pemCorrection: We just found out there are six projects, not five. /em/p
pa href=”http://www.ncl.ac.uk/gps/staff/profile/monica.moreno-figueroa”Monica Moreno/a and a href=”http://joemalia.net/”Joe Malia/a, in conjunction with Newcastle University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, have organized a href=”http://www.interventions.org.uk”emInterventions/em/a, a show of collaborative projects by social scientists and interaction designers . SIx researchers from the University of Newcastle were paired with six designers from the Royal College of Art to explore areas of overlap. The project kicked off with an intensive, approach-building workshop and projects were developed over the following 8 weeks. /p
pAn exhibition of the work will open on Tuesday, June 29th at the Exlibris Gallery at Newcastle University in the UK. For a list of participants, a href=”http://www.interventions.org.uk/index.php/interventions-participants-announced/”click here/a./p
pCore-fave Nelly Ben Hayoun sent us emTheatre of Air/em, conceived with Dr. Alison J. Williams, a geography researcher who specializes in UK military airspaces. Nelly and Alison have developed the idea that through personal wind farms, individuals can create radar white noise and prevent aircraft from flying overhead, reclaiming their piece of the sky./p
blockquoteThese spaces are hidden zones of military control and power projection. They are used by UK military air forces to train and prepare for combat situations. The idea behind this project is to creatively use interviews conducted with a number of UK military pilots and navigators to think through how these spaces are performed. At the heart of these interviews was a concern to uncover the hidden geographies of military airspaces through discussions on how these users perceive and imagine the complex geometries of the spaces through which they fly. The research considers how this renders airspace as a theatre, both in the military and the performing arts sense./blockquote
pFind out more about the exhibition a href=”http://www.interventions.org.uk/”here/a or head to Newcastle upon Tyne to see Nelly and Alison’s 4 meter high windfarms. /p

Unitasker Wednesday: The Krustbuster
Posted in: UncategorizedAll Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!
When did knives become too difficult to use? When did crust become something you don’t eat? When was using your fingers or a chopstick ineffective for pinching two pieces of bread together? When did we become a people demanding the production of the Krustbuster?
Next thing you know, there will be a device made just to dispose of the sandwich-crust border! Actually, my favorite part of this device is its packaging, which promotes the Krustbuster’s “multi-uses”:
So! Many! Sandwiches! But how in the world do they use it on s’mores’ crunchy graham crackers?? Maybe stale graham crackers? Where is a YouTube video when you actually want one?
Thanks to Erik for sharing this wonderful unitasker with us.
PHE 2010: 10 Latin American Artists
Posted in: Uncategorized
As part of this year’s PhotoEspaña festival, the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid is exhibiting work by ten emerging Latin American artists…
The show, titled Encubrimientos (Cover ups), is the second edition of the Descubrimientos programme, organised by PhotoEspaña, which encourages artists working in Latin America to submit their work for possible participation in the exhibition. Over 400 artists entered this year, and the ten featured were chosen by the curators Alejandro Castellote and Juan Antonio Molina Cuesta. A selection of the work is shown here, with more info on the show at the PhotoEspaña website, phe.es.
Cinthya Soto (shown above and top) is an artist from Costa Rica. Her series, Pictografías, documents decorative paintings found in bars, restaurants and warehouses.
Argentinian photographer Sebastián Friedman has taken a series of photographs titled Los emigrantes, which document emigrating families posing for a final photograph outside the door of the home they are leaving.
Andrés Asturias, from Guatemala, has taken a series of painterly photographs on beaches in Guatemala and New York.
Also from Guatemala is Andrea Aragón, who has created this series Super-Rubias, which explores the power of blonde hair as a status symbol in her home country.
Ecuadorian artist María Teresa Ponce took a series (one shown above) of landscape photographs across three South American oil exporting countries: Venezuala, Ecuador and Argentina. The three countries are connected through a common oil pipe line.
IPC Photo is a group of three photographers from Brazil who have created a series of images (one shown above) taken during the recent election campaign in São Paulo. Each event was shown from three angles, revealing the staging of political events.
PhotoEspaña is on until July 25 in venues across Madrid, Cuenca and Lisbon. More info is at phe.es.

pPhilips’ a href=”http://www.lighting.philips.com/microsite/living_colors/”LivingColors/a is a color-changing LED lamp that emits a rich spectrum of colored light against a wall for reflection back into the room. /p
pI’ve heard about this before, but at the North American launch of the product at NeoCon this year, I discovered the suprisingly awesome remote that comes with the system. Users need only to tap the RGB wheel to change the color of the light instantaneously. By sliding a finger along the gradient, the LED will slowly change from ROY to G to BIV. There are also controls for brightness and saturation, so if you’re tired of color, you can turn it all to white. Watch our quick video demo in the video above. /p

pThough I can’t imagine wanting a color changing, LED mood light, something about tapping a color wheel and getting an immediate response feels like magic. If only it could control the colors of paint…/p
pThe lights are in the process of making their way to American stores, but can be bought in Europe or on a href=”http://www.amazon.com/Philips-818566-LivingColors-Translucent-Changing/dp/B002NGNU88/?tag=core77-20″Amazon/a./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/featured_items/neocon_2010_video_control_the_color_of_your_room_by_remote__16745.asp”(more…)/a
