After 14-Year Ban Terry Richardson Back to Shooting for W
Posted in: UncategorizedThis writer figures that we’re all adults here and you can make up your own minds about regularly-controversial photographer Terry Richardson. So feel free to take it as either the turning of a new leaf or the disintegration of principles with the news that, after a ban of nearly a decade and a half, Richardson is shooting again for W. With a big batch of job shifting going on at the magazine recently (mostly out the door) due to new editor Stefano Tonchi running the ship, the photographer has a bulky spread in their July issue, called “Lunch Break.” As New York‘s fashion blog reports, this follows the magazine refusing to hire him since 1996 when then-art director Dennis Freeman “reportedly banned Richardson from his pages after taking offense to a photo the photographer took of a model with her head in the oven.” Though maybe by including this video of the recent shoots on their site, W was playing it safe and trying to show that there wasn’t any funny business going on at any time (and definitely not during those multiple, random city shots):

Will someone be able to use this before I do?
Posted in: UncategorizedI mentioned last week in “Musings on children’s birthday parties” that my plan was to bake my son a Dinosaur Train cake for his first birthday. Now that the cake has been made, I no longer have a need for the train-shaped cake pans.
A small, sentimental part of me thought I might keep the cake pans. My friend Julie and I even came up with more than 25 things I could do with the pans if I decided to keep them — everything from jello and ice molds to flower pots and bird baths. Since my storage space is very limited in my kitchen cupboard, though, I knew keeping them would be difficult.
Before I made my final decision about what to do with the cake pans, I made a pact with myself to see if someone else I know might need them. I put a message up on Twitter and on Facebook to see if any of my friends could use them. I decided that if someone else needed them before me, I would give them away without hesitation.
Seconds after I posted my message on Twitter, I got a response from my friend Nanette saying that her nephew had an upcoming birthday and she would love to make him a train cake. Tomorrow, the cake pans are going to Nanette and they will make an awesome cake for another little boy.
This uncluttering process has me asking the question, “Will someone be able to use this before I do?” about a number of items in my home. I ended up giving a pair of hand-tooled leather boots to a friend because I realized by the time I can wear tight-fitting shoes again (if ever), the boots won’t be in style. If I give them to her, at least she can wear and enjoy them now. I passed along a tent to a friend who regularly goes camping. And, my painting supplies went to a colleague’s wife who is an artist and will use them well before I “find” the time.
This question is best asked of things you’re storing and using extremely infrequently. Check your long-term storage spaces and see if there are things others might be able to use before you do. If so, consider getting these things out of your home and into the arms of someone who could actually use them with regularity.
Prettify Your Makeup Collection With These Embossed & Printed Palettes!
Posted in: UncategorizedWhile I am one of the most meticulous and detail-oriented beauty collectors around, I have to admit that some makeup is created equal. Sure, I have some staples I swear by, and I definitely believe that many high-end products are worth the splurge, but when deciding between two similar products at the same price point, there’s often not too much of a difference. When it comes to making a decision between one golden taupe bronzer and another brand’s golden taupe bronzer, it often comes down to tracking down reviews online, using up all the samples at the makeup counter… OR you could just choose the prettiest package! High-end beauty brands are stepping up their game with embossed and printed palettes, hoping to woo makeup mavens by convincing them that you’ll look your prettiest if you use the prettiest-looking products… and I’m totally falling for it! Some, like Guerlain’s Cherry Blossom Palette and Dior’s Lace-Embossed Eyeshadow, are almost too pretty to use! Almost. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the prettiest palettes I’ve found! |
Trippy new animated music promos
Posted in: UncategorizedJust seen a few new animated music promos – all of which have a degree of psychedelic influence, so here they are. First up is this new video for Breakbot‘s track Baby I’m Yours on Ed Banger records – for which director Irina Dakeva painted over 2000 frames in watercolours – created from rushes and 2D animations. The paintings were then rotoscoped at Parisian production company Wizz. Each picture was then reintegrated on Flame animated backgrounds. Et voila:
The next video is for track The Music Scene by Ninja Tune act Blockhead. Directed / animated by Anthony F. Schepperd, I would probably go as far as to say that this video aims towards the brain-meltingly psychedelic. And it’s my favourite of the three films shown here…. On the Ninja Tune website the video is described thus: “The wreckage of a city re-taken by nature becomes a playground for Plasticine-brained mannequins, mechanical spiders, eye-screens and tentacles; and, of course, the animals from the new Blockhead album artwork.” Are you ready? Here goes:
OK, so the next film isn’t a music video – but rather it’s an animated promo for London’s Lovebox festival created by Tundra* who were briefed to create a ‘viral’.
“The brief was totally open so we sat down and started scribbling and quickly realised that we wanted to illustrate that the festival is one of the last places you can really let go – the last place of anarchy,” say the guys atTundra.
Written, directed and produced by Tundra* with LoveHate. Music: Groove Armada. Client: Mama Group Plc
