Girl quits her job on dry erase board, emails entire office

Yesterday morning, Jenny quit her job with a bang by emailing these photos to her entire office, about 20 employees we’re told. Awesome doesn’t begin to describe this event

Glen Howard Smalls Instructions for Architects on Dressing the Part

0810dressarch.jpg

While wearing a suit right now seems like a death warrant, given how hot and humid its been here in Chicago this summer, here’s a fun read from the architect, urban planner, and subject of the terrific documentary, My Father, the Genius, Glen Howard Small, on the importance of dressing up for work when you’re an architect. We didn’t realize Small had a blog, and although all the posts are written in all caps, we’re now hooked. In this post, he talks about his own experiences wearing the wrong things and learning that a suit could open doors for him, as well as dishing out some advice for how to clean up and look spiffy, even if you don’t have the means to spend a fortune. Here’s one fun anecdote:

In 1976 during a lecture tour that took me east, I stopped by Chicago and went to see the Graham Foundation. I do not remember the name, but the architect in charge of the foundation had a meeting with me. It was my full length afghan coat era. Pony tail and all the colorful clothing. It was winter, I looked like big bird. He was candid and said, “The foundation gives money to people like you, but I do not like you.” His office and he were all white and black slick. I have never received a Graham Grant.

Shoe Of The Week: Elizabeth and James Maryl Heel

imageNothing should come between a girl and her shoes. There’s always room for a new pair and what’s better than a pair of shoes that will get you through the remainder of summer with a bit of class? I love intricate designs and sometimes it’s hard to come by a shoe that does it well. I admit it, I can be picky with what goes on my feet, but there’s nothing not to love about this shoe! My latest obsession comes in the form of these Elizabeth and James Maryl heels. Not only is the platform on this shoe killer, but the cutout design is eye-catching and sexy! It’s nice to take a break from all the peep toe shoes out there, and this pair does close-toe’d in a way that’s still airy enough for warmer weather. Shoes are like people: each have their own unique qualities, and some just shine brighter than others… blindingly bright.

Time Out Picks the MoMA as One of the Best Places to Work in NY

0810timepick.jpg

Time Out has released their “Best Jobs in New York” issue and strangely “part-time design blogger in Chicago” didn’t make the cut again this year. But that’s this writer’s pain to deal with. The important thing is that, ranked among Tumblr and Gawker as quality places to spend your 9-5, the Museum of Modern Art was included at the top of the list. The magazine looks at what’s so great about working there, from meeting famous artists to travel to finding and learning new things. The fun part is their 17-photo slideshow that allows you to peek into their offices. Sure, a lot of it is just cubicles and filing cabinets, but somehow cubicles and filing cabinets seem cooler when they’re a part of the MoMA. Here’s some of the job perks:

And while employment at MoMA doesn’t guarantee face time with celebrities or trips to Portugal, all staffers do benefit from free tickets to the museum’s film screenings, gratis access to other art institutions around New York City and exclusive curator-led walk-throughs of exhibitions after they open to the public. Generous vacation time (more than the standard two weeks, even for entry-level employees) and benefits packages seal the already-sweet deal.

Innovative cycle designs from Peter Varga

pYou could say Peter Varga’s brain works in cycles, as the Slovakia-based designer has been rethinking pedal-powered vehicles since his design-school days. /p

pHis Citycle concept is a hubless update to the Icyclo/I, the trike format widely used in Vietnam, and it garnered Varga 8th place in 2006’s International Bicycle Design Competition;/p

pVarga’s Masters Degree project from 2007 folds up in about two seconds and won him a Slovak National Prize for Design;/p

pHis most recent project, the Oneybike, resembles a velocipede when folded up, then unfurls in seconds to form a recumbent fixie. It won a Merit Prize in the 2009 International Bicycle Design Competition./p

Now that’s what we call built-in storage: Atelier Tekuto’s amazing Cell Brick house

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/08/0ateliertekuto001.jpg” width=”468″ height=”317″ alt=”0ateliertekuto001.jpg”//div

pYesterday we’d have said it’d be tough to top the A HREF=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/jpdas_east_village_studio_making_small_space_livable_and_beautiful_17113.asp” JPDA East Village Studio/A for creative small-space living, but today we came across Atelier Tekuto’s A HREF=”http://tekuto2.squarespace.com/04_03_cellbrick/” Cell Brick house/A in Tokyo. /p

pThe chief innovation here by Atelier Tekuto (a/k/a Yasuhiro Yamashita Architecture Studio) was to build the entire two-storey house out of steel boxes that are stagger-stacked, and each blank space between boxes is occupied by a window. Because the boxes are open-ended–think of the milk-crate dorm partitions you built in college–the interior of each exterior wall becomes a series of cubby-holes, providing a massive amount of storage and obviating the need for cabinets, closets and certain types of furniture. /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/08/0ateliertekuto002.jpg” width=”468″ height=”324″ alt=”0ateliertekuto002.jpg”//div

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/08/0ateliertekuto003.jpg” width=”468″ height=”308″ alt=”0ateliertekuto003.jpg”//div

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/08/0ateliertekuto004.jpg” width=”468″ height=”313″ alt=”0ateliertekuto004.jpg”//div

pInterestingly enough, while it sounds like a construction technique like this could be simply erected on-site Lego-style, Yamashita decided (for the sake of precision) to make them off-site in pre-fab, truck-sized units and then haul them to the site:/p

blockquoteIn order to pile up the boxes, detailed planning took place over the design, structure, and construction. At the same time, from the very beginning, cost and precision of building frame were crucial topics in the process. At first, we planned to assemble each boxes on site but the precision of construction, cost and time became problematic. And eventually, we decided to unitize boxes and fuse them with high-tension bolts previously at factory. The size of unit is decided to respond to the size of truck./blockquote

pWhile this is the first we’d heard of the Cell Brick house, it was actually erected in 2004. You can read more about it A HREF=”http://tekuto2.squarespace.com/04_03_cellbrick/” here/A./p
