Here’s a concrete espresso machine by Shenkar College of Engineering and Design student Shmuel Linski.

Called Espresso Solo, the conceptual product features metal working parts and a concrete case.

Here’s some more information from Linski, who is due to graduate next year:

ESPRESSO SOLO : concrete espresso machine for lavazza, designed by Shmuel Linski, Israel.

The espresso machine makes only espresso: short and long.

The design process begun in choosing the material: I chose concrete. I had a vision: concrete in the kitchen, not only as a wall or decorative part, I wanted it to be a desirable consumer product.

The contrast between the roughness, massiveness and hardness of the concrete and the fine metal parts, which are dealing with the coffee preparation process, was very challenging and interesting for me.

The machine works with coffee beans: they are poured from the top part. The water is poured into “water drawer” in the back.

Unitasker Wednesday: Potato Chip Finger

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

There are folks out there who don’t like picking up potato chips with their hands. Chips are greasy! Your hands could be dirty! And if you have a cut, the salt can sting! Avoid the pain of eating potato chips with the Potato Chip Finger!

It’s also fully automatic, and so realistic looking that your mouth won’t know you didn’t use your real fingers! And, if I’m to believe the man in the commercial, after using it you want to give everyone a big thumbs up! (You should know it works well, too, because I keep using exclamation points!!!)

I was having difficulty imagining how people who don’t like using the hands attached to their bodies might possibly eat potato chips without the Potato Chip Finger, but thankfully the commercial also showed me a multi-tasking alternative:

The Royal Institute of British Architects Elects Its First Irish President

0723stirprize.jpg

Still basking in the attention of last week’s release of its shortlist for the Stirling Prize, the Royal Institute of British Architects has made some more news for itself with their announcement that they’ve selected a new president. While they elect a new one every two years and have had 73 since their founding, what makes this unique is that Angela Brady, who will take over in September of next year, is Irish. It’s the first time the RIBA has elected their top official from Ireland, and only the second woman to have held the position (the other, Ruth Reed, is the current president). Brady is a founding partner at the firm Brady Mallalieu Architects, spent time working with universities, various workshops, and architecture-based aid groups, as well as having appeared a number of times hosting British and Irish television specials about her industry. Here’s a bit from her statement about what she has planned for the RIBA during her tenure:

“As RIBA President, my priorities will be to ensure the RIBA remains as relevant to its members as possible and to encourage all members to act as advocates for the benefits good design can bring to buildings, communities and the environment. There is a real challenge for us to position architecture and architects as offering real value for money to society — well designed buildings improve peoples’ health, wealth and happiness and that is the message I will be championing during my term in office. I will continue to stress the importance of sustainability in design as well as press for more diversity in the profession. I also aim to increase national and international links within the construction industry, so that we can work collectively to combat some of the environmental and economic problems we all face.

Beautiful new design work at Indira Gandhi International Airport

pimg alt=”0incubisdes.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0incubisdes.jpg” width=”468″ height=”312″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pOnce you land in JFK, you know you’re in New York. Sadly this is not because the terminal is filled with expressive designs celebrating Gotham; rather, you know because it’s filthy, illegal cabdrivers are beckoning to you from across the street, and the legal hacks are occasionally getting out of the stopped cars to scream at each other face to face./p

pIndian design firm A HREF=”http://www.incubis.net/html/aboutus/aboutushtml.htm” Incubis Consultants/A, tasked with designing the interior of Indira Gandhi International Airport, came up with a much more pleasant installation that would remind you where you were. Called “Expressive India,” the design is comprised of enormous cast-resin hands performing Imudras/I, the hand gestures from classical Indian dance forms./p

pAs Amit Gulati, head of Incubis, A HREF=”http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2010/07/28/qa-delhi-airports-hands-sculpture/” told the IWall Street Journal/I:/A/p

blockquoteAll airports have very similar design vocabulary. They are actually machines. They tend to evolve in a similar glass and metallic fashion. Very early on they were keen to give the terminal an Indian context and infuse it with Indian values. The basic positioning we created for the terminal was “Expressive India.” All classical Indian dance forms use mudras [hand gestures]. It’s a common vocabulary./blockquote

Bag Of The Week: Grand Street Disco City Bag

imageReally, no outfit is complete without the perfect bag. Foley + Corinna has created a bag that is both lust-worthy and practical. This Grand Street Disco City Bag is super sleek! It’s perfect for a city gal who doesn’t have time to mess around! I love the criss-crossed straps down the front of the bag; it’s tastefully done so as to avoid looking tacky and overwhelming. I personally really love the gray leather because it’s such a great color for the summer months, but it also comes in a basic black. I love a bag with versatility and if you’re not in the mood to sling this baby over your shoulder you can unclip the strap and rock just the handles. No need to worry about losing all your valuables because there’s even a magnet on the inside to keep everything right where it belongs. When I look for a bag, I want to invest in something I’ll be able to wear for years to come, this Foley + Corinna comes out on top!

Beer + taxidermy = packaging innovation

Scottish independent beermaker BrewDog has taken unconventional packaging to a whole new level for its 55% proof The End of History. As well as claiming it to be the most alcoholic beer in the world, BrewDog co-founder James Watt also believes it to be the most expensive. A nattily-attired bottle of the Belgian blond ale will set you back a princely £500.

Suggested serving is in a whisky tumbler, as opposed to necking straight from the furry bottle

12 bespoke bottles have been produced. According to your preference you could opt for one of seven dead stoats, four grey squirrels or, for those wanting something a little less common, there’s the single hare.

Watt suggests the beer is, “An audacious blend of eccentricity, artistry and rebellion.”

For ale connoisseurs and the flush of cash, purchases can be made from the BrewDog website.

Label Love: Sex-Kitten Stilettos From Pour La Victoire

imageI’m not exactly sure who this ‘La Victoire’ is, but she is one lucky girl. French shoe label, Pour La Victoire, by shoe designer David Giordano, features a selection of pumps, wedges, boots and other stiletto-ed beauties (and a few flats) that can only be described as burlesque beauty meets daring diva. There new F/W 2010 Collection consists of the sexiest over-the-knee (OTK) and ankle boots, as well spiky stiletto pumps and other amazingly sexy and gorgeous cooler-weather footwear. High quality leathers are used and embellished with seductive fold overs, Victorian-inspired buttons and lace and corset-like lacing and straps and given a contemporary touch with studs and metallic details. Also definitely worth checking out is their bridal collection which is a lot more than your usual white satin pumps affair and less traditional and “here comes the bride”, unless of course the bride is Carrie Bradshaw or Dita Von Teese. Smooth satins in beautifully saturated hues, as well as traditional creams and silvers, are made spectacular and one-of-a-kind with cascading ruffles, glittering crystals, and sweet pearls and lace. The overall aesthetic is much more of a sensual boudoir coquette than blushing bride, making the Pour La Victoire Bridal Collection appropriate for any time you wanna really strut your stuff in something beautifully come-hither and unique. So whether you’re looking for some luxurious winter footwear, or to add a killer pair of heels to your collection, just click on the slideshow to see some of my favorites, whether you’re this mysterious “La Victoire” or not!

Ace Jig

A back-to-basics debut of ethically-made tanks, Bajas and dresses
AceandJig_1.jpg

From the founders of LaRok clothing, Brooklyn-based label Ace & Jig refine casual basics in medium-weight fabrics for every season—Baja hoodies, tanks, raglan blouses and smock dresses—in understated neutrals. Slouchy cuffed sleeves and keyhole details keep the recently-aunched look sweetly feminine, while stripes of shades like sky blue, lemon yellow and orange add a vibrant touch.

AceandJig_2.jpg

Stripes, Ace & Jig’s signature, “have the long-lasting qualities of a classic and iconic medium”—a design approach that goes hand in hand with their ethos of tradition and responsibility. Working directly with fair practice weavers in India, designers Cary Vaughan and Jenna Wilson based their entire debut collection on yarn-dyed wovens fabricated on ancient looms.

AceandJig_3.jpg AceandJig_4.jpg

The material-focused debut speaks to their shared passion for antique fabrics, which Vaughan and Wilson collect avidly. Friends for nearly a decade, the two spent three years together on LaRok, reuniting after a break to raise their own families.

CR August issue: Dress Up Designer

We just had a play with our very own Dress Up Designer set, included with CR’s current Summer Bumper Book O’ Fun issue. Created by Peepshow’s Elliot Thoburn there’s a whole host of achingly hip looks to give your creative duo…

So, to start off, here are our two budding creatives on the page, in their smalls (the firm grip the chap is sporting is for his cut-out iPhone of course). You can also download the templates for him and her from the website address included within the issue, should you not want to deface your new CR.

A good few weeks’ growth on the ‘creative beard’ and our chap also gains some nice skinny jeans:

Hello! That’s a handsome shirt sir! Not to mention a tasty timepiece. Meanwhile, our creative lady has found a pretty cool T-shirt (Ocean Pacific no less) and is now rocking a nice pair of shorts too. Must be summer.

Now he gets shoes, while she receives a belt, a pendant, a hoodie and – very important this – a nice bag to carry ones knitting in:

All the clothes come with folding tabs so you can alter the look of your creatives as you wish (see top image for the full free-standing look complete with shades, bangle and bags).

The more adventurous among you many even have added your own additions to the wardrobe and, if so, we’d love to see them.

Thanks to Jasmin for her sterling efforts with the scalpel in the CR office! Dress Up Designer appears in our current August issue, out now.
