1-Bit Symphony

1-bit-symphony1.jpg

Creating music with an electrical engineer’s perspective, Tristan Perich‘s “1-Bit Symphony” utilizes one microchip on an electronic circuit to perform a five-movement composition.

The simplified follow-up to the NYC-based musician and visual artist’s “1-Bit Music” project continues his efforts to connect a physical medium with the digital world. By programming an original arrangement on a single microchip with simple control buttons and housing it all in a throwback CD jewel case, Perich makes and presents electronic music in its most elegant form.

An example of his interest in orchestral compositions and one-bit audio (see some of his other work in this early Cool Hunting Video), the manifestation of data as sound provokes thought with its look at the “abstract logic of software”—especially when compared to today’s intangible music industry.

A great gift for fans of electronic music and soldering alike, pre-order “1-Bit Symphony” (it’s due out 24 August 2010) from
Bang on a Can
for $30.

YouTube and Guggenheim Launch Video Biennial, Seek Submissions

youtube play.jpgGooglenheim lives! Fresh off their collaboration for a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired shelter design contest, Google (which owns YouTube) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation have joined forces for a project of global, discipline-shattering proportions: YouTube Play. Described as a “biennial of creative video,” and co-sponsored by HP, the initiative aims “to discover and showcase the most exceptional talent working in the ever-expanding realm of online video.” Anything goes, as long as it’s creative, from animation and mini-documentaries to music videos and non-narrative hijinks. A jury of to-be-named celebrated figures will select up to 20 videos submitted from around the world to be presented at the Guggenheim in New York City on October 21, 2010, with simultaneous presentations at the Guggenheim museums in Berlin, Bilbao, and Venice. “With this online global initiative, we’re not looking for what’s ‘now,’ we’re looking for what’s next,” said Nancy Spector, deputy director and chief curator at the Guggenheim. “This collaborative project with YouTube and HP will highlight some of the most innovative work being produced today and will draw on the Guggenheim’s ongoing commitment to new media.” Ready to nominate your work and claim your rightful position in the art world? Just upload it to YouTube and then submit it here here by July 31. Only one submission is allowed per person, so choose carefully—and creatively.

National Geographic Apologizes for Publishing Photoshopped Image

“My parents live very close to the city airport and every other year they host an air show,” explained amateur photographer William Lascelles in his submission to National Geographic‘s “Your Shot” program, which features extraordinary user-submitted photography. “This year the Blue Angels were the highlight and were flying over the house during performances. I took my father’s dog outside and made him pose!” That gee-whiz caption accompanied this image:

Alas, Lascelles’s “lucky shot” turned out to be less than lucky: it was the product of digital manipulation (prohibited by Your Shot rules) and National Geographic is not amused. The photo, which was selected by senior photo editor Susan Welchman to appear on the Your Shot site last October, was published in the February 2010 issue of National Geographic. After several readers insisted that the photo was a fake, the publication investigated further. Lascelles ultimately admitted to fabricating the picture as well as a similar one he sent to Welchman when she requested the next photo in his shooting sequence. National Geographic has issued an apology for publishing the image and will continue giving anyone a shot to have a photo featured in the magazine. Just make it real. “The world is already full of visual artifice, and we aren’t running Your Shot to add to it,” notes director of photography David Griffin. “We want to see the world through your eyes, not the tools of Photoshop.”

Jaguar XJ

Jaguar_2011XJ1.jpg

With an eye towards sustainability, Jaguar is making a distinct effort to refresh its old English image with the introduction of the 2011 XJ, the luxury carmaker’s flagship model. Constructed from 50 percent recycled aluminum, the XJ is something of a lightweight compared to previous iterations. Its riveted and glue-bonded unibody—derived from aerospace technology—makes for a lighter weight skin than steel without compromising safety, increasing the vehicle’s efficiency tenfold. The use of aluminum saves six tons of carbon per vehicle over its lifetime.

Jaguar_2011XJ5.jpg

In the future, Jaguar aims to increase the ratio of recycled aluminum to 75 percent. The greener engineering is in line with the XJ’s heritage of performance. The lighter weight—as much as 700 pounds less than similar luxury vehicles—means more speed, equating to 464 hp and 424 pound-feet of torque in the supercharged version that can reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The naturally aspirated engine produces a fine, fast 385 hp. Fuel economy also gets a boost, bringing it up to 23 mpg on the highway. And the interior features sustainably harvested wood veneer (available in nine grains) or carbon fiber.

Jaguar_2011XJ3.jpg Jaguar_2011XJ6.jpg

While the 2011 XJ has been turning heads in Los Angeles for a three-month long City Takeover, the company also engaged in an effort to understand the waste that each vehicle spawns. Jaguar is participating in a comprehensive study that measures the environmental impact of the XJ, including customer use, disposal and recycling. The study is conducted by the U.K. Department of Transport’s Vehicle Certification Agency and will be used as a way for Jaguar to approach further environmental changes.

Starting at $72,500, the new XJ series will be available this fall.

Bobin Kil’s car concept with removeable, driveable wheels

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/06/0bobinkil01.jpg” width=”468″ height=”288″ alt=”0bobinkil01.jpg”//div

pI am lovvvvving this idea. We’ve seen concepts for electric cars where each wheel has its own motor, and we’ve all seen a Segway and motorized unicycles; designer A HREF=”http://bbkil.blogspot.com/2010/05/light-weight-concept-included-segway.html” Bobin Kil’s Lightweight concept/A combines all of these things into one. /p

pTool around in the car, then park it and you and a partner can each take a wheel–literally–to zoom around on, individually. Of course it would stink if an enterprising thief decided to drive off on one of your wheels, but in this fantasy future we’re hoping crime has been abolished./p

Timeless Watch

TimelessWatch-1.jpg

Rogan recently released their newest bit of design re-invention with the Timeless Watch. Made in NYC, the wrist candy repurposes old watch pieces, making each one both unique and a chic example of upcycling.

But the best part of this accessory, its “timeless” empty face, not only neatly dismisses the modern anxieties of analogue-vs.-digital and how to convey the appropriate importance without looking too flashy, but in the process also cleverly comments on the whole convention of keeping time at all.

timeless_gld_004.jpg

Just in time for summer, the conceptual accessory introduces freedom from deadlines, time changes, alarm clocks (and the constant inching towards death) with its sleekly sustainable design. The bracelet, available in either matte black or gold, sells from Rogan online and in their stores for $110.
