Good Products

Using an ancient method for cultivating hemp, Good‘s oils, salad dressings and mayonnaise contain all the flavor of standard olive oils but with even greater health benefits. The cold pressed, vegan-friendly hemp seed oil, full of omegas three and six (usually acquired from eating fish), essential fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid, don’t contain any harmful trans or saturated fats that raise cholesterol and lead to heart disease. (Food revolutionary Jamie Oliver is a fan.)

Technically a nut, hemp seeds not only make a valuable source of protein but are a highly sustainable crop. In addition, Good’s Devon, U.K.-based farm grows hemp naturally without the use of pesticides or herbicides—and after harvesting the seeds puts the remaining crop to use.

CH recently tested out Good’s Mild Hemp Seed Oil, as well as their lemony Caesar dressing, and will be scooping it up from Whole Foods stores. U.K. residents can purchase Good products online or at grocers such as Sainsbury’s and Whole Foods.

Practicing simple living

I recently led a three-day workshop titled “The Practice of Simplicity.” When choosing the name for this program, I specifically chose the word practice for the title because of its broad meaning.

People who aspire to a life of simplicity often consider themselves practitioners — in the sense that a doctor might say she practices medicine, an unclutterer might say he practices simplicity.

At the same time, living simply requires practice. No one goes to bed one night in complete chaos and disorder and wakes up the next morning master of an organized and clutter-free wonderland. Transformation doesn’t happen over night, and achieving and maintaining it most definitely takes practice.

Along these lines, simplicity isn’t a goal or an end result. Simplicity is a means to an end, with the ultimate destination being a remarkable life focused on what matters most to you. You don’t practice simplicity for simplicity’s sake, you practice simplicity to clear the distractions that get in the way of the life you desire.

Before I practiced simplicity, I spent a lot of time practicing other, less helpful skill sets — lack of focus, stress, worry, poor time management, operating on auto-pilot, pack rattiness, bad sleep and eating habits, and frustration immediately come to my mind. I practiced these unproductive skill sets so often that I became an expert on these traits and have spent the past nine years training myself not to use them.

What are you practicing? Are you a practitioner of simple living? If you’re struggling with your uncluttering efforts, remind yourself that it takes practice, even for people with already streamlined homes and offices. Keep at it! You’ll get better each day you choose to practice simplicity.

As Seen in Norway…Reiulf Ramstads Trollstigen Project

0615jesconstruct1.jpg

This writer’s currently winding his way through Norway, checking out of the National Tourist Roads Project, thanks to a press trip funded by Innovation Norway. Today, we checked out the construction on architect Reiulf Ramstad‘s Trollstigen project. The overlook, which juts out over a waterfall (as well as the most terrifying road we’ve ever been on, as a person deathly afraid of heights), the visitor center and new vendor outlets, are still being finished. We got a great, up-close look at the construction in process, which you’ll find photos of after the jump…

Getaway To La Jolla’s Lodge At Torrey Pines!

imageA stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla gives you the beauty of Southern California at your fingertips. The crashing waves against the carved dunes of the coast, a seagull filled lagoon, and miles of hiking trails are enough to lure you into the San Diego area. Situated alongside the Torrey Pines State Reserve, the lodge offers the best that any AAA five-star golf course resort would — terraced fine dining establishments overlooking the resort, garden like golf courses, pool lounging- cabana style, and spas that have mastered the art of relaxation. Additionally, it’s decor is a tribute to California greats, pieces by A.R. Valentine adorn the walls, and the entryway is modeled after that of Pasadena’s Black House. As a walk through the resort is almost like taking a tour through the mid-20th century, there’s not a better way to explore the roots of rustic California. Experience the Golden State like never before and checkout some of the views at The Lodge At Torrey Pines in this slideshow!

Johnny Kelly for YouTube Play

Nexus director Johnny Kelly has directed a new film to promote YouTube Play – a collaborative project between YouTube and the Guggenheim Foundation that seeks to showcase the very best creative videos from around the world…

The idea behind YouTube Play is that any non-commercial films posted on YouTube in the last two years can be considered – and new submissions can be posted on YouTube and then submitted to youtube.com/play. A jury of film buffs will decide which works will be presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in a special exhibition in October this year. Simultaneous presentations of the work will also take place at the Guggenheim museums in Berlin, Bilbao and Venice. Submissions close July 31.

Here’s the film Kelly directed to promote the project:

“My brief was to create something that would reference the variety of different worlds created by youtube users,” explains Kelly, “and also drum up some excitement. With all these different worlds in the animation, I wanted to get across that idea of clicking on something without knowing exactly what you are going to see – just like on YouTube. It could be the greatest thing you’ve seen in your life, or it could be a sneezing panda – or one and the same!

“I collaborated with a production designer Graham Staughton who, along with his team, built literally everything you see in the whole film,” Kelly continues. “On a very tight time and budget, everything was made from scratch except for the fake foliage in the forest sequence, which was stolen from a pot plant.”

As is the way these days, there is making-of film hosted on, but of course, YouTube:
