Inspiration and Isolation in the Creative Process

pInspiration’s a tricky thing; some artists pathologically avoid gazing at the work of others in order to guarantee their work’s originality, while others assiduously mine the canons of history to ensure that their art bears the proper influences. In the corporate world, however, the battle between “eureka” moments and synergistic understanding has already been decided. While fine artists, fiction authors and the occasional mad-scientist can work in isolation, those endeavoring to create functional products are rarely afforded that luxury./p

pInstead, as the history of a href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/book_reviews/book_review_inventors_and_innovations_edited_by_duncan_mccorquodale_16869.asp”invention/a illustrates, the modern creative process relies more on incremental improvements rather than transcendent “aha” moments. Perhaps it’s finally time to discard the myth of the lone-inventor. While personal experience may occasionally lead to moments of inspiration, even the story of Archimedes’s realization of displacement may be apocryphal. Even paradigm changing ideas like calculus and evolution share multiple authors. Given the number of parallel inventions throughout history, it’s reasonable to conclude that such innovation stemmed not from some quasi-mystical firing of neurons in the brain of an anointed inventor, but instead grew as the logical consequence of the progression of other threads of human knowledge, newly applied to a fresh field./p

pWhile inspiration may come from the immediate environment or occasionally from within, with billions of people on the planet sharing broadly similar experiences, the likelihood that one misunderstood genius will have a unique and paradigm changing experience independent of shared knowledge decreases with every year and every birth. Instead, most human lives are defined now as much by their interaction with products of human ingenuity as they are by interaction with the natural world. Individually, while being told that one can’t be the next Newton or Leibniz might be a touch soul crushing, our modern world (including the screen through which you read this) affords interconnectivity and even interpersonal-connectedness never dreamed of by Newton. He had to perform needle experiments with his own eyes to learn about optics, as he had no peers, but a modern youth can find inspiration in a global community rather than a local one. As observers and participants in the creation of design history, we at Core77 continually find ourselves inspired by the beauty created by strangers and friends alike. Although we can’t help but utter a few “why didn’t we think of that’s,” the thrill of seeing innovation by others only spurs us to work harder at our own projects, and smile that we aren’t going at it alone./p

Helium Jacket

An ultra-lightweight waterproof jacket protects from summertime downpours with high-tech fabric
helium-jack1.jpg

With all the rain in NYC lately, I’ve had a chance to properly test the Helium Jacket that Outdoor Research recently sent over. At only 6.8 ounces, the jacket is the ideal weight for toting around in preparation for summertime storms or tossing in a backpack while hiking.

The fully waterproof Helium jacket, with 2.5 layers of the Seattle, WA-based company’s 20D Pertex Shield DS ripstop fabric protects from downpours well. The fit is trim and suitable for warm weather layering and the finish includes heat-taped seams and hidden cinch cords keeping the lines clean. Conveniently, the entire jacket compresses in to a side pocket for simple storage.

The Helium jacket sells online for $140 in three colorways—yellow, fossil and black.

I can’t see the forest for the clones: DUS Architects’ compact urban woodland oasis

Step inside and you’re instantly transported from the center of Amsterdam to a peaceful forest, marred only by the sight of your mirrored clones./p

pSadly the installation was temporary, but here’s to hoping they get more requests. We could desperately use one of these in New York, and I’d enjoy it for that first 20 minutes before a homeless person started living in it./p

Fine Little Day’s inspiration books

Hot In The Hive: Yellow Submarine Tea Infuser

PhotobucketIf you’re a tea drinker then you know all about the benefits of loose leaf tea vs. teabags. Loose leaf just tastes better, but it involves a little more work before you can start sipping. What makes loose leaf tea taste even better is an adorable tea infuser to stash the leaves in. The Submarine Tea Infuser is seriously the cutest little thing I’ve ever laid eyes on! Doesn’t it just make your heart smile? I am a huge Beatles fan and this sub reminds me of the hippy aquatic world of Yellow Submarine, so of course I need to have one. You’ll impress your guests with this little sub and I guarantee a few €œaww€s when you bust it out. This little infuser will definitely have people jealous of your hip style and rad taste for home decor.

Obscur

Dramatic, artisanally-crafted menswear from a rising Swedish label

Obscur_1.jpg Obscur_5.jpg

Easily one of the most slept-on labels in its native Sweden, Richard Söderberg’s Obscur is arguably one of the most progressive fashion brands coming out of Europe. The label’s strength lies in its balance of color, material and cut, inspired by the misty surroundings of Söderberg’s Helsingborg home and dark Scandinavian music.

Although moodily Gothic, the idea that only wearing a piece fully expresses and conveys its inherent values drives the designer’s overt concern with refining classic silhouettes. With exacting self-standards, Söderberg applies a nitpick’s attention to detail resulting in garments that fit extremely well and require little in the way of additional styling.

Obscur_4.jpg Obscur_3.jpg

The level of artisanal handicraft and technical finishing is uncompromising. His preference for raw, heavy materials—such as traditional Scandinavian hand-altered leather—imparts an almost armor-like aesthetic, while a softer approach to the linings and elements exposed to the skin makes for sensual tactility.

Obscur_2.jpg Obscur_6.jpg

“Obscur is a language for the creator, a language intended to express a certain view of the world and a reaction. A reaction to the impureness and inconsistency that surrounds us,” concludes Söderberg.

The brand sells through a small (yet growing) number of outlets in Asia and Australia. Visceral, stark, bleak and one of the fashion industry’s true hidden treasures, we wouldn’t be surprised if Obscur came into the spotlight.

Batumi Aquarium
