Steed Taylor: daughters and sons knot

Stanley Series by Simon Donald

Stanley by Simon Donald at Variability

London Design Festival 2010: at Variability in London last week designer Simon Donald presented new additions to his Stanley collection, which includes this candle holder with sandpaper for striking matches on.

Stanley by Simon Donald at Variability

Above: Swan and Night Light. Candlesticks with a place to keep your matches and a bright yellow sandpaper detail on which to strike.

The range is made of oak combined with materials and mechanisms found in the workshop.

Stanley by Simon Donald at Variability

Above: 1,2,3 coat hooks. Three of the same but all different. These coat hooks are all identical in shape but hang in different positions to create this mixed set.

Stanley by Simon Donald at Variability

Above: Mitre Mirror. Reminiscent of a woodworker’s mitre block this free-standing mirror is adjustable to three angles for personal grooming. Below: Salt and Pepper shakers. These shakers feature a removable nylon plug. Twisting the plug sets the shaker to open or closed, or pull it out completely to refill.

Stanley by Simon Donald at Variability

The information that follows and captions are from Donald:

Straightforward geometry and material interventions are the basis of the Stanley homeware collection.

Solid oak combined with workshop materials (and mentality) such as household sandpaper have resulted in a range of work that could simply be described as ‘common sense design’.

Paola Lenti lecture with Luminaire at Outdoor Therapy

Dezeen promotion: design brand Luminaire present a lecture and reception with furniture and rug designer Paola Lenti at Outdoor Therapy in Miami on 7 October.

The evening coincides with an exhibition of Lenti’s work at Outdoor Therapy that will run 1-31 October.

Click here to RSVP for the lecture.

The information that follows is from Luminaire:

LUMINAIRE WELCOMES PAOLA LENTI TO MIAMI OCTOBER 7, 2010

Highlighting a month-long exhibition of Paola Lenti’s furniture during October at Outdoor Therapy, Luminaire is pleased to announce a special speaking engagement with the designer on Thursday, October 7th.

Founded in 1994, Paola Lenti’s eponymous company specializes in outdoor furniture and rugs with a focus on the innovative exploration of both natural and synthetic materials. Sourcing both traditionally produced fabrics of the highest quality as well as adapting contemporary, technologically- advanced textiles, her products are unlike any others on the market. The pieces comprising Lenti’s lines have become new classics that can be seamlessly integrated within the domestic landscape, bringing sophisticated elegance to exterior as well as interior environments. Extremely resist- ant to the elements and maintaining their integrity from season to season, each collection features both materials and colors developed by Lenti, and which are exclusive to her company.

Paola Lenti was born in Alessandria, Italy, where she focused on classical studies before moving to Milan. Graduating from the Politecnico di Milano, she initially worked as a graphic designer and art director for event and fashion companies. In the 1990s, Lenti decided to produce her own objects, experimenting with both pieces in Limoges and biscuit porcelain as well as Murano glass vases. Creating her first collection of rugs in 1995, Lenti turned to felt, which would become one of her signature materials and inspire her first foray into furniture design. Soon beginning her fruitful col- laboration with designer Francesco Rota, their Linea lounge chair garnered the 2003 Compasso d’Oro Award’s Mention of Honor. During the same year, after three years of research and development, Lenti launched Rope, a high-performance yarn that became the basis for her outdoor collection Aqua. Ground-breaking in the arena of outdoor furniture and com- prising both furniture and rugs, her Island series went on to receive the 2004 Compasso d’Oro Award’s Mention of Honor. In 2005, Rope earned Wallpaper* magazine’s award for best fabric and for 2006/2007, the rug Crochet was named “best flooring” by Elle Decor. Recent material investigations include Aquatech, a durable, synthetic yarn similar in appearance to straw and the innovative Cabanne, a modular structure comprised of wood, steel and Lenti’s textiles that can be configured in a number of ways to define exterior space.

Core77 Gallery: London Design Festival 2010

pThe London Design Festival went out with a bang at the VA Museums’s Two’s A Pair Event earlier this week, closing down a massive program of hundreds of events, from the mainstream to totally fringe. Core77 Correspondent Shai Akram blitzed the shows for us, capturing the best in her just-posted photo gallery. There are so many highlights, but a few of our favorites: Hel Yes!, a temporary restaurant celebrating Finnish Design, The Visitor, a show put together by Okay Studio and Friends, Yuri Suziki’s sound devices, and Design Against the Clock, Established Sons real time design studio. /p

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Round windows in black and red are plugged into the facade of this wood-clad house by Australian firm Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects that sits on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

The three-storey residence, called Ormond Esplanade, is split across four levels with a half-level rise between the second and third floor.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

The main stairwell has open risers and ascends through a void.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

The timber-clad house sits on a sloping site with a low-level garden to the rear, which can be accessed via an external stair.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Here’s some more from the architects

Ormond Esplanade

No, they (the client) said. Make it Saint Kilda.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

And, make it light. Make it bright. Make it tight. Add all of the green stuff too, please. And, we want it beachy. Maybe like a boat? And it better be fun. Serious fun.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Hmn. How about spotted gum? Or even better, spotty gum.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Skin

A tight wrapped skin creates a shell for this vertical house. Like real skin, it’s blemished and rough. Something to protect the delicate inside, at once tough and resilient, but still stretchy, smooth, supple and tactile.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Baroque

Though seemingly abstract, this house is multilayered, replete with veiled secrets, like a dreaming or wandering left for the occupant to decode – a chain of intimate revelations.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Vertical Living

A tight block turns the circulation on its head. A three level stair rises behind the circular windows providing a connection between the four distinct zones.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

The screen-printed hoop pine balustrade links the levels through a carefully constructed narrative of image and colour.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Zones for Living

A garden room lands the ground floor. A grand stair is mirrored inside and out and connects the lofty living to both the beach and the backyard.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

The kid’s bedrooms are fun, exciting and colourful and the parent’s garret is necessarily moody, sexy and private.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Lean and Green

The void also provides passive stack ventilation, grounded in a masonry level and a permeable lid. Glazing is optimised and daylight carefully controlled.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

A 2.0kw solar system provides energy. Rainwater flushes and washes while grey water keeps the grass green.

This is sensory architecture that cannot be engaged in a single eyeful.

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

Ormond Esplanade by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects

A home of full of wonder and anticipation for a young family.
