Hot In The Hive: D&G Mickey Mouse Print Mini Skirt

stylehive.com,fashlin,D&G,Mini SkirtIconic designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have made a trademark of their surnames which is known throughout the world, easily recognizable thanks to its glamour and great versatility. For their Spring 2010 collection, the established pair joined forces with another celebrated iconic duo: Mickey and Minnie Mouse! D&G€™s portrait print of the nostalgic Disney Cartoons are done in black and heather gray ink, while red ink is used for the hearts, which float around their loving embrace. It is a very romantic and playful sketch of the characters, artistically showing their adoration for one another in a very chic and contemporary way. Given the classic nature of the adorable print, it was only natural that the next logical step was to create the cream silk-georgette lampshade Mickey Mouse mini skirt, a chic homage to the cartoons that still evoke pleasant memories of childhood.

pAs we mentioned yesterday, today is World Industrial Design Day, and a href=”http://www.icsid.org/”ICSID/a (the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design ) has chosen the theme “Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world.” The topic was selected “to facilitate collaboration within the industrial design community with the goal of producing tangible solutions to world problems,” and many cities around the world are holding events to observe the day./p

pYou can find a list of the goings-on at the ICSID site page a href=” http://www.icsid.org/events/events/calendar535.htm”here/a. /p

pCore77 is asking its readers to share their favorite example of a “humane design solution,” so hit the comments and share your most inspired design./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/today_is_world_industrial_design_day_2010_16835.asp”(more…)/a

TechnoCRAFT: Hackers, Modders, Fabbers, Tweakers and Design in the Age of Individuality

pWe wanted to remind you that the opening of ema href=”http://www.ybca.org/tickets/production/view.aspx?id=11231″TechnoCRAFT: Hackers, Modders, Fabbers, Tweakers and Design in the Age of Individuality/a/em is right around the corner. Curated by Yves Behar, this new exhibition explores the disappearance of the border between the designer and the consumer. The exhibited designers span many continents and decades, including Max Lamb, Enzo Mari, 5.5 Designers, Studio Makkink and Bey, Martino Gamper, and more. /p

pThe show opens on Friday, July 9th and closes on October 3rd. Get your opening party tickets a href=”http://www.ybca.org/tickets/production/view.aspx?id=11231″here/a./p

pThe show is organized into six subthemes: Crowdsourcing, Platforms, Blueprints, Hacks, Incompletes, and Modules. /p

blockquoteCrowdsourcing mines the collective talent of the community to develop new design solutions. From product generation to the voting process, Crowdsourcing puts the decision-making power in the hands of the masses. One participant in the exhibition, Threadless, is an online apparel store that solicits consumers to design and vote for new t-shirts each week.

pPlatforms consist of designers creating open, software-based platforms, that provide the tools for individuals to create and/or customize their own unique products. From shoes to t-shirts to fantastic creatures, platforms make it easy for individuals of all skill levels to take on the role of designer. PUMA’s Mongolian Barbeque is an iconic example of this theme./p

pBlueprints act as ideas that can be given away or sold, putting the power to create in the hands of the consumer. Rather than create and sell a finished product, designers sell or give away instructions so that anyone can create/recreate the design in their own way. Autoprogettazione (or “self design”) is Enzo Mari’s collection of designs for furniture you can make yourself. Originally exhibited in 1974, Mari gave out a free catalogue with detailed instructions for making these basic, easy-to-assemble furniture pieces using off-the-shelf lumber and nails. /p

pHacks is a term that has moved far beyond the manipulation of computer software, extending into the public’s consciousness. Tables, iPhones, and bikes are revised, modified and manipulated to achieve a new look or new functionality./p

pIncompletes intentionally leave room for creativity on the part of the user. The degree to which the end user is involved varies with each design, but all depend on the role of the user to provide input for a design to properly function. With Marijn van der Poll’s Do hit chair made by Droog, through a hammer or other tool you can change the original stainless steel cube into a chair of your own design./p

pFinally, modules are individual components that come together to create customized creations. Intelligently designed modules allow for the user to develop an outcome that is driven in equal parts by ingenuity and budget. Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Clouds, made in collaboration with Kvadrat, allows the user to arrange and re-arrange a variety of tiles to create installations and new designs./blockquote/p

Benjamin Genocchio and Nicolai Hartvig Take the Lead as ArtInfo Branches Out with New Bureau in France

0629artfrance.jpg

Following their now-established online presence here in the US and the launch of ArtInfo China this past April, the Louis Blouin Media empire is growing a bit more with yesterday’s launch of ArtInfo France. Like China before it, the new site will be written entirely in the audience’s native tongue, French, given that’s who will be reading it. It will be run by a new Paris-based editorial group, along with contributors and various freelancers, all overseen by the company’s Vice President of Editorial, the newly-former NY Times critic, Benjamin Genocchio, and its new Editor in Chief, Nicolai Hartvig. Here’s a bit about the branching out from Louis Blouin herself:

“We are delighted to reveal this new extension of ARTINFO, as it embodies the company’s goal of fostering culture beyond borders,” comments Ms. Blouin. “France possesses such a significant and rich history in the arts — it is our responsibility to enhance and lend accessibility to our growing international audience by sharing our depth of knowledge through this modern platform.”
