Barnbrook’s Little Book of Shocking Global Facts

Barnbrook has compiled and designed a 192 page book which combines graphic imagery with hundreds of shocking global facts. Did you know, for example, that 2.6 billion people do not have basic sanitation, or that life expectancy in Swaziland is just 32 years, or that there are nearly 2 million inmates currently housed in US prisons?

The various facts collected in The Little Book of Shocking Global Facts (published by Fiell, £8.95) are arranged into chapters (see two images down for the contents page) and no two spreads share the same design or layout. Essentially the book aims to highlight what the authors see as the dangers of unchecked globalisation.

Here is a selection of spreads:

The Little Book of Shocking Global Facts is published by Fiell and priced at £8.95. It is also available in a German and French editions. More info at fiell.com/page/our-books/ethical/shocking-global

London’s Anti-Design Festival: Call for Submissions

pimg alt=”anti-design.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/anti-design.jpg” width=”468″ height=”106″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pThe a href=”http://www.antidesignfestival.com/”Anti-Design Festival/a is a new event that wlll run parallel with and in opposition to the London Design Festival, promoting work that “challenges contemporary stereotypes.” For Neville Brody, the organizer of the fair this means being “uncommercial, dangerous and anti-establishement,” and, apparently exhibiting alongside people like Jonathan Barnbrook, Stuart Semple and Stefan Sagmeister. Though we aren’t sure you have to be anti-commercial to be radical, we’re looking forward to seeing the results./p

pThe bulk of the details are under wraps, but the call for submissions is open:/p

blockquoteSubmissions can take any form you want, but the bulk of the work should be cheaply made and reproducible so that visitors can take it and use it however they want. You can send us actual printed pieces, but you would have to pay for shipping (email us first to confirm shipping details). Most probably, you would send us PDFs of work that are up to A3 in size (black and white or color) that we can reproduce for you, or digital files to be shown on computers. Here are some suggested formats: Objects/ephemera already produced; PDFs of graphics to be photocopied onto A4 Sheets; Posters; Images or motion graphics to be displayed out of monitors; Sound to be played into headphones./blockquote

The Coolest Bar Around

PhotobucketGet cool, get downright freezing! London is my favorite place to visit and on one of my recent trips over there I discovered the Absolut Ice Bar. Nestled in a quaint little nook off of Regent Street you€™ll find a little slice of Sweden, since everything is made from ice found in the frozen Torne River in Jukkasjärvi. This is truly an experience you cannot afford to miss. Below zero temperatures, silver parkas, SHOT GLASSES MADE OF ICE! This bar will definitely impress. The entire place is made of ice including chairs, tables, sculptures, and the bar itself! My favorite part is the phone booth sculpture. A trip to London isn’t complete unless you make a stop at this bar. Yes, the price is a little steep (about 35 dollars entrance fee, with one drink) but really, how often can you say you sipped a cocktail in the middle of summer at -5° Celsius?
