For a man whose enigma dictates that he is rarely seen in person—even at his own shows—Martin Margiela must be one of the most prolific designers so far this year. “20,” a new show running throughout the summer at the beautiful Somerset House in London, celebrates 20 years of one of the most influential designers to have emerged from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Curated by the Antwerp’s own Mode Musuem, which itself hosts the awesome Svart, this exhibition is dominated by the color white and its various shades and guises used by Margiela across his extensive body of work both in fashion and more recently in his design work.

Capturing Margiela’s vision is no easy feat, but the Somerset House show incorporates installations, films, photography and visuals to demonstrate the deconstructivist approach so familiar to fans of the designer’s work. “20” underlines the power of Margiela’s artistic vision and the resulting garments, the collections and indeed the attention to detail in couture and design.

Margiela plays an important role in the progression of fashion, from its power-dressing, dominating silhouettes of the 80s, as he developed his own visual language—one based on quality and clarity of thought, hyper-intelligent use of textiles and cutting-edge techniques.

Margiela_20_2.jpg

It’s a must-see for serious fans of fashion and form, a celebration of a man of subtlety and depth who lets his work do the talking.

“20” runs until 5 September 2010.

Santiago Calatrava Unveils Design for Rios Museum of Tomorrow

RIO GRAND: Santiago Calatrava’s design for the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro (Renderings courtesy Santiago Calatrava, LLC)

Having recently designed a swooping quintet of sets for the New York City Ballet and earned his rightful place in Transformers 3, more-than-meets-the-eye architect Santiago Calatrava is looking to the future (the future, Conan?) with his bold design for Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow. We’re not sure what the oxymoronically named museum will contain, or whether the curators will have access to a flux capacitor, but it’s bound to be forward-looking! Unveiled earlier this week at a press conference in Brazil, the renderings and models zoom like a bullet train that has just swallowed a giant reptile. “Rio de Janeiro has captured my imagination,” said Calatrava. “And through the expression of space and forms, I am excited to begin this journey.”

The commission is part of the “Marvelous Port” urban design project, which aims to transform Rio’s historical waterfront into a thriving cultural and residential community in time to welcome the world for the 2016 Olympic Games. Located on Pier Maua, the Museum of Tomorrow is designed to celebrate the natural landscape with a cantilevered roof and facade with moving elements that extends almost to the full length of the pier. The two-story building’s northern location will make the most of a continuous landscaping strip along the southern length of the pier, ensuring that the future doesn’t obstruct views of the past—in the form of the historical Monastery de Sao Bento do Rio de Janeiro.

pUnlike Fractal, Module is, well, modular, resulting from further research on the fractal growth patterns of trees. According to the designers, the table “minimizes waste, saves energy during the production process and makes production more cost effective” because of its steeply angled walls and hollow structure. The tables can stand alone or be linked seamlessly and infinitely. The modular patterns that result can be seen below. The table is 3d-printed in white and red ABS./p

Lunch Line

lunchline1.jpg

Highlighted on Good, the new documentary “Lunch Line” takes a shrewd look at what’s served in school cafeterias from past to present. With a seemingly similar mission to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, “Lunch Line” examines the USDA’s relaxed nutritional guidelines while trumpeting the Chicago-based Organic School Project—an organization that teaches children the fundamentals of gardening and healthy living.

The thought-provoking trailer is packed with intriguing quotes from senators, lobbyists, and USDA directors alike, with one food and health official declaring school lunches as “some of the healthiest food we have.” Created by filmmakers Michael Graziano and Ernie Park and sponsored by Applegate Farms, “Lunch Line” will soon be available on DVD.

Boatanic: A floating farm proposal for inner-city waterways

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/06/boatanic-plan.jpg” width=”468″ height=”393″ alt=”boatanic-plan.jpg”//div

pAs a href=”http://www.damianosullivan.com/”Damien O’Sullivan/a, a designer in Rotterdam, walked the waterways in Amsterdam, he noticed that the typical tourist boats would make fantastic greenhousesmdash;they are ideally suited to gathering heat and light with their large glass windows. If tourists were replaced with vegetables, and if the boat was retrofitted with some farming and energy harvesting equipment, these little ships could make excellent, small-sized, mobile urban farms. /p

pbr /
This is the backbone of a href=”http://www.boatanic.com/”Boatanic/a, O’Sullivan’s new proposal for a distributed urban farm set to debut in 2011. Boatanic will offer fresh, year-round seasonal produce, sold directly from the quay and by subscription. Bike delivery services will be available to local restaurants buying wholesale. The system also proposes a return to commerce in inner-city canals, which have become less popular as citizens favor roadway transportation. /p

pThe proposal is on exhibit at Fort Aspen in Amsterdam, but the system will be expandable to waterway cities in moderate climates everywhere./p

After Months of Work, Arsonists Destroy Architects Restoration Project in a Few Hours

0623archarson.jpg

If you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and are eager to believe that there’s no good left in the world, we’re here to help. A tragic story coming out of the UK this morning about architect Jonathan Reed‘s Dale Head House project. After having spent the past 10 months and more than £500,000 on the careful rebuilding and restoration of what was to be his dream home, arsonists showed up in the middle of the night and torched the place, leaving it utterly destroyed. Here’s a bit from the Daily Mail‘s report.

“The incident is upsetting because so much time and energy has been invested over the past year by many talented local crafts people.”

“All the materials were sourced locally and as the house is in such a sensitive location we were hoping the result would be a landmark renovation within the National Park.

The police are now on the hunt for those responsible and Reed himself is offering £10,000 as a reward. So if you happened to be way out in the English countryside a few weeks back and happened to see something, step up already. Would be nice to see a nabbing in this case (might also help you out of this Wednesday morning slump you’re in).
