling. IKEA has already completed the underground work, which entailed drilling a bunch of 500-foot-deep holes into the earth for pipes holding heat-transferring liquid circulating through underground loops to either warm or cool the temperature inside the store. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory is advising the ambitious project (and also kind of hoping that their efforts will be rewarded with some swell chairs). Meanwhile, for those not excited by innovative energy schemes, there’s more in store, including 10,000 items designed exclusively for the Centennial location, 50 different room settings, three complete model home interiors, a children’s play area, and a 500-seat restaurant. Pass the marzipan-accented Princess Cake!

    Daliy Obsesh – RuMe Cuff

imageThere is nothing more stylish or fashionable right now than going green! It’s THE color of the season (and every season after!). Whether you’re wearing an organic cotton tee, re-doing your bedroom floors with reclaimed wood or bringing your own reuseable totes to Trader Joe’s, going green is the way to go! Eco-conscious companies are popping up all over the map from NYC to LA and across the globe. One of these companies just so happens to be at the top of our favorite list here at the Hive. RuMe is a fair trade manufacturing company that produces reuseable bags.
RuMe stands for ReUseMe. The company started as a reaction to the growing concern about the detrimental effects that plastic bags have on our planet and believes that now, more than ever, there is a serious need for consumers to take the responsibility of environment protection into their own hands. RuMe bags offer a simple and affordable solution for consumers who are looking to be eco conscious by using less and reusing more. Their bags are considered to be high quality as well as both stylish and affordable. Two of our very favorite features. Better yet, they are designed and packaged following a no-waste philosophy.
Currently, we are totally obsessed with the RumeCuff, their newest invention. Imagine this … you’re headed out for a bike ride with your honey. He’s got nothing but his bike, but you’re still scrambling to find something to hold your keys and a couple of dollars for a post-ride cappuccino. You do NOT want to carry your purse, but what? RuMe has got the answer for you! The new RuMe Cuff. Designed as a reusable cuff for a coffee cup, it also includes a useful pocket that functions as an armband wallet.
Now you can kill two birds with one stone. A place to put your cash and your coffee and saving the planet in the meantime!
